Satly (Ear Heel Autrey's Shutout Keeps Tar Heels From Being Swept Sophomore Scott Autrey struck out six batters in his complete-game victory to move to 2-3 on the season. Staff Reports CLEMSON, S.C. North Carolina pitcher Scott Autrey limited the Clemson offense to four hits as the Tar Heels defeated the Tigers 4-0 on Sunday HAMM From Page 12 there is that she cares about me much more as a person than as a competitor. That’s priceless.” The stadium was a little quieter for the eight minutes Hamm was on the sideline. The game continued, but many eyes were glued to the bench where Hamm sat with a trainer wrapping her knee. “I was ready to sub her and put Krista Davey in,” Freedom coach Jim Gabarra said. “She came off the field and was in a lot of pain, but she said ‘I want to play, I want to play.’” As many records as she set while donning a Carolina-blue jersey, Hamm was determined to make history for the WUSA. When a foul was called during injury time, Freedom defender Jennifer Grubb, who normally shares the duties of taking free kicks with Hamm, looked at her and said, “Good luck.” WUSA From Page 12 goals that they’re after.” Twenty players obviously couldn’t fill a league, causing the WUSA to hold drafts such as the Foreign Player Allocation Draft, a Global Draft and a Supplemental Draft, during which international stars such as Brazil’s Roseli joined the league. In considering the potential markets for hosting the initial teams, the group focused on cities that would provide a substantial cable television distribution. The league received a tremendous response from cities wishing to host a WUSA team. Initially, the league nar rowed its choices to a “Sweet 16” list of markets before announcing that its first eight WUSA teams would be in Atlanta, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Orlando-Tampa, San Diego, the San Francisco bay area and Washington. The Orlando-Tampa team was later relocated to the Raleigh-Durham area. Six months later it was announced that the teams would be the Adanta Beat, Bay Area Cyberßays, Boston Breakers, Carolina Courage, New York Power, Philadelphia Charge, San Diego Spirit and Washington Freedom. The eight teams comprised one divi sion with each team playing a 21-game schedule. At the end of the season, the top four teams advance to the playoffs. Autrey (2-3) struck out six in nine innings and did not allow a runner to reach third. He outdueled Clemson’s Steve Reba (8-3), who struck out five in 8 1/3 but was credited with all four earned runs. Both pitchers dominated early and combined to allow only five hits in the “There wasn’t a conversation -1 was going to take that one,” said Hamm, who snuck the shot in near the lower left post. Being swarmed by teammates in white jerseys to celebrate victory on Fetzer Field was a feeling Hamm knew well. But celebrating as a professional? That’s something Hamm said she couldn’t even fathom during her years as a Tar Heel. And although the field looked differ ent, with additional seats and Carolina Courage logos splashed all over the stands, Hamm was glad to be home. “It’s amazing to see Fetzer dressed up like this,” Hamm said. “It fills you with all different types of emotions. On the way here, we were telling the bus driver which way to go, which was the short est way. We all feel like our time here was one of the most special times you could ever ask for.” The Sports Editor can be reached at sports@unc.edu. The WUSA Championship Classic will be played August 25. Although it will cost about S4O mil lion to fund the league during its first five years of operations, now young fans can dream about a career that Hamm never imagined while in college. “We weren’t even in the Olympics, were only barely able to create a World Cup for ourselves, so a professional game was so far away,” Hamm said. “It wasn’t even a thought in my mind at that point” The Sports Editor can be reached at sports@unc.edu. Tar Heels Sweep Terps COLLEGE PARK, Md. - In an ACC/S AS A doubleheader batde at the Maryland’s North Softball Complex, North Carolina downed the Terrapins 2-0 and 1-0. The Tar Heels (34-17-1 over all, 6-2 ACC/SASA) gained advantages that they would not relinquish in both contests to pick up the pair of victories. WOMEN S LACROSSE From Page 12 Thompson opened up UNC’s offense by putting the ball in the back of the cage at 29:25 of the first half. She would add four more goals and two assists during the course of the game. Mclnnes scored back-to-back goals at the 20:18 and 16:51 marks en route to tallying three goals and one assist on the day. Stone followed her teammates’ lead, netting four goals and adding two assists. “Coming off Friday’s loss, it was important for us to put everything together,” Stone said. “That was our goal for the day.” With the attackers scoring at will, the defense had to hold its own if that goal was to be reached. Coyne and the Tar Heel defenders didn’t disappoint. Coyne allowed four goals in 42 min utes of work before she was replaced by backup Margaret Garofalo. Garofalo kept up the defensive intensity, yielding one goal during the last 18 minutes of the matchup. “Today was a great game for our CAT’S CRADLE 300 E.
