Dustyn will work to: ■ Eradicate temporary housing. ■ Improve working conditions and increase pay for housekeepers. ■ End the closing of residence halls during Fall Break. ■ Allow students 24 hours after the last exam to leave the residence halls. ■ Establish a residence hall pro gram to unify Greek students. We want an emphasis on student safety. Dustyn is aware of student safe ty concerns and will work with the Department of Public Safety to imple ment solutions. Dustyn wants to: ■ Demand the construction of more crosswalks on campus. ■ Improve nighttime P2P personal van services. ■ Increase the number of emer gency call boxes and improve campus lighting. ■ End fire lane parking during ath letic events. ■ Support the construction of bike paths. It’s Our Community - As Carolina students, we should respect and nurture diversity, create a stronger community and have fun: ■ Assist the Office of Minority Affairs in outreach programs to increase the diversity of the student body and the faculty. ■ Support a resource center for LGBT students. ■ Improve relations between Greeks and non-Greeks. ■ Support housekeepers’ and other workers’ rights. ■ Continue to hold annual TA Appreciation Barbeque at end of Graduate Student Appreciation Week. ■ Fight for disability access for buildings students use and encourage development of a disability awareness day. ■ Friendlier, easier-to-navigate stu dent organization funding process. ■ Campus organizations liaison to facilitate work of student groups. ■ Office supply commons for stu dent groups in new Union. ■ Student government reps will attend group meetings to hear student concerns. ■ Assist in development of United Students, a coalition of representatives from campus groups, to promote shar ing of resources. ■ Encourage seniors to come together and pledge to make a differ ence in our careen. ■ Bring together a diverse selection of campus groups for service projects. IV. It’s Our Future - We need to work together to protect and improve Carolina’s excellence and accessibility. ■ No unreasonable tuition increases. ■ Push for increased financial aid for ALL students. To learn how we will approach these issues and to give your input, check out our Web site at http://www.unc.edu/ ~ edj/ platform2.html. Vote Correy Campbell for SBP Tuition Increases I believe that the University and a group of dedicated students led by the student body president should fight tuition increases with every ounce of blood, sweat and tears in their bod ies. There should be guarantees and promises made by students and offi cials. We should definitely have a say in whether tuition should be increased. But they do not com municate with us about the subject That needs to change. Let’s change it together. Ticketing ■k / The increase in Correy Campbell construction is only going to decrease the parking spots we already have even more. Because of this off-campus students are going to dread coming to campus for fear of finding a ticket on their car rather than finding a legal space in which to park. Since we unfortunately have to carry the burden of expansion and construction for the future on our shoulders, I believe we are entitled to a compromise. First, public transportation should be increased. That is the only feasible solution. Second, first-time offenders should get an automatic appeal on their first ticket. No hassle. South Campus Construction I propose to lead a group of South Campus representatives to meet with University officials to discuss their con cerns and emotions about the present and future construction. Elect Annie Peirce Next Week ■ The addition of a chairman and vice chairman of student group representation to the president’s Cabinet, one of which will be a repre sentative from a minority organization. ■ Host monthly discussion forums on cultural diversity as a means to improve race relations on campus. ■ More financial aid packages ■ Improve academic advising. The advising system has made a lot of positive changes over the last two years. However, we are far from finished. We need more funding to hire more acade mic advisers and to give advisers additional bene fits so that they Annie Peirce will continue at UNC. We must develop an employment program that will attract competent advisers who will spend sufficient time with students and follow them through out their collegiate careers. ■ Fight for the continuation and improvement of after-hours care at Student Health Service. Student Health is the only health care available to many students. We need to have access to a physician at all times during the day or night. We not only deserve to be seen in a timely manner but also deserve a competent physician who is capable of properly diagnosing us since that is what we have paid for. We Pick Warren Watts for SBP My name is Warren V. Watts 11. I am a junior and a political science and peace, war and defense major from Arcadia. As stu dent body president I hope to be the most accessible and involved student on campus. I hope to create a presi dential e-mailing system to allow stu dents to contact me at anytime. This will include a mass e-mail, con- taining updates from the organi zations on cam pus as well as an update of the progress of Student Congress and my branch of government Working with Residence Hall Association, I will have each resi- i .v Warren Watts dence hall post these updates on every hall so that you will not have to search for them - they will just be there. ■ As far as being the most accessi ble student on campus, I will venture to every residence hall and hold open forums with the students. I will also hold Pit hours where students can come see me in the Pit instead of searching for me in my Union office. This does not only apply to myself, but my Cabinet will hold hours in the Pit The Addition of Majors and Minors I believe that if what the people want to major and minor in is not available, then it should be made avail able if the interest is there. We are not here just to read books and take exams; we are here to major and minor in subjects that we feel so strongly about. And to deny a major or a minor is, in my opinion, a denial of someone’s hopes and dreams. Spring Fling We have Fall Fest during the fall, and I would create Spring Fling for the spring. It would be a great opportunity for organization fund raising. Organizations can sponsor basketball tournaments where people pay to enter or dance contests. Off-Campus Internet Access Many off-campus students are unable to get electronic reserves from the online UNC library Web site from the comforts of their own homes like everyone else on campus. Also, many students in the music department are denied access to important music files that they need in order to practice and prepare for classes. I believe that the University should encourage Academic Technology & Networks to think of alternative ways to get UNC network