No-Names Mark Super Bowl Star power might be missing from Super Bowl XXXV, but it doesn't appear to bother the Giants or Ravens at all. The Associated Press TAMPA, Fla. - This is the Super Bowl without superstars. There will be no John Elway or Brett Favre playing quarterback in Sunday’s NFL championship game. Instead, there’s Baltimore’s Trent Dilfer and New York’s Kerry Collins. The Ravens have a member of the league’s all-time team, safety Rod Woodson. Yet Deion Sanders, who has n’t been anywhere near Raymond James Stadium this week, is a whole lot better known. Baltimore also has the NFL defensive player of the year, middle linebacker Ray Lewis. But the biggest headlines he’s made were when he was charged with murder last year; the charges subse quendy were dropped in a plea bargain. Shannon Sharpe is one of the best tight ends ever to play the game. His prime, however, came and went with Denver. Several Giants certainly have catchy first names - Tiki, Amani -but they don’t have the flash of a Deion. Jason Sehom is engaged to television star Angie Harmon but says he’s merely an arm piece. America’s most glamorous game is missing, well, glamour. “It’s a little different,” said Sharpe, who won Super Bowl with the Broncos in 1998 and ‘99. “You don’t have the big names like John Elway and Brett Favre, or Terrell (Davis) andjamal (Anderson) (Thr Daily alar Hrrl | For Rent | EQUAL HOUSING OPPORTUNITY ALL REAL ESTATE AND RENTAL adver rising in this newspaper is subject to the federal Fair Housing Act of 1968 which makes it illegal to advertise 'any prefer ence. limitation, or discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin, or an intention to make any sac preference, limitation, or discrimina tion.' We’re not here to make stars of ourselves,” Pro Bowl linebacker Jessie Armstead said. “We’re here to win a champi onship.” Few teams have done that with such obscure casts. Not since the 1991 Washington Redskins has a club been as relatively faceless as these Giants and Ravens. But faceless to outsiders doesn’t nec essarily mean unknown to the players. Or does it? “We go for something called a tone setter,” Lewis said. “Our defense thrives on it. Basically, it’s taking your star out of the game. I don’t mean hitting him in the knee or anything like that. When their star has the ball, we’re going to make him pay for it, remember getting hit. It changes the whole game if you get to their star.” So, Ray, who is their star? His blank stare spoke volumes. Not that the Ravens are disrespecting a Pro Bowler such as Armstead, or a JOIN STV Open House Monday 7:00 pm in the STV Studio in the Union • uncstv.org | For Rent | SPACIOUS MODERN 6BR/ SBA TOWNHOUSE Available now, 6 May, & for August On busline, convenient to UNC living room with ceiling fan dining room, large kitchen with dishwasher, full size wash er/ dryer, central heating and air conditioning, ample parking, storage $350 per BR. 933-0983 or cell phone 516-6369. Game: No. 5 North Carolina at N.C. State Time: 1 p.m. Location: Entertainment and Sports Arena, Raleigh Radio: 100.7 FM. WCHL-1360 AM, WPTF-680 AM Television: Raycom/Jefferson Pilot, espn2 Series Record: UNC leads 126-70. Keys for UNC: The Tar Heels can't look ahead to Duke and take the Wolfpack lightly. This game is N.C. State's biggest of the season, and UNC must match the 'Pack’s emotion. Getting the ball inside to Brendan Haywood (16 points, 7.3 rebounds, 74.4 percent FG in last four meetings with NCSU) remains a good idea. Keys for N.C. State: Not quitting, as Damien Wilkins said the 'Pack did in the second half against Maryland, would be a good start. Effort shouldn't be a problem because the Wolfpack is playing its archrival, but fatigue could be an issue. The Wolfpack played Thursday night at Florida State and has had little rest. The team must take care of the ball (16.6 turnovers ranks last in ACC). UNC Bench: The Tar Heels have a legit nine-man rotation, their deepest in years. F Julius Peppers (5.7 points, 4.6 boards) is a monster, and G Max Owens (6.9 points) stretches defenses with his jump shot. N.C State Bench: Herb Sendek has fewer subs than he would tike, with injuries keeping G Archie Miller and F Michael Bell out. C Ron Kelley's surgically repaired left knee bothers him so much that he can't practice. Prediction: UNC 74, N.C. State 66 Compiled by T. Nolan Hayes record-setter such as Collins, who threw for five touchdowns in the 41-0 NFC tide