Reno will file paperwork to enable her to raise money for the gubernatorial bid, two Democratic sources said Monday, speaking on condition of anonymity. Reno said Monday that she planned to announce whether she would seek the office. “I think you should stay tuned,” Reno told reporters at a Labor Day pic nic near her home in southwest Miami- Dade County on Monday. Reno is the only potential Democratic candidate who has yet to open a campaign account to begin rais ing money for the race. She has said she would only open an account if she plans to seek the nomina tion. Three union members handed Reno an anti-Jeb Bush T-shirt. The words “Jeb 2002” were circled and crossed out on the T-shirt with the words “Nuff Said” emblazoned underneath. Polls have shown Reno beating other Democrats seeking the nomination but losing to Bush, who is seeking re-elec tion. From Page One GUIDES From Page 1 university. “There is nothing more important than a campus visit,” he said. Guides and members of the admis sions office staff chose new volunteers each September. Applications are due Wednesday. Jared Rosenberg, assistant director of admissions, said applicants must exhibit enthusiasm for the University and the ability to deal with surprise sit uations. And on her tour, MacLaggan did just that. As orange cones and noisy con struction crews blocked her tour path, she rerouted her group, pausing to explain that some of the campus improvements are funded by the N.C. $3.1 billion higher education bond. During a day-long orientation ses sion in September, guides are trained in etiquette and emergency proce dures and educated about University history and .current events. First-time volunteers mifst shadow two guides and lead a mock tour before meeting their first visitor group. Despite the training, Rosenberg said tours are spontaneous. “We get a lot of feedback about our tour guides,” he said. “We have started keeping a tour guide brag book with very personal thank yous to specific guides.” Sheena Portas, a high school senior from Maine, said campus toms are one of the most influential aspects in choosing a college. “If the tour guide is really passionate, it shows that they love their school,” said Portas, who went on a tour with MacLaggan last Wednesday. “I came down here to see Duke, but I’m actually liking UNC better.” The Features Editor can be reached at features@unc.edu. ATN officials said they would rather limit traffic and improve resources than ban all file sharing. “Asa matter of practice, we try not to limit technology ... unless it has a neg ative impact,” she said. There are certain programs in which file sharing is useful for academic pur poses, Smythe said, and it would not be in the University’s best interest to block access to them. “There are legitimate uses of these programs - therefore, we want to allow (file sharing),” she said. “We’ll try to think out of the box, cer- 18 Canadian tribe members 24 Tour workers 26 Current 27 Coarse file 28 Environs 29 De-emphasized 30 Night follower 32 Gridlock 34 Normandy town 35 "Jane " 2 Lotion additive, often 3 John Wayne movie, "Sands of Iwo " 4 Worker's extra $ 5 FDR group 6 M 1 7 Plant of the arum family 8 Wide shot 9 Relaxes 10 Dundee of box ing 11 From top to bottom 12 Totally unreac tive 13 Wise men ■lO 111 |l2 113 mi 19 22 “■ _ _ mg~ 34 35 39 47 48 H 49 50 52 KT 54 55 56 “ “ ~ " ” p 9 UO Uo' I^gg62 ‘ Hr - (Slip iaily (Ear Hppl tainly.” And this sentiment is appreciated by many students. Sophomore Ben Gamer said it would n’t be feasible for ATN to block file shar ing because of the excessive amounts of programs that continue to develop. “I think as far as trying to ban it all, that would be very difficult,” he said. But spending the money to upgrade resources and implement rate limiting doesn’t seem efficient either, said sopho more Jadine Johnson. Johnson said there might be better options to alleviate the network strain. “It seems like the University is taking the easy way out.” The University Editor can be reached at udesk@unc.edu.
