QJljr Daily (Ear Hrrl UNC Rolls to 3rd Straight Win By lan Gordon Sports Editor ' ■ i ii ' i.r.11 • Following the first half of the North Carolina women’s basketball team’s game against Florida State, two teams made of a random mix of UNC coaches and profes sors rushed onto the Carmichael Auditorium floor. Their call ing? To play a game based on Dr. James Women’s Basketball Florida State 63 UNC 93 Naismith’s original, and long since changed, rules for the sport. And that’s what they did. But most notable about the discombobulated, unconventional and basically ugly show ing at the break was its eerie resemblance to Florida State’s first-half performance. On the strength of an early 25-2 run and the guard combination of Nikki Teasley and Coretta Brown, the No. 24 Tar Heels cruised to a 93-63 win Monday. UNC has won three straight after losing Tar Heel Pressure Cooks Seminoles By Owen A. Hassell Senior Writer Sylvia Hatchell’s intensity drills in practice paid off for the North Carolina women’s basketball team Monday night against Florida State. Leading 12-9 after the first five min utes of the game, the Tar Heels opted to employ their practice drill by pressing the Seminoles. The pressure sparked a 25-2 run, and by the time FSU was able to break the traps, UNC had expanded its lead to 37-11, with 7:51 left in the first half. “Maybe we’ve come up with a secret weapon, I’m not sure,” said UNC coach Sylvia Hatchell after the Tar Heels defeated the Seminoles 93-63 at Carmichael Auditorium. North Carolina forward Jennifer Thomas, who scored 12 points and had nine rebounds, attributed the 25-2 run to the team’s defensive energy. “I think we picked up our intensity on defense,” she said. “When we are solid on defense, it helps out our offense, and that’s the way it should be. We just turned it up another level.” The extra level of pressure was good enough to force 15 first-half turnovers by the Seminoles. And although Florida State regrouped and had only four turnovers in the second half, UNC had already gained a decisive lead and was well on its way to claiming its third straight win. But Hatchell said it was a combina tion of 3-pointers and inside scoring that also came up big against the Seminoles. “We had a couple of good traps, and they panicked a litde bit,” she said. “But we also made a couple of 3-pointers, and it was just a variation of a lot of things." With each UNC basket during its 25- 2 run, the Tar Heels quickly switched to a full-court, man-to-man defense. When the Seminoles got the ball inbounds, the press would loosen slightly before con tinuing with a trap of a Florida State ballhandler. In UNC’s first two uses of the press, the Seminoles were forced into sloppy ballhandling and two turnovers. The second turnover, an out-of-bounds call Slip Daily ear Uppl | For Rent | For Rent \ Great Location. Rosemary St., Bank of America Building, near Molly's four of its previous five games. “Carolina did a great job of jumping on us early,” said FSU coach Sue Semrau. “Teasley was, I think, the best I’ve seen her all year." North Carolina (17-6,7-4 in the ACC) started the game with a pressure defense that caused fits for FSU (11 -11,2-9). The Tar Heels went to a full-court man press out of the first official timeout at 15:46, and the Seminoles went into their shells. And by the time Brown took a Teasley cross-court pass and nailed a wide-open, right-wing 3-pointer, UNC was up 30-11 with 9:54 to go in the first half. FSU coach Sue Semrau called a 30- second timeout, but the damage already had been done. The Seminoles commit ted 15 turnovers in the half. Throughout the rest of the game, the Tar Heels continued to drain shots with uncharacteristic consistency, connecting on a season-high 54.8 percent. They also assisted on 21 of 34 baskets, with Teasley tallying nine dimes against one turnover. As she has been throughout the Tar on Florida State guard Petra Hofmann, resulted in the lone field goal of the game for reserve forward Kenya Mcßee. The Tar Heels had 12 steals in the game, with guard Leah Metcalf leading the way with five. Nikki Teasley and Nikita Bell both had two steals apiece. The junior guard scored 18 points on 7-of-12 shoot ing, including 4 of 9 from behind the arc. “It makes it a lot easier on me when I can pass to someone who can finish,” Teasley said. But Teasley also got into the act Monday night. She beat FSU guard April Traylor time and time again, free ing herself for drives or long-range bombs. Her five treys tied a season-high, and she finished with a game-high 22. Perhaps the most encouraging part of the Tar Heels’ blowout win was their balance, particularly in the frontcourt. Jennifer Thomas and Candace Sutton each totaled 12 points, and Thomas grabbed nine rebounds. “She’s playing defense and she’s box ing out,” said UNC coach Sylvia Hatchell of Thomas. “She gives us some experience that setdes us a litde bit.” The Sports Editor can be reached at sports@unc.edu. “We didn’t get an opportunity to get the rhythm we wanted,” said Florida State coach Sue Semrau. “We just real ly struggled to get any kind of rhythm.” The Sports Editor can be reached at sports@unc.edu.
