Nolan Hayes Sports Editor If Carl Torbush had his way, Florida State would be flying high and looking past its matchup with North Carolina this weekend. But that’s not the case. The Seminoles are undefeated at 2-0, but they’re unhap py because they were pushed to the limit by Georgia Tech in their 26-21 win Saturday. The Seminoles will no doubt be ready to rev it back up for the SPORTS NOTEBOOK mtmtmtmrt & Tar Heels when they get to town. “Those close games help you,” Florida State coach Bobby Bowden said. “It gets your attention.” Outzen Out After Key INT The Tar Heels have plenty to worry about in preparing for the Seminoles, but their list got a little shorter this week. FSU backup quarterback Marcus Outzen, who occasionally relieves starter Chris Weinke, won’t play if the game is close and Weinke is healthy. Outzen subbed in for Weinke against Georgia Tech and threw an interception that was returned 50 yards for a touch down. “I think it is normal to second guess ! $5 OFF I Good on any tanning package of 10 I or more visits with this coupon. He ran some option in high school and is much more mobile than Weinke, who is a pure pocket passer. Bosley Who? Bosley Allen is starring at wide receiver for the Tar Heels, but Bowden isn’t losing any sleep over it. Allen came out of Southeast High School in Bradenton, Fla., as one of the nation’s best athletes. He was first-team all-state in football and one of the coun try’s best long jumpers in track and field. But Bowden can’t even remember if the Seminoles tried to recruit him. “Who?" Bowden responded when asked about Allen. “I’m not sure. He could have been. We look at so many kids that I’m just not sure.” Allen, Peppers Pick Up ACC Honors Allen and Julius Peppers earned ACC player-of-the-week honors at their respective positions. Allen was named the league’s top spe cialist after returning seven punts for 153 yards, including a 78-yard score. Peppers recorded two sacks and returned a fum ble 12 yards for a touchdown. By Rachel Carter Assistant Sports Editor The North Carolina offense had to give itself a pep talk during halftime Saturday. Going back on the field against Wake Forest, UNC committed itself to improving the running game. The results were mixed. UNC did improve on its lackluster first-half performance, but not by much. The Tar Heels rushed for 34 yards in 24 carries in the first half and increased the output to 95 yards on 25 runs in the second half. UNC rushed nine of 13 plays in its first two drives of the second half. “I don’t think we just changed our game plan just because they stopped the run,” quarterback Ronald Curry said. “We’re going to have to establish a run ning game.” Forty of those second-half yards belonged to freshman running back shot put Godina had already earned a place on the team in the discus. Godina joked that doing both events “keeps me from running out of things to do.” Hunter, who didn’t immediately real ize how serious his injury was, had recently been listed as day to day. He had said he hoped his knee would heal before the Sept 22 competition. But after consulting with Dr. Tim Taft, a UNC professor of orthopaedics, he decided to pull out “Marion and I looked forward to competing together in Sydney, but I am a professional athlete and unfortunately, injuries are part of the game,” Hunter, 31, said in a statement released by USA Track & Field. Hunter, a former assistant coach at North Carolina who lives in Apex, still planned to go to Australia to support his wife and other U.S. teammates. Jones is trying to win five gold medals Q| Fa Andre Williams, who entered the game late in the fourth quarter after the contest’s outcome had been decided. Williams aver aged 8.0 yards per carry and led the team in rushing. “I thought going into the ballgame that we’d move the ball well, and we didn’t,” UNC UNC tailback Willie Parker rushed for 24 yards on nine caries during Saturday's win against Wake. coach Carl Torbush said. “You’ve got to give Wake Forest a great deal of credit. They played outstanding defense and put us in some bad plays.” Those plays included shutting down the young Tar Heel tailbacks. UNC’s Willie Parker netted 24 yards on nine rushes in the game. Parker’s longest carry went for 12 yards. Brandon Russell, who got his second career start, didn’t fare any better. Russell gained 22 yards in 11 carries. “They’re obviously young,” Wake defensive tackle Nathan Bolling said. “They have some quick feet but nothing at this year’s games - in the 100 and 200 meters, the 400- and 1,600-meter relays, and the long jump. No track and field athlete has ever won five gold medals in one Olympics.. The 330-pound Hunter initially con tinued to compete and train after his injury, thinking he had a recurrence of tendinitis in the knee. During the Grand Prix meet in Berlin on Aug. 25, his pain was so severe he passed on his final two attempt* after fouling on three of his previous four tries. He was sacked five times for a loss of 51 yards. Curry finished the game with minus-6 rushing yards. He rushed twice for 18 yards in UNC’s opening drive, but he was also sacked for a loss of 19 yards. “I’ve got a bad habit of trying to make too much out of nothing,* Curry said. “I think sometimes I had to throw the ball away. I cost us some- losing 10, 15 yards on sacks.’ Curry said the offense needed some work but added that he was not talking about the running game specifically. “Pm talking about the offense in gen eral,” Curry said. “We made a lot of mis reads on some of the passing stuff. I felt that the running backs ran the ball hard” While the running game struggled, UNC found some relief in its passing offense. Its quarterbacks completed 4-of -6 passes for 105 yards in the first half. UNC finished the game 7-for-13 with 194 passing yards, including Curry’s 60- yard touchdown pass to wideout Bosley Allen with 6:31 left in the game. The Sports Editor can be reached at sports@unc.edu. also was the bronze medalist at the 1997 World Championships. He is a three time U.S. champion and the 1995 world indoor silver medalist. Hunter starred as a collegiate athlete at Penn State, earning All-America hon ors from 1988-90. He is now coached by Brian Blutreich, an assistant at North Carolina. Hunter finished seventh at the 1996 Olympics while Godina became the first American to compete in both the shot put and discus teams since 1924. Godina won both events at the USA Championships in 1998, the first time that feat had been accomplished since Parry O’Brien did it in 1955. 9
