till)? Gaily (Tar Heel Tar Heels Shut Out VSC in Season Finale By Tim Candon Assistant Sports Editor Heading into the 14th-ranked North Carolina men’s soccer team’s match against No. 23 South Carolina on Friday, UNC midfielder Marcus Storey had one goal in mind - score. “My coaches asked me before the game, ‘What are you going to do for the game?’ I was like, ‘Try to score some Men’s Soccer South Carolina .. .0 UNC 2 goals,’” Storey said with a chuckle. Although he didn’t score some goals, he did score one, which proved to be the game winner in Friday’s 2-0 win against South Carolina (10-7-1). In the 38th minute, UNC forward David Testo col lected a failed clearing attempt by the Gamecock defense about 35 yards from goal. He backheeled a pass to Ryan Kneipper, who then slipped a pass through the South Carolina backline to the wide-open Storey. One-on-one against USC goalkeeper Michael Bachmeyer, Storey deposited his shot into the back of the net. “Really the ball just bounced, and I happened to be in the right place at the right time. I saw the goalie coming out, and I just tried to put it under him.” But before Storey’s goal, the first half was full of missed opportunities for both teams. In the 19th minute, Bachmeyer bare ly got a finger on a Testo strike from 12 yards out. Three minutes later, Matt Crawford drilled the crossbar. Three minutes after that, USC for ward Ryan Deter’s shot from 6 yards out hit the post. wnraai Jumps tart Get a head start on planning your career and finding an internship by attending Career Jump Start, a program designed especially for FRESHMEN AND SOPHOMORES. In the 33rd minute, UNC defender David Stokes cleared a ball off the line that had beaten Williams. But when Storey’s shot hit the back of the net shortly thereafter, UNC coach Elmar Bolowich said the score boosted his team’s morale. “It was against the run of play. At UNC midfielder Marcus Storey scored his eighth goal of the season against South Carolina on Friday night. the time, it was like South Carolina hit the post, we had a ball cleared off the line, and boom - there we go on the other end and stick it in. And I think it shocked South Carolina a little bit, but it also gave us a little bit more confidence.” But in the second half the offensive push for both sides dwindled. USC played with more urgency to make up the one-goal deficit. Although it appeared that UNC (13- 5-1,3-2-1 in the ACC) was trying to pre serve the lead by attacking less, Bolowich said it was just the opposite. “We wanted to not protect the lead. We wanted to go for more goals,” he said. “We wanted to press South Carolina. It’s just like they made it very difficult for us.” Bolowich said he remained uneasy about how the game would end until a USC own goal in the 86th minute sealed the win for the Tar Heels. With the ACC Tournament begin ning Thursday, UNC forward Mike Gell said winning the regular-season finale was huge for the Tar Heels. “It was unbelievably huge,” he said. “Just to get the win, keep that ball rolling, hopefully we won’t lose another one.” The Sports Editor can be reached at sports@unc.edu. UNC Avenges Loss to EA All-Stars By lan Gordon Senior Writer Melvin Scott backpedaled down the court, looked up at the 12,574 Smith Center fans and slowly broke out a smile. As the crowd noise grew, the sopho more guard’s grin broadened and his head began to bob up and down. And right there, with 12 min utes to go in Men's Basketball EA All-Stars 97 UNC 109 the North Carolina men’s basketball team’s game against the EA Sports All- Stars, Scott began his own little victory dance, shimmying his shoulders and hips to a beat only he could hear. “When I was doing that, I was just thinking, ‘Man, this is what I dreamed Carolina being like,’” Scott said. “I mean, it’s only an exhibition, but it felt good - the team chemistry, the crowd supporting us.” Saturday evening, that dream began to be realized. In front of an energized and eager Smith Center audience, the Tar Heels ran an offensive clinic in their first pre season game to top EA Sports 109-97. UNC swing man Rashad McCants and for ward Jawad Williams each 1 UNC point guard Raymond Felton had 16 points and nine assists in Saturday's game with the EA All-Stars. dropped 23 points on the All-Stars, the troupe of former college players that shocked Chapel Hill when it walloped the Tar Heels 107-76 last year. Sure, a different group of players filled EA Sports’ roster this time around, but UNC’s victory still came as a relief to a fan base yearning for a quick start. “It’s nice to win a basketball game,” Sports said UNC coach Matt Doherty, “Granted, it’s an exhibition game, but I liked the way our kids played.” Although the game’s outcome was essentially set by the time Scott started breaking it down, the All-Stars came out bombing from behind the 3-point line early and built a 27-18 first-half lead. Mike Elliott led the charge, draining four treys en route to 18 first-half points. But the Tar Heels took the hit and fought back. They went on a 23-6 run to take the lead for the rest of the way.
