(Slip Satly (Tar Hppl Volleyball Sweeps Davidson Outside hitter Laura Greene tallied 12 kills and 10 digs against the Wildcats, her third double-double this year. Staff Report DAVIDSON - The North Carolina volleyball team defeated Davidson 3-0 Tuesday night at Belk Arena in Davidson. The Tar Heels won the first two games by narrow two point mar gins, 30-28 in the first and 35-33 in the Volleyball UNC 3 Davidson 0 second, before taking the final game by a 30-16 count. NCAA volleyball has changed its scoring this year. Instead of playing to 15 points, squads will play a 30-point rally game. This way, each play will end with one team being rewarded with a point. In other words, a team does not have to serve to receive a point Junior outside hitter Laura Greene tallied her third double-double of the season Tuesday, totaling 12 kills to go along with 10 digs. Nicole Reis was one dig away from her third double-double of the year, finishing with 15 kills and nine digs. Malaika Underwood filling in for injured setter Eve Rackham. Underwood totaled 38 sets and also had three kills and six digs. With the win, the Tar Heels move to 3-0 for the season, while Davidson evens its record at 2-2. UNC is back in action this weekend at the Santa Clara Invitational in Santa Clara, Calif. UNC will face UC-Santa Barbara at 10 a.m. PST and Creighton at 5 p.m. PST on Saturday, and Santa Clara on Sept. 9 at 1:30 p.m. PST. Both UNC starters will be in a train ing camp with the national team until this coming Sunday. At that time the U.S. squad will be cut and will compete next week in Nike Cup games in Chicago, Kansas City and Columbus. If Reddick and Kluegel do not make the team they will return for UNC’s game against Clemson on Sept. 12. In other women’s soccer news, North Carolina remains atop the Senior midfielder Jena Kluegel played for tne national team this summer and is trying out again. NSCAA/Adidas Women’s Division I poll following an opening weekend which saw it escape with a 1-0 victory at No. 17 Texas. UCLA, Notre Dame and Nebraska also got off to undefeated starts and fill the next three positions, respectively. Portland rounds out the top five, by [FREEUPI Sports virtue of a 1-0 loss. Martin Named Player of the Week North Carolina senior midfielder Abby Martin has earned ACC Player of the Week honors in field hockey after notching four goals and three assists for the Tar Heels in two victories last week end. Saturday, Martin scored two goals and added one assist to help North Carolina to a 3-1 victory against No. 9 Penn State. On Sunday, Martin had two goals and two assists in a 13-0 win versus Virginia Commonwealth. Martin, who is from Saratoga Springs, N.Y., leads the team in goals for the sea son with five. She also is the team’s points leader with 13. The top-ranked Tar Heels are now 3-0 and will travel to Philadelphia this weekend for the Temple Invitational on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Men's Soccer Reaches 4th in Poll The North Carolina men’s soccer team moved up a spot to No. 4 in the lat est NSCAA/Adidas national poll, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America announced Tuesday. The Tar Heels, who have opened the 2001 cam paign with back-to-back wins, were ranked No. 5 last week. UNC is the highest-ranked ACC team in the NSCAA/Adidas poll for the second week in a row. The Tar Heels also are ranked No. 1 in the South Region rankings, a key factor in NCAA Tournament seedings and selections. The Tar Heels opened their 2001 sea son with a 8-1 victory against East Carolina last Friday and followed up that win with a 3-0 shutout of Appalachian on Monday evening. Swimming Schedule Announced The North Carolina swimming and diving teams will face challenging sched ules again during the 2001-02 season. UNC coach Frank Comfort’s team will open the season at home against Georgia Wednesday, September 5, 2001 on Oct 17. This year’s home schedule includes dual meets against Georgia, Clemson, Virginia and N.C. State. “We look forward to competing against some very good teams this year," Comfort said. “It is always a challenge to open up with Georgia, and the Bulldogs’ women’s team has been the dominant team in the nation the past few years. But we look for ward to those kinds ofrchallenges.” Finley Golf Course Lauded North Carolina’s Finley Golf Course, was recently named one of the state of North Carolina’s top 25 golf courses by Pub Links Golf Magazine. Finley was ranked ninth in the annual golf course ratings for the Tar Heel state for 2001. Finley Golf Course has received sev eral other accolades recendy. It was voted Best Public Golf Course by trian gle.citysearch.com using Internet voting. Finley Golf Course was also ranked 12th by members of the North Carolina Magazine Golf Panel. 7
