4 Thursday, January 17, 2002 Wrestling Overcomes Slow Start, Tops State By Owen A. Hassell Senior Writer His team down 3-0, North Carolina’s Matt Kenny had seen enough stalling. So Kenny broke free of N.C. State’s Ngozi Collins and tripped him up for a takedown. It was enough to award Kenny a decision in the heavyweight match and tie the overall score. And after Kenny’s victo ry, the Tar Wrestling N.C. State 9 UNC 21 Heels wasted little time disposing of the Wolfpack. North Carolina cruised with five con secutive decisions en route to a 21-9 win against the Wolfpack on Wednesday night at Carmichael Auditorium. “Last weekend we went to Virginia Duals and just mopped up,” Kenny said. “We were really tough. I thought com ing in that we would really kick their butt.” N.C. State was picked as the ACC preseason favorite, and North Carolina (4-2, 1-0 in the ACC), a perennial con ference champion, was picked third. In addition, the winning team has won by four points or less in the last five match- Call for Papers "Dialogues on the Diaspora” The Institute of African American Research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites submissions of papers for its Bth Annual Student Academic Conference. The match began with the 197-pound bout between UNC’s Dustin Heist and the Wolfpack’s Jason Gore. Gore was penalized for fleeing the mat late in the third period to tie it at 3-3 but scored a takedown and held on for a 5-4 victory. UNC coach Bill Lam said he put Heist in a tough position because starter Austin Wall, still nursing an injury, missed Wednesday’s match. “I put a lot on Dustin because Austin is just not back in shape yet,” Lam said. “But I was proud of Dustin’s effort.” State gained two three-point deci sions afterward to put the match at 18-9, but the Wolfpack would win no more. UNC’s Nick Richmond won at 184 pounds against the Wolfpack’s Jon Godwin to put the final mark at 21-9. Like Kenny, Lam said the Virginia Duals tournament was a good building block for the Tar Heels. “I think a lot of things started at Virginia Duals,” Lam said. “They are coming together as a team, they’re work ing hard and starting to believe in them selves. I think they learned a lot tonight, and we will be even tougher next time.” The Sports Editor can be reached at sports@unc.edu. UNC Swimmers Ace Ivy League Test The Tar Heel swimming and diving teams had little difficulty besting Brown in a non-conference clash. By Jamie Agin Assistant Sports Editor Rhode Island to North Carolina is a long way to go for an exhibition meet. Meanwhile, the UNC women built on Sunday’s victory over the Tigers, defeating the Bears 169-129. Yuri Suguiyama and Michael Chenier also notched individual victories for the men’s team, which evened its season record to 3-3 and rebounded from last Sunday’s home loss to Clemson. “I feel better about how the team per formed,” said Quinn, winner of the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes. “I executed a few small things today that I wasn’t able to do Sunday. Coach always points out there’s a few small things that I am lacking right now, but they’ll come with time.” On the women’s side, Becky Acker led the Tar Heels (5-1) with victories in Kn f Thu., Jan. 17,9-11:30pm $1.50 domestic bottles $2.50 high balls and Holy Grail Specials Med, Dental, Nursing, Pharmacy, Business, Law Schools, Sports Smior diver en Krebs won the 1- and 3-meter springboard events Wednesday against Brown. the 100- and 200- yard breaststrokes and the 400-yard individual medley. Lindsay Waddell and Jessi Perruquet had two wins apiece. Acker down played her three victories after the meet, pointing to the absence of UNC senior Katie Hathaway as a reason for her suc cess. “I swam better than I did on Sunday, but I think I won the events because (Hathaway) wasn’t here,” Acker said. “That’s good because she’s not going to be here next year, so maybe it shows Kudzu I PRENATAL ( YES, THEY TEST f OURS TESTEP IN SSfF ZIZTDZZZDZ G.A.T.'S? UNC swam sev eral of the later races as exhibition heats. “Brown is here to make us better,” Acker said. “Like our coach said, we don’t want to rub anything in their face.” Said Quinn: “Usually against Brown it’s always a fun meet, and they always swim really well for us. But I think we kind of came in today with a really dif ferent focus, to try to get tuned up for Saturday against Virginia.” The Tar Heels will need to be ready for the Cavaliers. Both the UVa. men’s and women’s teams are undefeated in the ACC, not to mention the Cavaliers are UNC’s main conference rivals. “As far as dual meets go, I’d have to 31 Dispatch boat 34 Ballplayer Guerrero 35 Omit in pronun ciation 36 Tumbler 38 Sledgehammer 39 Slangy okay 41 "...like a of jelly” 42 Doug of "The 6 Tips 7 Boorish 8 Tucked in for the night 9 Spasm 10 Grown acorn 11 Aboveboard 12 Pirouette 13 Packed 18 Emerald Isle 22 Man's address 23 Mystery award 24 Andrea, the dictator of Genoa 25 Watchman 26 Stately bird 27 Oversupply 29 Gown or sack 30 Creepy ■ n 11 ? nr~ "l 6 79 34 35 36 III 49 ■■so 51 p| 53 55 56 57 58 59 : " ■■■7' || - HB' Winter Specials mehteke* Discount Mufflers and Brakes 407 E. It’s an exciting meet and we’re looking forward to it.” Perhaps the meet against Virginia will feature some of the excitement lacking in Wednesday’s races. In the men’s 200- meter breaststroke, Quinn coasted past three swimmers from Brown (2-2), beat ing the second-place finisher by over eight seconds and drawing exasperation from a Brown parent. “They just came off a hard training trip to Sarasota,” he quipped.