access to those who live off campus so that they can fulfill their academic goals in an easier and more effective manner. More Funding and Fund-Raising Support for Club Sports I believe that if there’s a group of determined and interested students, ath letic or not, wanting to start a legitimate team sport, they should be funded. also need to investigate the need to re institute extended-care facilities. ■ The development of a Resource Center for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender population. We are one of only a few leading universities that does not have an LGBT Resource Center. LGBT students need to have information, support, resources and a place to go when they have questions and concerns. ■ Fight for more student parking by pushing for subterranean lots! With the upcoming increase in enrollment and the additional construction, students are losing what little parking they already have. I will represent students’ needs by encouraging the Master Plan Committee to add student parking. ■ Continue to improve the Carolina Computing Initiative. CCI is off to a good start, but there is still lots of work that needs to be done. Instructors need to be educated on how to teach from laptops effective ly in the classroom. Students need to be educated on how to use laptops effectively in the classroom as well. ■ Increase the University’s financial support of all sports clubs. Sports clubs do not have sufficient support or funding for basic necessities such as facilities, equipment, trans portation, safety training, emergency staff, etc. I will help the Club Sports Council find additional funding outside of what is already allocated by student fees. ■ Post every professor’s syllabus on the Web so that students can read it as well. I also hope to visit regularly with the heads of the organizations on campus in order to stay apprised of their wants and needs. ■ 1 hope to work with the elected Carolina Athletic Association president to find the best way to handle ticket distribution. I will also work with the president of the CAA on getting more attention drawn to our other sports, teams such as the ACC champion women’s soccer and volleyball teams. Our women’s soccer team is in the midst of a dynasty, winning 17 national championships in 20 years. ■ Parking is a very serious issue on campus, with a student population so large it is very difficult to find parking spots for all of us students. An idea being discussed now is the raising of student fees in order to give each stu dent an unlimited bus pass. I propose giving the students the option of either going with the system now or simply adding S2O to the price of the park and ride lot pass and instead of a 20-ride bus pass having an unlimited bus pass. ■ A major issue facing our University is that of grade inflation. I have done a survey of students and of these students none thought that grade inflation was a problem. So this will not be a concern of mine, but I will do further research in office to find if there actually is a problem. Monday, February 5, 2001 There should also be a committee to evaluate and plan alternative strategies of fund raising for team sports that need more than they are given. Book Costs There should be a committee of stu dents to analyze where the money is going. We should not have to look off campus for reasonable book prices. Dining Hall Hours Adding extra hours to operation hours would nullify some of the ineffi ciency and reduce the number of unused meals More Promotion of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Help Programs I am adamant about promoting pro fessional sources of help on campus for those that want it. People should not feel as though getting help for alcohol problems is taboo. More services and programs should be promoted so students do not feel uncomfortable about asking for help. C-TOPS Changes need to be made so that future freshmen are not bored when they come to C-TOPS. There should be a committee dedicated to revamp C-TOPS on an annual bases. And as and ex-orientation leader I can guaran tee that this will be done. Potluck Dinner I propose a pot luck Thanksgiving picnic for underprivileged families of the community. With grocery bills, increased tuition and obscene textbook prices, money in the hands of a college student is sacred. But one thing will always be cost-effective and good for the heart: a home-cooked meal. before they register for classes. ■ Require professors to give stu dents some assessment of their acade mic standing in a class before it is too late to drop the class. ■ Increase reliability of P2P Services. ■ Increase security in Davis Library with Davis Library now being open 24 hours. ■ The implementation of Fare-Free Transit! ■ Make the administrators more visi ble and responsive to students’ concerns. ■ Integration of more community service through student government The human relations committee of the executive branch of student government will work with other pre-existing com munity service groups to expand upon and develop new programs that will help the less fortunate in our community. ■ Fight any measures to lower stu dents’ grades as a response to last year’s report entided “Grade Inflation at UNC.” ■ Implementation of a double minor ■ Represent students’ needs con cerning the Curriculum Review. . ■ Increase communication through out campus so that students know what is going on. ■ Represent the needs of students who live off campus with the cities of Chapel Hill and Carrboro so that reali ty agencies and landlords do not take advantage of them. ■ Plant trees around the construc tion on South Campus ■ Two-ply toilette paper in all the bathrooms! ■ With our ever-increasing tuition and fees we must make sure as the state’s first university that we do not exclude those students of lower income from the opportunity of Carolina. As the tuition rises much faster than infla tion financial aid must rise equally. ■ UNC has recendy made it neces sary for all incoming freshmen to have a laptop computer. The main goal is to help each student come to school with a laptop and train in the use of that laptop. My hope is to try and persuade other computer manufacturers to come into the market here and provide more of a variety and -1 hope - better products. ■ I would like to improve the advis ing system by not only requiring incoming students to have an adviser but by setting them up with an advis ing team set up of sophomore and juniors. ■ A few years ago the University offered a review of the classes offered - The Carolina Course Review. I would like to bring this back and allow the students to write what they feel about the classes offered here. As an accessible and well-informed student body president, I hope to be in touch with all of the answers provided by students and faculty instead of being forced to make a decision based on my own biased experience. 11
