Whe Smly dar Ufri Martin's Offense Pays Dividends Senior Abby Martin scored four goals and racked up 10 points in the Tar Heels' sweeps of PSU and VCU. By Adam D. Hili •Staff Writer Coming into the 2001 campaign, senior and third-team All-American Abby Martin knew she would have to take her game to an even higher level. North Carolina’s leading scorer from 2000, Kristen McCann, used up her eli gibility, and the team would lose mid fielder Carrie Lingo and goalkeeper Amy Tran to the U.S. national field hockey team for seven games in September. “I knew during the summer that I would have to take a real leadership role,” Martin said. “I knew it was time to • step up my game.” Step up her game on the offensive end of the field, that is. Martin has been a defensive stalwart, playing sweeper, right back and in the midfield during her career, but this sea- Durant Furthers QB Question Quarterback Darian Durant moved the ball against the Terps but was unable to connect on any touchdowns. By Rachel Carter Sports Editor COLLEGE PARK, Md. - When Darian Durant stepped on the field of Byrd Stadium, people wondered if the redshirt freshman could do it again. Could he spark North Carolina to a rally and help them charge back from a deficit? Unfortunately for Durant and the Tar Heels, the answer was pretty much no. He did move the ball well, something starting quarterback Ronald Curry struggled with again. But instead of being responsible for two touchdowns, * Durant was charged with two intercep tions. His numbers were also still better than Curry’s. Durant was 10 of 14 for 97 yards and was sacked twice. Curry went 6 of 12 for 61 yards. He was picked off and was also sacked twice. “I thought Darian played pretty well when he was in there. Can he play bet ter? I think so,” North Carolina coach John Bunting said. “We had a couple HELD HOCKEY From Page 12 But the real story of the weekend was the contributions from North Carolina’s ,young and unsung heroes, who made •the most of their late minutes. Nine players scored during Sunday’s eruption, including career firsts by true freshmen Kerry Falgowski, Charlotte Plugge and redshirt freshman Amber Chambers. “I’m proud of those kids,” Shelton said. “Amber is a great example - she’s MEN'S SOCCER From Page 12 Mountaineers (0-1) that gave UNC fits. Two ASU players were handed red cards, the first when North Carolina’s Noz Yamauchi was knocked down for a second time by Andrew Rhodes. While giving up six inches to the 5-foot-10 Rhodes, Yamauchi said he was willing to keep batding throughout the night. “I got hit a couple of times, but I just tried to isolate him and draw some fouls,” Yamauchi said. “I come against She iathj dar linl Wheels for Sale | 1993 SATURN SCI Black. 5 speed. Judging from her performance this weekend against Penn State and Virginia Commonwealth, Martin is living up to those personal expectations. Martin explod ed for 10 points this weekend, posting four goals and two assists. She had two goals and one assist in each game, acting as a catalyst for the Tar Heels’ offensive out burst. In each of the two games Martin scored the first goal, as she did in UNC’s first victory of the season against Connecticut. “It’s my job to get in there and put the ball away,” Martin said. Although Martin understands her role as a scorer, she doesn’t try to force things on the field. Instead, she tries to let the game come to her, and things dropped balls, they made some plays and the ball got tipped around and intercepted. I think Darian went in and once again he’s out there, try ing to make plays. “Once again, he will scramble to make a play; he’s evasive and that’s a great qual ity to have, espe cially right now where we’re at.” Where the Tar Heels are at is a cross roads. The quarterback position has blossomed into a question, with Durant telling the media that “It’s the coach’s decision to make” instead of “Ronald’s still the man,” like he did after Oklahoma. Bunting said after the game that he was inclined to leave things as they were. But if Curry can’t mount dri ves like Durant has been, Bunting might be inclined to rethink things. When Bunting put Durant in the game with a little more than six minutes remain ing in the third quarter, Durant immedi ately connected for an 11-yard gain with senior wideout Kory Bailey. The catch