game rout of Minnesota. They simply aren’t reminiscent of Lawrence Taylor or Phil Simms. “You can’t ever walk on the field and see your opponent across from you and think, ‘Hey man, he’s good,’” Lewis said. “The thing we live by is you never have to respect anybody else you’re playing against, but don’t disrespect them. That’s when you take it to a total ly different level.” The Giants seem to revel in semi anonymity. The versatile Barber isn’t even the No. 1 running back in his home stadium, not with Curtis Martin playing for the Jets. Does that bother Barber? Or his teammates? “We’ve been a team that is worried about Sundays and not Monday through Saturday and all that is said,” Barber said. “We’re about what gets things done.” Giants quarterback Kerry Collins got more attention for his alcoholic past than his play before this season. By Gavin Off Staff Writer North Carolina’s woman’s tennis team welcomed UNC-Greensboro to the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center Thursday night. But unfortunately for the Spartans, the Tar Heels pummeled them from start to finish with precision lobs, drop shots and over-head smashes. Women’s Tennis UNC-G 0 UNC 7 North Carolina swept all seven matches, and they consistendy punished UNC-G from both the baseline and the net. “I thought everybody competed well,” UNC coach Roland Thomqvist said. “We were focused, and we looked confident. That’s the key for our team.” The beating the Tar Heels laid on the Spartans came without two of UNO’s top players, sophomore Marlene Mejia and freshman Julie Rotondi. Both sat because because of mandatory restric tions on the number of events an athlete can compete in. North Carolina jumped on UNC-G early, blanking them 3-0 in doubles competition. UNC’s No. 1 seed of sophomores Kate Pinchbeck and Kendrick Bunn abused the Spartans with their powerful baseline play. They defeated UNC-G’s Christine Weber and Lindsey Peel by a score of 8-0. “That’s our strategy in every match,” Pinchbeck said. “We wanted to play from the baseline. It would have been an upset if we lost, but that wasn’t in the cards.” Joitv Us Before Or After Tke Movie v - <V; Ha ** *** ReNsodeUd H Tihxlxrlyt* Skof>(>i*7 Center Weaver Dkiry RJ, CUpel Hill. Call The Arc 942- 5119 Ext 12 942-5119 | Carpools | Thomqvist said Pinchbeck and Bunn’s unique playing technique was a main reason for their victory. Not many doubles teams play so well and so much from the back of the court “They play sort of an unorthodox style for doubles,” Thomqvist said. “They play back at the baseline, UNC senior Courtney Zalinski captured victories at No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles with Caroline Hill. and they do it well. That sometimes con fuses opponents.” When the Spartans did have the Tar Heels on the run, UNC-G’s unforced errors bailed North Carolina out. UNC never allowed Weber and Peel to get in sync. The Tar Heels kept them off guard by mixing their baseline play with a num ber of spins and drop-shots. “We were playing pretty consistent in both singles and doubles,” Pinchbeck said. “I think our consistency really hurt § TRAFFIC (Hit I, 9:4S SAT-SUN I 30, 415 1 . i . z 2 muoi out RnrouTioNs Best Picture i Best Actor: George Clooney 0 BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? 7:20. 9:20 SAT-SUN- 2 00, 4:00 ■;=--# i 7:20, 9:40 SAT-SUN 2:00, 4:00 7:10,9:20, 7 00,9:30. In the end, we wanted to come to the net and put them away.” Their consistency didn’t just hurt Weber and Peel, it sucked all the life out of them. And the dominance Pinchbeck and Bunn had in doubles competition didn’t stop there. Although Bunn said she lost her focus in the second set, she made quick work of Peel, her singles opponent. Bunn won the match 6-1,6-3 with solid serving and strong baseline hitting. “I had a close game at the end of the set,” she said. “I lost my concentration a little, but it didn’t hurt too much.” The Tar Heels welcome Kentucky to the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center this Sunday at 1 p.m.. Both Mejia and Rotondi will return to the lineup in hopes of defeating the team that beat North Carolina 5-4 twice in the last two years. “I think our players are really looking forward to playing them,” Thomqvist said. “But in a way I think it’s just another match for them. I feel really good about where we are right now.” The Sports Editor can be reached at sportsQunc.edu. PLAZA THEATRES IIM Elliott Rd.
