UNC Set to Defend ACC Crown
North Carolina's volleyball
team will kick off its season
in the Carolina Fall Preview
at Carmichael Auditorium.
By Adam D. Hill
Staff Writer
Rarely does a team defending an
ACC championship welcome change.
The 2000 North Carolina volleyball
squad is an exception.
Despite losing two of the ACC’s best
hitters in Tori Seibert and Shannon Smith,
UNC expects to match last year’s records
28-6 overall and 14-2 in the ACC.
jr It might even better them.
“We have a brand new team,” senior
Liz Feldman said. “We have new
strengths and new weaknesses, but I feel
like our new strengths are greater.
Without a doubt, we have the potential
to be stronger than last year.”

its returners, but in part by the fresh
men, who Sagula considers to be one of
the most talented groups ever to enroll
at North Carolina.
The freshman class is composed of
Aletha Green, Nicole Reis and Jen
Schimer.
“All of the young players are doing
well,” Sagula said. “They have made
great improvements.
“Nicole Reis has played outstanding,
as have the rest of the freshmen. They
are all very capable.”
The lack of depth on the team
promises more action for the youngsters
than in years past, but that certainly
does not spell trouble for the Tar Heels.
UNC is not a team stocked with
overwhelming skill, but they have the
requisite talent needed to win the ACC
- provided they don’t lose focus.
A trio of Tar Heels will be in charge
of making sure that doesn’t happen.
UNC returns three all-ACC performers
from last season, including first-team
selection Feldman, second-team mem
ber Casey Simpson and Freshman All-
ACC Eve Rackham.
Sagula feels the combination of
Feldman and fellow defensive specialist
Lisa Fryer makes the Tar Heels a defen
sive-minded unit. The seniors will be
looked upon to set the tone for the
squad.
“The backbone of our team is our
defense,” Sagula said. “Feldman and
Fryer are great on ‘D,’ making digs and
challenging people."
While the defense may be the most
important aspect of the team, the
offense is a unit that isn’t afraid to spice
things up.
“We’ll be swing hitting a lot this
year,” Simpson said.
“With everyone hitting, we will
develop into a versatile offensive team.
We don’t have as much power this year,
but we are quicker."
Simpson, an outside hitter who tal
lied 485 kills last season, along with
Rackham, a setter, are the mainstays on
offense.
UNC’s defensive prowess and new,
wide-open offense make for a potential
ly explosive team.
“We all have a positive outlook,”
Simpson said. “The confidence is here,
and once we go into Carmichael and
start playing we’ll realize that, ‘Hey,
we’re really good.’”
The Sports Editor can be reached at
sports@unc.edu.

Casey Simpson

Gamble's Path to Sydney
Remains Clear After Meel
By T. Nolan Hayes
Sports Editor
The bad news for Nicole Gamble is
that she didn’t jump as far as she want
ed to jump Wednesday night.
The good news for her is that no one
else did, either.
Gamble is still slated to represent the
United States in next month’s Olympics
in Sydney, Australia, because no com
petitors surpassed the Olympic ‘A’ stan
dard in the “Jump for Sydney” at Belk
Track.
Gamble came the closest to gaining
the automatic qualifier, winning the com
petition with a leap of 45 feet, 6 inches on
her second attempt. The competitors had
the odds stacked against them because of
rain that soaked the runway.
“The weather wasn’t really on our
side today, especially during warmups,
but it turned out to be a pretty good
meet,” said Gamble, who serves as an
assistant coach on the North Carolina
track and field team. “We didn’t achieve
exaedy what we wanted to achieve, but
we got a good workout in.”
Joining Gamble in the competition
were Natasha Alleyne-Gibson, Tiombe
Hurd and former UNC All-American
Penny Blackwell.
Blackwell, a model who lives in Los
Angeles, made a special trip to the East
Coast just for the meet.
“At least I don’t have to run the quar
ter (mile),” joked Blackwell, remember
ing how she had to compete in multiple
events during her UNC career. “It was
actually really good. I’m blessed to be
able to revisit this place and continue to
pursue my dream.”
Blackwell and her fellow competitors
are running out of time in their pursuit.
Athletes have until Sept. 11 to reach the
‘A’ standard of 46-5 1/4 in the triple
jump, but their last real shot at it will
probably come in a meet at George
Mason this weekend.
No other meets are on the schedule
at this time, UNC coach Dennis
Craddock said.
Gamble was not originally planning
to compete at George Mason because
this weekend is her last chance to see her
family before she leaves for the Games.
She said after the competition, however,

than 6 inches short of the Olympic 'A' standard in the triple jump.
that she might change her mind.
Gamble will go to the Olympics
unless two U.S. women surpass the ‘A’
standard and she fails to do so. Only
one U.S. woman has ever jumped far
ther than 46-5 1/4, so Gamble’s chances
at this point are good.
“I think every coach and every ath

that standard because there’s still that lit

you, ‘Hey, I could still get knocked out
all the way up until I get ready to

Gamble’s winning jump was the best
of her career at Belk Track. That’s a nice
consolation prize for coming up short of
the ‘A’ standard, but Gamble wasn’t
totally pleased. She still believes she can
hit the mark.
“I know I have a 46 (feet) in me, and
that’s not me being cocky,” Gamble
said. “I know it doesn’t count, but I’ve
fouled over 46-5 plenty of times. I know
it’s in me. It’s just not time for it to come
out right now.”
