At the end of the show, Aretha Franklin sauntered on stage, out-singing and out performing the other divas-in- training. “Divas Live” might have been an ensemble concert, but it was ultimately Aretha’s show. University of Virginia’s Hullaballoos pro vided excellent opening acts, but it was still the ladies’ evening. The quality of the “Glam Jam” ultimately rested solely on their fashionably black-clad shoulders, and- divas that they are - the Loreleis almost always delivered the goods. The Loreleis offer a sound distinctive from any of their peers. Yes, the group has the polished tone of an a cappella ensemble, but nearly all of their arrange ments are more percussive than melod ic - the songs focus on the beat rather than the doo-wop harmony. So it’s not surprising that their best songs showcased the group’s percussive arrangements. The ladies wisely nodded to Em Vogue (the funkiest divas of them all), covering “My Lovin’ (You’re Never Organizers will meet in the Pit from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. today to celebrate, eat and discuss the week’s events with interested students. The high point of the evening con jured the image of mystical diva Stevie Nicks. Although the opening verse to “Rhiannon” sounded- a little unbal anced, as if the group was searching for a tempo, the Loreleis shifted gears into an intense arrangement of “Dreams.” Building to a climax/chant of “Dreams unwind/Love’s a state of mind,” the group pulled out all the stops, without trying to sound exaedy like the Fleetwood Mac version. A returning favorite from concerts past, “Dreams” is quickly becoming the Loreleis’ equivalent to the Clef Hangers’ mainstay performance of “Africa." permanendy by Feb. 1. Senior Week Activities Include info Session Senior class officials will conduct a Commencement Information Session in the Pit from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today for seniors graduating in December. Officials Seek Suspect In Tear Gas Incident Chapel Hill police responded to reports of tear gas at 12:07 a.m. Sunday on Rosemary Street An unknown subject threw at least one canister over the wall of the court yard at He’s Not Here, witnesses report. Police suspect that more than one canis ter was released. The gas spread along Rosemary Street, causing traffic blocks from Columbia s{?(' Satlij Qfcf The only missteps of the evening were covers of Bonnie Raitt’s “Something to Talk About” and Hall and Oates’ “Maneater.” It was an ambi tious choice, but the group’s polished voices did not provide “Something to Talk About” with enough grit to match Raitt’s risque original. Despite quickly fixed sound system problems, “Maneater” was the only song in which the ladies’ diva image became self-paro dic (complete with a feather boa). Divas need to show a little restraint, too. But even a few spotty moments can not challenge the Loreleis’ place as the University’s eminent songstresses. Some bar patrons complained of nausea and other irritations, although none were taken to the hospital. Police have no suspects at this time. Judge Orders Mediation In Restaurant Law Suit On Friday a Wake County Superior Court judge ordered Southern Village’s developer and a restaurant owner from Durham to participate in mediation to settle a dispute over a failed fish restau rant. A trial date will be set after the mediation. Maggie Radzwiller, owner of Brightleaf 905 in Durham, and D.R. Bryan, Southern Village’s developer, agreed to build the restaurant in Chapel Hill in March. But the building process stopped when Bryan decided that he no longer wanted to go through with the restaurant. Radzwiller filed a lawsuit against Bryan to regain money she put into the company.
