cEhr Daily (Ear Hrrl Reid's Interception Pivotal In UNC Victory Sophomore free safety Dexter Reid helped extend UNC's 23-17 lead with a 67-yard interception return in the fourth quarter against UVa. Bv Brad Broders Assistant Sports Editor Lost in the shuffle of North Carolina’s 30-24 vic tory against Virginia was the play from safety Dexter Reid, the man responsible for a 67-yard interception return that broke the Cavaliers’ backs. Reid had six total tackles on the day but will be remembered most for his instinct with 12:45 left in the fourth quarter. Reid’s quick hands off a deflected pass from Cavalier quarterback Matt Schaub all but saved UNC. Trailing 23-17 early in the fourth quarter, Virginia marched to the UNC 35 and looked to score the go-ahead touchdown. Enter Reid. The sophomore free safety was able to snag the pass off Virginia receiver Kase Luzar’s shoulder and scampered 67 yards down the right sideline untouched. It was the decisive turnover UNC need ed hanging on to a precarious six-point advantage. “A turnover on defense is huge in a game, and any time you get a turnover and score, it’s real huge,” Reid said. Perkins Returns to Tar Heels Defensive tackle Anthony Perkins, expected to miss all of 2001 after tearing his medial cruciate lig ament and part of his posterior cruciate ligament, unexpectedly saw game action on Saturday. The senior, who started every game last year, entered early and assisted on a tackle. “Everything went well,” Perkins said of his return. “I just have to understand I’m not going to be that type of senior I was before. It’s going to take some time, but I know I can get there.” Perkins returned to practice on Oct. 2, but UNC coach John Bunting appeared surprised that week when reporters told him UNC trainer Dan Hooker had predicted Perkins would be ready to play by the Virginia game. That week, Perkins wore the green jersey that signifies that he’s not to be hit or tackled and worked on individual drills. Red Zone Woes Although the Tar Heels held on to win Saturday, Mariners Move on To ALCS Jamie Moyer pitched six innings to lead Seattle to a 3-1 win in the deciding game of the division series. The Associated Press SEATTLE - This unexpected season of seasons isn’t nearly finished for the Seattle Mariners. Back home where the Mariners’ magic multiplies, baseball’s best team during the regular season guaranteed it would be around for most of October. Jamie Moyer tamed Cleveland’s bats for six innings, Ichiro Suzuki got three more hits, and Mark McLemore drove in two runs Monday as the Mariners advanced to the ALCS with a 3-1 win against the Cleveland Indians in the deciding Game 5 of their opening round playoff series. After saving their record-setting sea son on Sunday by winning Game 4 in Cleveland, the Mariners returned to the safety and screaming fans in Safeco Field and did what they’ve done all season. They got solid starting pitching, clutch base hits, solid relief work and won for the 119th time since April. There was no wild celebration after David Bell threw out Juan Gonzalez at first for the final out. The Mariners know they still have a lot of work ahead. As 47,867 stood and cheered, the players exchanged hugs and high-fives near second base before heading to a clubhouse celebration. And now, the Mariners advance to their third ALCS - they also appeared in ’95 and ’OO -but for the first time, they’ll have home-field advantage when they get there. UNC had the ball inside Virginia’s 20-yard line three times but could only score six once, when Andre Williams’ scored on a 7-yard run. Virginia forced UNC place kicker Jeff Reed to kick 22- and 30-yard field goals, respectively, on the other two red zone trips. “We had opportunities to score almost 35 more points with those field goals and interceptions," said UNC senior center Adam Metts. Offensive Line Improvements After rushing for a career-best 147 yards on 28 carries, Williams credited his totals to his offensive in front of him. “It feels good to get 100 yards, but it’s not me getting 100 yards,” Williams said. “It’s the whole offense, the offensive line, basically. That’s their 100 yards.” Metts credited the young offensive line’s grad ual improvement in large part to the guidance from offensive line coach Robbie Caldwell. “(Caldwell’s) got a lot of pressure on him. But he’s been keeping on us, he’s been coaching us hard, and it’s been paying