The formal vote will occur at the ASG’s May meeting. Ducote will become the third ASG president in six years to serve two terms. After being elected last year, Ducote pledged to raise the volume of the student voice on UNC-sys tem and state issues. “Thank you for allowing me to continue fighting for students,” Ducote said upon his second nom ination. “We’re going to hit the ground running in May this year, not September.” got guts? Franklin Street 942-6875 Victor Landry, vice president of legislative affairs, was nominated as Ducote’s senior vice president. Ducote, continuing his advoca cy of a stronger student voice, said student leaders need to fight the N.C. House’s most recent appro priations bill, which might include a 5 percent systemwide tuition increase. “We’re going to have a lot of work to do if we don’t want a tuition increase,” Ducote said. “It’s now very real that they’re going to use tuition increases to fund the state budget. “Something’s going to happen in the future, and (students) have got to do something to stop it.” Ducote said that with this pro posed increase, the N.C. General Assembly blatantly ignored the UNC-system Board of Governors’ decision to freeze tuition increases. “The 5 percent tuition increase was slapped in (the BOG’s) face,” he said. “We are going to have to News “Were go ing to have a lot of work to do if we don’t want a tuition increase.” JONATHAN DUCOTE, ASG PRESIDENT fight that. Students can’t afford a 5 per cent increase they can’t afford a 1 per cent increase. “Now we’re going straight to the decision makers, and it’s not going to be an easy fight.” Landry said the ASG needs to protect classrooms and teacher-to student ratios from budget cuts. “Each campus needs to start a dialogue with their vice president of finance and provost,” he said. BOG backs Easley s tax plan STAFF REPORT The UNC-system Board of Governors passed Friday a resolu tion supporting Gov. Mike Easley’s tax freeze, which would eliminate the necessity of additional cuts to the system and a possible tuition increase. The board unanimously sup ported a two-year delay of state sales tax and income tax reduc tions slated to take effect in July. The associa tion also dis cussed a bill going through the House that would allow a student vote on the BOG. The bill would allow the ASG president to vote on board resolutions and actions. Ducote now holds a nonvoting position on the board. Similar bills have gotten through the House in the past but The board stated in a Friday press release that the elimination of these taxes would be detrimen tal to the UNC system. The press release also states that reducing these taxes this year would require an additional $56.7 million cut to the system’s budget and eliminate about 1,550 positions including 650 faculty positions while also cutting S6O million from non-personnel expenditures. /m Owe Check Covers it All! Also at the meeting, Sadie Cox, vice president of student affairs, said her committee will complete a survey about streamlining transfer credits by the fall. After the transfer credit issue is resolved, Cox said, her committee would like to install a program that would allow students to spend time anywhere from a day to a year at other system schools. Contact the State & National Editor at stntdesk@unc.edu. Easley’s budget proposed $836 million in cuts, including $82.5 million to the UNC system. His budget did not include a tuition increase.