been playing really well in practice. She needed to be able to get in there and try hard.” UNC benefited from timely offense and defensive stops Saturday against the Nittany Lions. The Tar Heels closed the half locked in a 1-1 tie but were able to raise their energy in the second half. North Carolina wasted litde time after intermission to regain the lead, drawing a penalty comer four minutes into the half. On the comer option, senior sweeper Abby Martin blasted a shot that rico this all the time, so I get used to it.” Like Bolowich, Yamauchi empha sized the Mountaineers’ aggressive play as a key to the game. “I think they just had more heart in the first half, and we talked about that at halftime,” Yamauchi said. “We are happy with the result, but we still have some things to work on.” Gell also tallied an assist in the 47th minute on a David Testo goal. Once Testo setded the ball, the junior flipped it over his head and fired it into the right side. Not only did the newcomers play, they helped Martin and the seniors seal the two victories. Redshirt freshman Amber Chambers posted a pair of goals on Sunday, as did Senior sweeper Abby Martin dished out two assists in addition to her four goals this weekend. marked Bailey’s 100th career reception. But in that series, Tony Jackson picked Durant off for a 21-yard pass meant for UNC wideout Sam Aiken. Durant’s other INT came in the fourth on a throw to Bailey. Terp comerback Curome Cox batted it down and team mate Mike Whaley dove to the ground and plucked the ball out of the air before it hit the ground. - Change of Style Helps Perry In Maryland’s auditions for LaMont Jordan’s replacement, Bruce Perry has emerged as the Terrapins’ guy. But getting his name at the top of the depth chart wasn’t easy. “I was in the doghouse (with Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen),” Perry said. “I know I was in the doghouse.” Perry naturally zig-zags up the field, but Friedgen, a former offensive coordi nator, made Perry change to a North- South style because it would give oppos ing defenses less time to tackle him. Although it took him some time to get it down, Perry employed his new style against UNC and rushed for 116 yards. Perry said, “I realize that the change will get us where we need to be.” The Sports Editor can be reached at sports@unc.edu. Senior midfielder Carrie Lingo, in front of the right side of the net, redi rected the ball into the left side of the goal. Then, with 10 minutes remaining and the Tar Heels clutching a one-goal lead, Martin struck again. She was fed a perfect cross by Woolley and was able to slide past the goalie on the right side, flicking the clincher to the left comer. “Everyone really works together in the offense,” Woolley said. “We are building through a lot of passes, which is amassed 26 fouls and three cards to keep pace with the Mountaineers. In the 86th minute, Jonathan Davis was fouled in the box, which resulted in UNC’s first penalty kick. The free boot was given to Yamauchi, who pelted the ball low and right for an easy goal. The insurance goal made it 3-0. Davis was another victim of the rising attacks, but knew the smaller ASU team would have to resort to different mea sures as the underdog. “I knew they were going to come after us,” Davis said. “Sometimes you over-prepare as a small school when you play someone bigger, but they figured For Rent \ Sports they would have to play rough to win.” Bolowich said ASLPs play was enough to warrant some frustration at times “We did not keep our cool in terms of the play,” Bolowich said. All was cool in North Carolina’s win against East Carolina. Eight players recorded goals for the Tar Heels, includ ing Matt Crawford, Sean McGinty, Marcus Storey and Ryan Kneipper. ECU’s lone goal came at the 84th minute on a center strike by Joe Ellington. The Sports Editor can be reached at sports@unc.edu. Classified Advertising Sublets j HIGHLAND HILLS. When you’re inside your one-yard line, you are limited as to what you can do.” With the score tied at seven in the sec ond quarter, Barnard blasted a 55-yard punt to the Tar Heels’ 11-yard line, and the momentum shifted. Parker attempt ed four carries and ended up getting tackled by safety Tyrone Stewart in the end zone to put the Terps up by two. “What a punting job he did,” Friedgen said. “Not