ahr Satly (Tar BM UNC Faces New Questions Game and time: Wake Forest at North Carolina. Kickoff is at noon. Records: Wake Forest is 4-4, 2-4 in the ACC. North Carolina is 5-4, 4-2 in the ACC. Series: North Carolina leads 65-30-2. Injuries: Wake Forest - QB Anthony Young is doubtful. North Carolina - DT Jonas Seawright (left knee) is doubtful. OT Justin Barton is out. SS DeFonte Coleman (left shoul der), DT Will Chapman (left knee), and WR Isaiah Robinson (right knee) are out for the season. Hie key matchup: North Carolina has enjoyed tremendous success with its two-quarterback system of Ronald Curry and Dari an Durant, going 5-0. Last week, with Curry nursing a sore hamstring, redshirt freshman Durant started for the first time in his career, completing 22 of 37 passes for 286 yards and three touchdowns against Georgia Tech’s ACC-leading defense. But the Tar Heels still lost, 28-21. Now, because of personal tragedies, both members of that tag team might be unavailable for Saturday’s game. Durant returned to practice for the first time Thursday evening since Saturday, when he went to Florence, S.C. after the death of his stepmother. He shared time with redshirt freshman Aaron Leak in practice, taking about 60 percent of the snaps. “Darian, especially coming from a tragic situation that’s happened to him and his family, he did a good job of coming here and picking up on a lot of things,” said UNC center Adam Metts. “I felt like he stepped right in without having to step off.” Curry, meanwhile, is still in Hampton, Va., where he will attend the funeral of his cousin at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. Bunting said earlier in the week that he would have no problem playing either Curry or Durant should they return in time for the game because both have had ample experience run ning the offense this season. But he said Thursday that he had made no decision about the starter and that a choice could come as late as Saturday morning. So the possibility remains that Leak, who has thrown only one pass this sea son, a 24-yard completion, could take his share of snaps against Wake Forest. That makes the running game even more important for the Tar Heels. Tech tailback Joe Bums ran through the Tar Heels at will, rushing for a career-high 198 yards. The Demon Deacons boast tailback Tarence Williams, who is coming off of a recent ankle injury. Williams is third in the conference with 98.7 rushing yards per game and has six touch downs. “Nobody’s going to nut like that on this team again,” said UNC defensive tackle Julius Peppers. “I can almost guarantee that.” If he’s right, the Demon Deacons should find points hard to come by because they’ll be putting the confer ence’s worst passing offense against the ACC’s best pass defense. If Durant ends up playing, this game could be over early. If Leak ends up playing, it could come down to the wire. Either way, the Tar Heels should impress the Peach Bowl representatives. Trusted Absentia) Sports Tomecka Leads Tar Heels to Win Despite Lackluster Play in Tourney Midfielder Jena Kluegel said the Tar Heels need to play with more intensity or their season will end early. Bv Kelly Lusk Assistant Sports Editor WINSTON-SALEM - N.C. State goalkeeper Gretchen Lear was hoping she wouldn’t see a 5-foot-11 shadow creep ing around her box Thursday. Women’s Soccer N.C. State 0 UNC I Unfortunately for the Wolfpack, Maggie Tomecka’s presence close to the net was undeniably clear in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals. Tomecka converted a Catherine Reddick comer kick in the 26th minute to give the North Carolina women’s soc cer team a 1-0 victory against N.C. State. The Tar Heels (17-0, 8-0 in the ACC) advance to the semifinal game at 8 p.m. today at Wake Forest’s Spry Stadium. “(Tomecka) is a big threat,” said N.C. State coach Laura Kerrigan. “We put Erin Bushey, one of the best defenders in the nation, on her. But she’s a great player in the air, and it’s hard to defend her. Even the best defender can’t help that.” Women's Basketball Tips Off in WNIT Staff Report The North Carolina women’s basket ball team will open the 2001-02 season Friday against George Mason in a first round Preseason WNIT game. State’s net without much of a struggle. * “When you see someone who towers over every one in the box, including your UNC sophomore Maggie Tomecka converted a comer kick from Catherine Reddick for the game-winning goal. teammates, by four or five inches, it’s pretty intimidating,” Lear said. Forward Jena Kluegel and defender Catherine Reddick, who share comer kick duties for UNC, said they always look for Tomecka when they are lining up the ball on the sideline. Tar Heel coach Anson Dorrance called her a huge weapon. And the Tomecka tower turned out to be all UNC needed. Her goal was the game winner and savior for North Carolina after the team sunk into com placency and played a dismal second half. The Tar Heels consistently were able to rev up their engines in the midfield and move the ball into Wolfpack terri tory, but as UNC got closer to N.C. State’s box, its offense began to sputter. and students. A win against George Mason would put the Tar Heels in the tournament’s second round, hosting either Evansville or Temple on Sunday at 2 p.m. Nikki Teasley, the Tar Heels’ lone senior, will miss the George Mason con test while serving a one-game suspen sion for a violation of the NCAA’s out side competition rule. She will join North Carolina’s lineup for the second game of the season. N.C. State, on the other hand, did everything it could to avenge last Thursday’s 4-2 loss to UNC in Chapel Hill and steal North Carolina chance at a 13th-consecutive conference title. And even more importantly, winning a con ference tide was more than likely the Wolfpack’s only hope of making the NCAA Tournament this season. N.C. State (8-10, 0-8) stepped up its intensity and split possession fairly evenly with the higher skilled Tar Heels in the second half. But on 50-50 balls, more often than not, it was a red jersey that was first to scramble to the ball. “We’re all very skillful,” Kluegel said. “But if you don’t play with any intensi ty or any heart, it really doesn’t matter. “It’s frustrating. Our team needs to get on the same page. If we don’t play with any intensity or any heart, then we’re gonna lose. Then our season is over.” The Sports Editor cart be reached at , sports@unc.edu.
