8 Monday, August 28, 2000 CABINET From Page 3 and N.C. State University are planning to compete against each other to see which university can register more stu dents to vote, McClure said. Oct 13 is the last day for voter regis tration, and on the following day, the two universities will reveal the results of the competition at UNC-CH’s home football game against N.C. State. In addition to touching on the pro posed competition between universities, Matthews also discussed “one-stop vot ing." External Relations Committee Chairwoman Jessica Triche organized the voting plan, which will allow regis tered voters to cast a ballot three weeks prior to Election Day at the Morehead BCC From Page 3 students to help them leam more about the BCC,” Clark said. She said she hopes the week’s activi ties will aid this effort. After the movie screening, attendees can attend a “meet and greet" with BCC members and staff. Other functions of the week include an interest meeting regarding Hurricane Floyd victim assistance and a meeting with Chancellor James Moeser. This year, students can collect BCC Bucks for attending the sessions. The coupons can be redeemed for prizes at local businesses, Clark said. She said this year’s BCC Awareness Week bears special importance because of Moeser’s involvement. “We are excited about the chancellor coming,” she said. It gives students who might not have had an opportunity to meet him a chance to do just that, she said. Clark added this week’s functions are open to students of all backgrounds. “We encourage all students to get involved with (the BCC)." The University Editor can be reached at udesk@unc.edu. Statesville Mayor John Marshall, co chairman of the commission’s regional partnership group, said the state should contract an organization to plan North Carolina’s developments and prevent them from infringing on nearby areas. Lucy Allen, co-chairwoman of the community development and down town vitality group, said a major goal of the group is to tailor building codes and development regulations to encourage improving existing facilities rather than constructing new ones. “The state gov ernment should promote the use of Smart Growth management tools that encourage things like the reuse of older schools and other properties significant to community character,” Allen said. She also discussed changing building codes for schools that don’t allow for building higher than two stories. Allen said the state should make more tax revenue available to local gov ernments to improve their communities and downtown areas. “Our state tax policies should be modified to encour age more investment in downtown areas and other older properties within the community,” she said. Some members of the commission expressed concern that too much focus on downtown improvement will take away from rural development Sen. Joe Hackney, D-Orange, co chairman of the commission, said the commission could face opposition to the recommendations before deciding on a final plan. “Everything we’re talking about is very controversial because these are going to be major changes.” The State & National Editor can be reached at stntdesk@unc.edu. tal 10 "Blue Shoes" 11 Globe 12 White lie 13 Dunderhead 21 Barbie's beau 22 Artifact 25 City west of Venice 26 Gray and Moran 27 Ranch name in "Giant" 29 inventor Whitney 30 Took the top prize 31 Dennis of "Parenthood" 33 Misbehave 34 Sandbank 35 cotta 36 10 of calendars 39 Negative prefix 41 Artist Haring 42 Actress MacGraw 43 TV network 49 Say again and again 50 Pale purple shade 1 2 3 6 7 8 9 10 111 112 13 ~ |Hr mm _ BBt HR 20 22 ■■■■■■■■ 23 |25 26 27 ■■2B|29 30 Wi 33 35 3619*37 |9B|9pi~ 39 40 1 44 ~T988845 ■■■46 47 ■■4 B" 49 s^| 52 53 |9|99i9954 55 56 57 60 61 6^ 66 ■■■TT 69 7? <Thr Satly (Tar HMj SEARCH From Page 3 maybe I’ll give (Hayes) some money because I think she wants a pair of pants more than I do.” Although Uniquities caters mosdy to young college-age women, male contes tants also were welcome at the model, search.
