Edwards’ Court Date
Moved To January
The first trial of Dwayne Russell
Edwards, scheduled to begin Thursday
at the Orange County Courthouse in
Hillsborough, has been continued until
Jan. 10.
Edwards was expected to appear on
49 charges - 45 of them felonies.
The charges included offenses such
as financial card theft, larceny and
breaking and entering.
Edwards was apprehended in
Carrboro on Jan. 9 in connection with
three separate sexual assaults in Chapel
Hill and Carrboro.
He was held at the Orange County
Jail on a $4.1 million bond.
His trial for the sexual offenses -
which includes 24 additional felony
counts including three first-degree rape
charges - will begin Dec. 10 at the
Orange County Superior Court in
Hillsborough.
Hand Grenade Found
At Carrboro Residence
A Carrboro man discovered a hand
grenade hanging on a plant hook near
an unused doorway as he stepped out
side his home Sunday.
The resident kept clear of the
grenade after he noticed that the safety
clip that prevents the device from deto
nating was missing.

President of Chile Set
To Give Address Today
Chilean President Ricardo Lagos will
speak to students and faculty and
receive an honorary degree from the
University today.
Lagos, who has led Chile since his
election in January 2000, will discuss
issues confronting Chile and the rest of
Latin America.
His speech will begin at 4 p.m. in the
Morehead Lounge of the Morehead
Planetarium. It is free and open to the
public.
He also will meet with Latin
American Studies students before the
afternoon ceremony.
Lagos was a faculty member at UNC
from 1973-75.