off,” Metts said. Rush Defense Steps Up Again Despite Virginia’s Schaub having a field day against the Tar Heels’ secondary, completing 33 passes for 334 yards, UNC’s defensive front again held the opposition’s rushing game in check. North Carolina shut down any type of consistent running game for the Cavaliers. The result was only 71 total yards on 18 carries, the Tar Heels’ sec ond-best performance since they allowed 52 yards on 20 carries against N.C. State on SepL 29. The Tar Heels entered Saturday’s game ranked fourth in the ACC in rush defense. “We thought coming in that it would be impor tant for us to throw the ball against them,” Schaub said. “We got some rhythm going, of course we would have liked a better outcome.” The Sports Editor can be reached at sports@unc.edu. Weekend Points Snag Martin Honor Abby Martin scored two goals and tallied an assist in North Carolina's 4-1 victory against Virginia on Saturday. From Staff Reports North Carolina senior back Abby Martin was named ACC Player of the Week in field hockey after tallying seven points in two contests this week end. The Tar Heels were victorious in both of the matches, including a 4-1 decision against conference foe and eighth-ranked Virginia. In that win, Martin scored two goals and assisted on another to pace UNC with five points. On Sunday, the native of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., assisted on two of North Carolina’s scores as the Tar Heels topped Radford 8-0. Martin also earned Player of the Week honors Sept. 3. UNC takes on Old Dominion at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Henry Stadium and plays Maryland and at Duke on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Reid Picks Up Award North Carolina free safety Dexter Reid is this week’s ACC Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday. Reid had eight tackles, an intercep tion and a touchdown in the Tar Heels’ 30-24 victory against ACC foe Virginia. While it was the second consecutive game in which Reid picked off a pass, this one resulted in a 67-yard, fourth quarter touchdown return that proved m Course Open to the Public Autumn Specials *Mon-Thurs S2O with cart; sl2 walking Friday $22 with cart; sl4 walking Sat & Sun $27 after 1 lam and s23after 3pm Call 919-942-0783 for Tee Times * >'V* aTN. State Denies Cheating 'Pack coach Chuck Amato said Clemson's allegations that N.C. State cheated in Saturday's game are false. The Associated Press RALEIGH, N.C. - North Carolina State coach Chuck Amato said his staff didn’t cheat in last weekend’s loss to Clemson by having a television monitor in the coaching box. “We are not going to cheat here. We’re not going to break the rules,” Amato said Monday when asked about the charge brought by Clemson coach Tommy Bowden. Bowden, who was once a fellow assistant with Amato at Florida State, said during a Sunday night media tele conference that Wolfpack assistant coaches might have been charting the plays of Clemson quarterback Woodrow Danzler via the monitor in the coaching box. NCAA rules prohibit coaches from watching replays while the game is in progress. “Either they were watching it at half time or charting (plays),” Bowden said after his team’s 45-37 victory in which Dantzler set a school record with 517 yards of total offense. “There were too many people up there for it to be Casper the Ghost or something. We’ll find out. That’s not right if it happened.” Amato said the accusation is false, and there is a simple explanation for the television monitor. A monitor was placed in each box at Carter-Finley Stadium this season when the Wolfpack installed anew $2 million scoreboard because some seats are blocked from the scoreboard’s video screen. Amato said N.C. State’s first oppo nent - Indiana - was asked if it wanted the monitor and the Hoosiers refused, saying it took up too much space. The monitor was removed and never placed back into the opponents’ coaching box while the Wolfpack coaches kept theirs. Amato claims the monitor only shows what is replayed on the large scoreboard seen by coaches on the side line and 51,500 fans. “It was an oversight not asking (Clemson) before this game,” Amato said. “We asked them at halftime. They said they didn’t want one and we took the one out in our box. “It’s now gone for good.” ACC supervisor of officials Tommy Hunt called Amato on Monday afternoon and told him to remove the monitor.
