(El)? Saily Qlar MM Tar Heels Look to Blow Away Hurricane Game and time: Tulsa at North Carolina. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. Site: Kenan Stadium. TV/radio: The Tar Heel Sports Network will provide live radio cover age; its flagship station is WCHL 1360-AM. Records: Tulsa was 2-9, 1-6 in the WAC in 1999. North Carolina was 3-8, 2-6 in the ACC. Series: The teams have never met. Personnel update: Tulsa - No injuries reported. UNC - OG Don The Lowdown on Saturday’s Game Tulsa Golden Hurricane JsKrw at North Carolina Tar Heels UQL 2-9,1 -6 in WAC in 1999 Kenan Stadium, 6 p.m. 3-8,2-6 in ACC in 1999 Tulsa ranked 90th nationally running the ball last year and lost its top back to graduation. Ken Bohanon (235 pounds) is big for a tailback but lacks big-play potential. Edge: UNC. QB Josh Blankenship was WAC Rookie of the Year in '99. But he hasn't faced comers as good as Errol Hood and Michael Waddell, who will allow UNC to blitz without worry. Edge: UNC. The UNC offensive line is unproven, but this game will be telling. Tulsa's defensive line and linebackers are way undersized, so UNC should be able to push them around. Edge: UNC. Tulsa will likely have to bring eight men to the line to stop the run. That should open things up for the tight ends and let the wide receivers, especially Bosley Allen, get deep. Edge: UNC Not an easy call because the Tar Heels have a new kicker and punter. Tulsa has both of its hooters back, but neither was great in 1999. Experience wins here barely. Edge: Tulsa. Tulsa's Rush vs. UNC's Front Seven: Tulsa's Pass vs. UNC's Secondary UNC's Rush vs. Tulsa's Front Seven: UNC's Pass vs. Tulsa's Secondary Special Teams . The key matchup: The Tar Heels need to come out and establish their new offense, especially the running game. That’s six pounds fewer than UNC’s starting fullback, Anthony Saunders. The Tar Heel offensive line averages an even 300 pounds per man. Needless to say, Tulsa should not be able to line up, play it straight and hold its ground. The Tar Heels know it, and they expect some trickery. “You’ve just got to be ready for them to move,” UNC left tackle Louis Marchetti said. “You've got to take some shorter steps and be looking for them to slant and the linebackers coming a whole lot.” With the mismatch as big as it is in favor of the Tar Heels, there is no won der tailback Willie Parker started feeling better this week. Parker, who strained his back last Thursday, missed practice Monday and Tuesday. But Parker was full speed Thursday and should make the first start of his career Saturday. A 100-yard game might be awaiting him if true freshman Brandon Russell doesn’t steal too many of his carries. 4S fit fit fit GET VALUABLE SKILL TRAINING AND AN SB,OOO BONUS. Call Don Hicks 967-1328 Sports Final analysis/prediction: The Tar Heels must overcome a troubling trend if they hope to rebound from last year’s 3-8 debacle. UNC has lost each of its last two open ers at home on late field goals. Both years the Tar Heels were unable to recover, starting 0-3 in 1998 and 1-4 in 1999. “You can come back and win the rest of the 10 or 11 or whatever, but losing the season opener is a blow to the team,” UNC senior linebacker Brandon Spoon said. “It’s kind of like having to start over in some sense and regroup. After three or four weeks of camp and practicing, it’s not a lot of fun to have to regroup.” The Tar Heels should have no such problems in 2000. They don’t know exactly what to expect from Tulsa because it has anew coaching staff, but that shouldn’t matter. UNC will have an optimistic home crowd on its side and- more impor tantly -a lot more talent on its sideline than Tulsa. Even if the North Carolina offense falters in its first real game action, the defense will be there to bail it out. Tulsa quarterback Josh Blankenship, a sopho more, has started only five games in his career. The rest of the Golden Hurricane’s skill players are even more unproven than that. There is no reason for this game to be anything other than a rout. UNC 38, Tulsa 10 Compiled by T. Nolan Hayes •* "' M Redshirt freshman tailback Willie Parker could have a big debut against Tulsa's small defenders. Classified Advertising | For Rent | COUNTRY LIVING. Coach Carl Torb u s h UNC ROUNDUP announced the decision late Wednesday night in a released statement. The statement said Borders will remain suspended until after the legal issues are setded. A decision regarding his participation will be made at that time. His anticipated court date is Sept. 18. Borders caught four passes for 37 yards in 1999 and started one game, against Georgia Tech.
