Tar Heels Dealt 2nd Shocking Loss
North Carolina has dropped
its first two games of the
season for the first time
since an 0-2 start in 1982.

the first half, every UNC scholarship

58-54 loss in front of 14,705 at the Smith
Center. UNC’s three walk-ons did not
play.
After losing the season opener 77-69
to Hampton, UNC coach Matt Doherty
decided to mix things up and try differ
ent pieces to put the Tar Heels’ offensive
puzzle together.
“I went to a shorter, quicker lineup to
start the game because I wanted to
reward the guys who played good
defense against Hampton,” Doherty said.
Doherty started Jackie Manuel and
Melvin Scott against the Wildcats instead
of Brian Morrision andjawad Williams.
Scott, who did not score against
Hampton, benefitted from his increased
minutes, shooting 5 of 9 from the floor
for 15 points. Scott sparked North
Carolina’s comeback in the first half,
scoring eight points in one minute,
seven seconds to take a 25-23 lead.
The Wildcats (1-1) jumped out to an
early lead against the Tar Heels (0-2),
stretching their lead to 12 with 10:06
remaining -then Doherty subbed in four

UNC’s biggest problems - poor ball
handling and abysmal shooting.
The Tar Heels turned the ball over 14
times in the first half alone (20 overall)
and shot just 30 percent in the game.
North Carolina also failed to prove
that it could solve a zone defense, con
tinuing a trend from the Hampton loss.
“Our team doesn’t play a lot of zone,"
said Davidson coach Bob McKillop,
who gave Doherty his first coaching job
in 1989. “And we felt like we would stay
with it. Maybe I did that because I didn’t
want to wake up tomorrow and pick up
the paper and see, ‘That dummy
McKillop didn’t play them zone.’”
McKillop doesn’t have to worry
about that now, as his team was able to
hold off the Tar Heels’ down the stretch.
Capel tied the game at 54 with 0:55
left, but Davidson guard Michael Bree
drove through a sea of Tar Heels inside
and got the ball to forward Chris
Pearson, who slammed a dunk, giving
the Wildcats all they would need. Peter
Anderer sealed the victory by nailing
two free throws.
The Tar Heels have only opened
their season 0-2 twice before in their his

season 0-3, and in 1982. Doherty played

Women's Basketball Runs by
Western Carolina in Blowout
By James Giza
Sport Saturday Editor
Those in search of evidence that the North
Carolina women’s basketball team was having an
easy night Tuesday did not have to waste any ener
gy straining their necks to see the scoreboard.
In fact, they needed to look no further than the
woman running the point for the Tar Heels in the
waning minutes of the
second half.
It wasn’t Nikki
Teasley. She was on the
bench for the night with
15 points and three
assists. It wasn’t Coretta Brown (15, four), and it
wasn’t Leah Metcalf (10, eight), both of whom were
in the same spot as Teasley.
It was sophomore guard Courtney Chambers,
who had never played the point for North Carolina
before and entered the game with 13 assists for her
career.
But anything went in North Carolina’s 100-44
win against Western Carolina in front of 945 at

double figures, while the team shot nearly 54 per
cent from the field (including 47 percent from
behind the arc) and stole the ball 16 times, com
tributing to 29 Catamount turnovers.
“We’re running a lot of different things cttY
defense and on offense, trying to throw some teams
off," Teasley said. “But on the defensive aspect,
sometimes we throw ourselves off because we’re
doing a lot of stuff. So we’re trying to work on it and
be consistent. And a game like this is where we try
to execute and get into habits.”
The offense seems to have formed some good
ones already. Although several open layups didn’t
find the bottom of the net, for the most part the Tar
Heels’ transition game looked polished, as they
converted easy baskets off Western Carolina
turnovers and defensive rebounds.
“I told them yesterday in practice our goal for
the next week is to play team defense better,” UNC
coach Sylvia Hatchell said. “And then also, offen
sively, get our timing down because our timing has
n’t been as good as it needs to be.”

Scott 'Steps Up' for UNC,
Leads Team in Scoring
By Mike Ogle
Senior Writer
Melvin Scott needed a little pat on
the back after Friday’s loss to Hampton.
Not because North Carolina dropped
its home opener, but because the fresh
man’s debut performance shook his
confidence a bit
His team sensed his frustration, dis
agreed with its roots and gave him a shove
in the back - into the starting lineup.
Scott started in Tuesday’s 58-54 loss to
Davidson at the Smith Center, played the
second most minutes on the team and led
the Tar Heels in scoring with 15 points.
“My teammates after the first loss
were like ‘C’mon Melvin, just step up,’"
Scott said. “They made me feel comfort
able, so I stepped in and hit big shots."
He did early, shedding the gun-shy
mentality he adopted Friday after missing
everything but the glass on his only shot
Scott drained a 3-pointer on the left
wing 28 seconds into Tuesday’s contest
for a UNC lead, something the Tar
Heels didn’t experience most of the rest
of the night. He nailed three of his four
first-half field goal attempts, all 3-point
ers, for 11 points and quickly put the
brick he threw up Friday behind him.
“That first shot, I was just so tense;
that’s why I missed it,” Scott said.
“Tonight, I was just relaxed. When you
start a game, you feel at ease, you get
going early as opposed to coming off
the bench.
“Coach (Matt Doherty) jtold me not to
go out and be Superman or do anything
I wouldn’t normally do. Just go out,
relax and if I get a good look, take it”
Scott said Doherty told him he would
start while the team watched film
Sunday because he was impressed with
Scott’s defense.
He didn’t disappoint, once again
frustrating opponents and helping cause
multiple turnovers.

“He looked very comfortable out
there,” Doherty said. “He handled the
ball very well out there. He’s our best
on-the-ball defender, and he shot the
ball very well for us tonight So he cer
tainly was one of a few bright spots.”
Scott started in an altered lineup with
guard Adam Boone, fellow freshman
Jackie Manuel, Jason Capel and Kris
Lang, but by the end of the night he had
distinguished himself from Boone, who
started at point guard in the first game.
Doherty had Scott on the floor in
crunch time, directing his team and
sparking its defense as UNC tried to
claw its way to a win and avoid an 0-2
start against relative nobodies.
Scott wasn’t enough, though, as
Doherty struggled to come up with a
guard combination he liked. Boone had
two points and two assists. Brian
Morrison, who lost his starting spot to
Scott, turned the ball over five times in
nine minutes. Jonathan Holmes, who
did not play Friday, saw nine minutes
and netted two points and three assists.
On a team searching for answers,
Scott could figure prominendy into the
immediate future based on Tuesday.
“He showed a lot of poise,” Capel
said. “He was steady. He played well
defensively. That was the main reason he
was out there. He did a good job. We all
have to go out there and do a good job.”
