A man with ties to the state of North Carolina is the top candidate for a prominent head coaching posi tion atUNC. . This coach is already in a good situ • ation at another school, so picking up • 'jus belongings and moving them to Chapel Hill is not a no-brainer. *. - He wants to check out the scene at to see what he might be getting ■into, so he makes the trip south to visit director of Athletics Dick Baddour. - They have some fun and crunch iome numbers. The coach says that 3Dhapel Hill is a pretty nice place, but Tie still isn’t sure he wants to come - the fans at his current school love him and want him to stay. So do his players. . Still, almost everyone expects him :to leave. After all, who can turn down ;the chance to work and live in the ; “southern part of heaven?” You can’t say no to the Tar Heels, can you? Roy Williams could. And, as everyone found out Monday, so could Frank Beamer. ■ Now, the question facing Baddour and UNC is where they go from here. The hunt for anew basketball coach 'became chaotic after Williams bailed but, and the search for anew football loach could be headed in that direction. * Baddour has never revealed who is J>n his list of potential replacements for ;Carl Torbush, but Beamer’s name was •obviously at the top of it. Baddour wanted Beamer so much Siat as of Monday’s announcement, he 'had not contacted two other coaches Crumpler, Peppers Named All-ACC from Staff Reports > North Carolina tight end Alge fcrumpler and defensive end Julius Peppers were named to the 2000 All-ACC first team Monday. Crumpler received 34 out of a . possible 70 first-team votes, and Peppers got 64. Crumpler, a senior, also was named one of three finalists for the inaugural John Mackey Award for the nation’s best tight end. Crumpler caught 23 pass es for 287 yards and one touchdown this season. Peppers, who led the ACC with 15 sacks, also was named a first-team All- America by CollegeFootballNews.com. Peppers had 64 tackles, including a school-record 24 tackles for loss this sea j*on. NOLAN HAYES SPORTS EDITOR who are worthy of consideration. Southern Mississippi had not gotten a call from Baddour about coach Jeff Bower. Western Michigan Athletics Director Kathy Beauregard had heard from Missouri, Oklahoma State and Rutgers about talking with coach Gary Darnell, but she had not received a call from UNC. Those two coaches aren’t necessari ly on Baddour’s list. But if they are, he had better start calling them. With Monday’s firing of Paul Hackett, Southern California has now joined UNC, Alabama and several other schools in the race for anew football coach. Because of the number of jobs avail able, a top coaching candidate will be able to weigh offers from different schools before deciding where he wants to go. That doesn’t help Baddour. Baddour also faces the pressure of having to hire someone quickly. This weekend is huge in terms of recruiting, and the Tar Heels aren’t going to be too appealing to prospective players if they don’t have a coach. So, Baddour must get them one. He Lawrence Taylor’s school-record of 16 set in 1980. Of Peppers’ 15 sacks, 13 came on the road. Volleyball Heads to Florida The North Carolina volleyball team will head to Gainesville, Fla., to face Southeast Missouri State in the first round of the NCAA Championships. Southeast Missouri State received an automatic bid. UNC, which won the ACC tournament, finished the season 26-7 and also received an automatic bid. The Tar Heels are making their third consecutive trip to the NCAA tourna ment. In both previous trips to the tour nament, UNC has made it to the second round. UNC defeated Oral Roberts 3-2 in the first round in 1998 and Northern Arizona 3-0 in the first round in 1999. Game Times Set for Soccer The North Carolina men’s soccer team will host two-time defending NCAA champion Indiana on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Fetzer Field. But Beamer’s decision probably isn’t Baddour’s fault If Baddour offered him the huge deal that is being reported and Beamer declined, then there’s not much else Baddour could do. He went alter his man hard and didn’t get him, so it’s time to pursue other options. It’s similar to what happened with Williams this summer. Williams said no, which also wasn’t Baddour’s fault, and Baddour moved on. It’s still early in the hoops season, but it’s not too early to tell that Baddour hit a home run with his deci sion to hire Matt Doherty. Now he’s got to do it again, with one small difference. Baddour had to find a men’s basket ball coach - Bill Guthridge’s retirement forced him into it. But he did not have to find anew football coach. He had a perfecdy fine coach in Torbush and decided that he wasn’t good enough. Now it’s time for Baddour to come up with a better alternative. Losing Beamer was tough for him, but all that matters in this business is that Baddour lost. Just ask Torbush, who knows all too well the position Baddour now finds himself in: fourth-and-long, from deep in his own territory. The difference for Baddour is that punting is not an option. T. The North Carolina guard lay on her stom ach long enough for her coaches, team mates and trainers to rush to see what was the matter. East Tennessee State’s Racquel Ellis had knocked Lea to the ground while fighting to steal a pass in the two teams’ Women’s Basketball E.Tennessee Sl . .63 UNC 84 Monday night meeting. Lea picked herself up, calmly went to the free throw line and missed the front end of her one-and-one. But Lea exacted her revenge soon enough. On the Tar Heels’ next posses sion, Lea took charge of the ball in front of UNC’s basket and drove hard to the Lady Bucs’, leaving her defenders in the dust to score an easy layup. The plays seemed to fit perfecdy for the game. The Tar Heels got knocked around but then dominated as they grabbed an 84-63 win. “Well, it wasn’t real pretty, but we had some spurts out there when we were doing pretty good,” UNC coach Sylvia Hatched said. “Coming off the bench, I thought (the players) really helped us out.” One of UNC’s key reserves was for ward Jennifer Thomas. Thomas made the most of her 13 minutes, contributing 15 points and five rebounds. Hatched also got production from the usual suspects. Sophomore point guard Coretta Brown continued her stedar play with 15 points and six assists. Backcourt mate Juana Brown tallied 17 points, and senior forward LaQuanda Barksdale led the team with 19 points and 16 rebounds. ETSU was simply not tad enough to handle Barksdale’s rebounding and Thomas’ inside scoring. “They were a lot shorter team,” L EASTERN l l IMM FEDERAL A L Iv THEATERS A Of"" PLAZA THEATRES \ IHi Elliott Rd. Thomas scored 15 points off the bench. Thomas said. “The coaches told us if we just ran down the middle and got good position, then we should get the ball for the guards to look inside.” Freshman center Candace Sutton enjoyed the biggest height advantage. At 6-6, she was 5 inches taller than Lady Bucs center Lauren Trantham. Sutton proved too much for Trantham and company to handle. She had a season high five blocked shots and added eight points. “Their size was definitely a factor and their athletic ability," ETSU coach Kathy Kemp said. “That kind of wears you down.” It took UNC (3-2) a while to wear down the Lady Bucs (0-4). The Tar Heels held an eight-point lead at half time after closing the half on a 9-0 run. UNC struggled in the opening min utes of the game. In her postgame com ments, Hatchell said she thought about calling a timeout two minutes into the first half because the team was “flat.” While Hatchell was frustrated by her Notice of a Citizens’ Informational Workshop for Intersection Improvement at US 15-501 and NC 751 (Erwin Road) in Chapel Hill Project 8.1502101 U-4008 Orange County The North Carolina Department of Transportation and the Town of Chapel Hill will hold a joint Citizens’ Informational Workshop on December 13, 2000, between the hours of 4 PM and 7 PM in the Town Council Meeting Room in the Chapel Hill Town Hall, 306 N.
