Tar Heels' Troubles
Behind Arc Continue
By Rachel Carter

Jason Capel sunk a 3-pointer from
the top of the key with 2:12 left in
Friday’s North Carolina-Hampton
game to cut the Pirates’ lead to 67-55.
It was the only trey the senior for
ward made all night.
“I don’t think we relied on it,” said
UNC sophomore guard Brian
Morrison. “I think we were just open,
and we were taking them, and we were
missing them.”
Capel and Morrison shot a com
bined 3 of 19 from behind the arc, while
the team shot 6 of 34.
The Tar Heels will look to improve
their 3-point shooting against Davidson
at 7 p.m. today at the Smith Center.
“Again, we’ve struggled with this for
two games,” said UNC coach Matt
Doherty. “And I guess I’m going to have
to make some hard decisions on who
can shoot and who can’t and when we
can shoot and when we can’t because
they play the zone, and they give you
some open looks. If you make them,
great, if you don’t, then all of the sudden
you start getting tight.”
Doherty said Capel, who shot 1 of 9
behind the arc, might have struggled
because he was still finding his legs.
Capel missed North Carolina’s two
exhibition games because of a sore
hamstring and returned Friday for his
first game since the Blue White Game.
In the preseason contests, UNC shot 6
of 33 3-pointers against the EA Sports
All-Stars and 6 of 24 from behind the
arc against the Nike Elite.
In Friday’s game, the Pirates col
lapsed inside to keep the ball out of
6-foot-11 Kris Lang’s hands and forced
the Tar Heels to try to beat them on the
outside.
That, coupled with the Tar Heels’ dif
ficulty against Hampton’s 2-3 zone,
could spell trouble for the Tar Heels
again against Doherty’s former boss,
Davidson coach Bob McKillop.

North Carolina returns to action on

Men's Soccer Tourney Set
North Carolina is seeded seventh in
the NCAA Tournament and has a bye
in the first round.
The Tar Heels will face the winner of
the game between James Madison and
Towson in the second round on Sunday
afternoon at 1 p.m. at Fetzer Field.
The Dukes and the Tigers will meet
at Fetzer Field on Friday at 6 p.m.
“If I’m an opposing coach, I’m going to
play zone,” said Doherty of the Tar Heels’
future matchups. “If I’m Bob McKillop,
I’m playing zone. If I’m (Indiana coach)
Mike Davis, I’m playing zone until we
prove we can do a better job.”

Wideouts' Improvement Help UNC
Bv Ben DeSantis
Staff Writer
Kory Bailey said in August that
North Carolina’s wide receiver corps
was one of the nation’s best.
But after very little production in
losses to Oklahoma, Maryland and
Texas, UNC’s wide receivers had little
evidence to back up Bailey’s claims.
“We weren’t getting a lot of opportu
nities to make big plays,” Bailey said
Saturday after UNC topped Duke 52-17.
“But when we did, we weren’t really
getting it done."
But on Sept. 22 against Florida State,
Sam Aiken’s acrobatic first quarter
touchdown during the Tar Heels’ 41-9
was the beginning of the receivers’
resurgence.
After catching just two touchdown
passes in their first three losses, North
Carolina’s receivers have caught 22
touchdown passes in their last eight
games, including 18 by the starting trio
of Aiken, Bailey and Bosley Allen.
Saturday was the latest installment in
the Tar Heels’ receivers increased pro
duction. The three combined for four
touchdowns and 296 yards on 16 catch
es in UNC’s dismantling of Duke.
Aiken led the way, recording his sec
ond consecutive iOO-yard receiving
game. The junior caught seven passes
for a career-high 156 yards and two
touchdowns, including a 72-yard score
in the first quarter.
North Carolina coach John Bunting
said Aiken’s play has been instrumental
Game: Davidson at North Carolina
Time: 7 p.m.

Radio: 100.7 FM, WCHL-1360 AM
Television: FNSN
Series Record: UNC
Keys for UNC: Stop taking quick 3-pointers. In the
preseason and Hampton contests, the Tar Heels
showed that they aren't afraid to take an open 3.
Problem is, they aren't making them. In the first half
on Friday, UNC was 4 of 21 behind the arc. If the Tar
Heels can’t get the ball inside, their perimeter shooting
has to drastically improve for them to win games.
Keys for Davidson: Zone. As Friday's game proved,
North Carolina struggles when it can’t get the ball
inside to Kris Lang. Lang was 6 of 12 from the floor;
Hampton's ability to collapse inside really limited his
good touches.
UNC Bench: Off the bench, the Tar Heels need a big
rebounding performance from Will Johnson and
smarter shot selection from the freshmen. Down the
stretch Friday, Jackie Manuel had a key assist and used
his athletism to help keep UNC in the game.
Davidson Bench: The Davidson bench contributed
eight points all from Conor Grace in the
Wildcats' 65-51 loss to Charlotte. Sophomore Jouni
Eho missed all of his six shots off the bench.
Prediction: UNC 72, Davidson 67

in providing the spark needed for the
wide receivers to turn around their play.
“Sam is the guy that started all this,
way back when against Florida State,”
Bunting said. “He’s the one who got the
wide receivers going.”
Much of the wide receivers’ recent
success - Aiken’s, in particular - is in
large part because of the screen pass.
Bailey said the screen enables Aiken to
use his speed and moves to better devel
op a play.
“Right now, he has a swagger about
him,” Bailey said. “He’s going out there
and believing in himself and knowing
he can make those plays.”
UNC quarterback Darian Durant
said strength and conditioning coach
Jeff Connors’ offseason program has
given Aiken the ability to do things he
couldn’t do before.
“There’s no way if Sam would’ve
caught those balls last year that he
would be doing the things he’s doing
now,” Durant said.
Aiken agreed with his teammate, say
ing Connors’ program is a big reason
for his success this season. Aiken leads
the Tar Heels with 42 catches for 738
yards and eight touchdowns.
“It’s made me faster, quicker and
made me react to the ball more quickly,
especially if the ball’s in the air," Aiken
said. “It’s helped me out a lot.”
But as much as the wide receivers
have improved since the Oklahoma
game, they realize much work is left to
be done.
A Dec. 1 date against Southern
Methodist is all that stands between North
Carolina and a bowl game, and Bailey
said the receivers have to continue to pro
duce to make sure UNC is bowl-bound.