only did he punt with average, but he kicked the ball within the 10-yard line I don’t know FOOTBALL From Page 12 struggled - in the fourth quarter, they became tired and allowed Maryland to put the game out of reach. Bruce Perry, a redshirt sophomore, debuted in bis role as successor to LaMont Jordan and rushed for 116 of Maryland’s 161 running yards. Perry has been learning to run North-South instead of his East-West style because of Friedgen, a former offensive coordina tor at Georgia Tech. Perry ran at North Carolina’s defense, going with the philosophy that it was better to run at them than have Julius Peppers and Ryan Sims in pur suit. Peppers was one of UNC’s bright spots - he sacked Maryland quarter back Shaun Hill three times for a loss of 19 yards. With Perry blazing a path to the goal line, pressure was lifted off of Hill, who went 10 of 26 for 86 yards. He struggled in the early goings to find his receivers but got in a groove in the second half. He tossed two TDs to Jafar Williams and Scooter Monroe. The 6-foot-3,225- pound Marc Riley scored the Terps’ last touchdown on a one-yard run. Although Perry (5-9, 190 pounds) did the lion’s share of getting the ball in the red zone, he said he understood why he finished the day without a TD. “You know, the situation calls for a big back,” Perry said of Riley’s score. “When you’re down in the red zone, goal line, you need someone big to get it in there.” Perry’s UNC counterpart, Willie Parker, opened the game for the Tar Heels in spectacular fashion. Maryland punter Brooks Barnard kicked a 27-yarder out of bounds, leav ing the Tar Heels on their 23. For the first offensive play of UNC’s afternoon, quarterback Ronald Curry dropped straight back and handed off to Parker, who took off for a 77-yard nm, scoring North Carolina’s only touchdown of the afternoon with 13:12 left in the first quarter. Parker’s run was the longest since a 90-yard carry by Curtis Johnson in 1993. “It was a momentum setter,” UNC center Adam Metis said. “We were real excited. Everybody executed. It was a perfectly executed play. We broke then backs on it, I thought. I thought, maybe we can set the tone of the game." But North Carolina’s offense could not repeat Parker’s feat. Parker finished the game with 114 yards on 13 carries - or 37 yards on 12 carries after that first offensive series. The difference in field position - especially when you’re strug gling offensively - is huge in the game.” And Barnard was happy to con tribute to UNC’s offensive struggles. Of North Carolina’s 14 drives on the day, nine began inside its own 25-yard line. Seven of those nine began immediately after a Barnard punt. “To put them inside the 10 and a cou ple times inside the 20, having to drive the whole field, I think that was a big edge for us,” Terps defensive tackle Charles Hill said. All this from a guy who had to have his teammates sneak him bananas on water breaks and was scarfing down energy bars during halftime. Barnard said, “If that’s the result, then I’ll be chowing down on Power Bars at halftime and be 30 seconds late to breakfast every game.” The Sports Editor can be reached at sports@unc.edu. Tailback, Andre Williams gained a mere 10 yards on nine carries, while Curry ran for 24 yards. “Right now, we’re not doing a good enough job up front execut ing,” Bunting said. “I don’t think we’re getting between the lead blocker on the offensive line. I don’t think we’re creating enough space for our runners to make plays. “Once again, that is not a total sur prise. They’re young kids. That’s why we played at Oklahoma. That’s why I was hoping we’d see a big improvement this week.” Of course, it was not just youth on the Tar Heels’ offensive line that kept the running game on the ground. The Maryland defense matched up well against the Tar Heels, and the Terps were able to turn their anger about Parker’s touchdown into defensive fuel. The defense recorded 4.5 sacks, includ ing one of Curry for a safety in the sec ond quarter. After Parker scored, Friedgen turned around and looked at his team. He did n’t yell at them, or accuse the defense of missing assignments. Instead, he made a promise to them. He said, “That’s the last time they are going to score today.” The Sports Editor can be reached at sports@unc.edu. Of""* PLAZA THEATRES IMH Elliott Rd.
