(Thp iaily U>ar Mrrl Tar Heel duo qualifies for NCAAs Bumpers, Wilson to compete in Lincoln BY BRIAN MacPHERSON ASSISTANT SPORTS EDITOR ATHENS, Ga. - They could have been done weeks ago. When freshman Courtney Bumpers severely injured her ankle on a balance beam dismount at Towson on March 11, North Carolina gymnastics coach Derek Galvin wasn’t sure if the all arounder would be able to com pete in postseason meets at all. When junior Anna Wilson tried out anew floor exercise skill in practice and turned her ankle on March 26, the same fear resurfaced for the longtime Tar Heel coach. And even when Wilson and Bumpers were pronounced fit to compete, Galvin didn’t expect to see the same dynamic skills that the duo had executed all season. “With Courtney coming off an ankle injury and Anna coming off an ankle injury, what I wanted for both of them was just to have a real ly good meet so they could end the year on a positive note," Galvin said. Mission accomplished. Bumpers and Wilson had such a good meet in Saturday’s NCAA Southeast Regional, in fact, that they each qualified as individual all-around competitors to the NCAA Tournament in Lincoln, Neb. They will be North Carolina’s first representatives at the tourna ment since 1986. Performing on two taped ankles. Bumpers ignored any pain and exe cuted several outstanding routines. Her floor exercise routine earned her a score of 9-875, good for third in the meet, and her balance beam performance earned her a 9-90. MEN'S GOLF FROM PAGE 16 claim a tie for third-place in the final individual competition standings. Senior Ramon Bescansa and freshman Kevin Silva each shot 1 under par. By the end of the second round, the superb play of Treis, Bescansa and Silva bad propelled the Tar Heels into first place. However, with the exception of Silva’s 3-under 68, the Tar Heels faltered in the final round, shoot ing a 3-over-par 287. “Gosh, horrible,” said Bray of his 19th place finish. “It’s been a rough last couple weeks.” In spite of the disappointing fin ish, expectations are high for Bray, Liinnna Take 15/501 South towards Pittsboro Exit Main St./Southern Village BRINGING DOWN THE HOUSE BBS 1:30-(4:00)-7:05-9:25 THE CORE EEBi 1:00-(4:05)-7:00-9:50 ANGER MANAGEMENTE3S 1:45-(4:15)-7:15-9:40 WHAT A GIRL WANTS ICS) 1:15-(3:45)-7:10-9:30 Matinees nniocAßvi stapi.." Only extra steps at the end of her floor exercise passes betrayed the pain her smile never let show. With a skill level that could set them apart. Bumpers and Wilson have managed to fit perfectly in North Carolina’s team-first culture. “(Wilson) is the most positive competitor on our team," Bumpers said. “She’s the person who, even when you have a bad meet, or a bad event, she’s like, “You can do it. You have another event left, work hard,’ and every time she motivates me to do well.” Other teammates feed off that passion. “Aside from their skill level, (Bumpers and Wilson) have a lot of energy and a lot of enthusiasm,” said senior Natalie Halbach. “And that comes through both in their work ethic in the gym and in the fierceness that they compete with.” That work ethic Wilson already was studying film of her routine on the bus ride back to Chapel Hill —and enthusiastic teammate support helped the gym nasts return to competition soon er than Galvin could have expected. And they’re not done yet. Contact the Sports Editor at sports@unc.edu. the defending ACC champion, and UNC as it heads into next week end’s ACC Tournament. GYMNASTICS FROM PAGE 16 back to the gathered team, clutch ing her hand excitedly, judges announced a score 0f9.825. Courtney Bumpers, a unani mous first-team vaulter in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League, com pleted the rotation with a strong performance, but when the judges announced a score of 9.825, the team score had fallen short by the most miniscule of margins. Despite the narrow defeat, though, No. 27 North Carolina was proud of its performance after upsetting No. 16 Ohio State (193.650) and No. 24 N.C. State (193.575), as well as coming with in a pointed toe or bent leg of knocking off No. 9 Florida. “I was delighted for the team that we had a performance eis a team where they all can walk out of here knowing that they had a great meet,” Galvin said. “These girls showed so much heart and tremendous focus on the task that we had ahead of us.” Wilson said that making the meet enjoyable was a crucial factor. “We do great when we have fun, and we have fun when we do great,” she said. “It works both ways.” The Tar Heels opened the meet on uneven bars, but left with dis appointingly low scores. Trusty led the team with a score of 9-725. The near-miss provides the team with anew motivator for next sea son, as the NCAA Tournament ceased to be a distant dream and became an attainable goal. “I don’t think I have to do any thing to inspire this team,” Galvin said. “They’re already inspired. They inspire each other every day in practice, and in competition, and that’s what’s made them such an exceptional group of student athletes.” Right after the competition Saturday, though, raw emotion still dominated the atmosphere. “It was a big mixture,” Halbach said of her feelings. “Sadness, and a thrill that we had come so close and really proved that we were a team to contend with— and will be for the future.” Contact the Sports Editor at sports@unc.edu.
