10 WEDNESDAY, APRIL 16, 2003 ON THE DAY S NEWS ll ir :'sc*t swwpwK!, 1 Members of The Daily Tar Heel Editorial Board are proud to welcome men’s basketball coach Roy Williams back to UNC. We wish him and the team the best of luck for next season. EDITORS' NOTE: The above editorials are the opinions of solely The Daily Tar Heei Editorial Board, which were reached after open debate. The board consists of eight board members, the assistant editorial page editor, the editorial page editor and the DTH editor. The 2002-03 DTH editor decided not to vote on the board and not to write board editorials. READERS’ FORUM Alumnus notes desire for a new basketball game chant TO THE EDITOR: Now that Roy is back running the show, it’s time for the Tar Heel fans to come up with a chant as a salute to our Jayhawk friends. No, we won’t chant “Rock, Chalk, Jayhawk,” but I suggest the new Carolina chant be: “Real, Deal, Tar Heel!” Gary Schaber Class of 1971 Snagging Williams shouldn't divert focus from Baddour TO THE EDITOR: Like every other Carolina fan, I was ecstatic all afternoon just knowing who the new men’s bas ketball coach was going to be. There’s not a better man for the job than Roy Williams. Congratulations (Director of Athletics) Dick Baddour, you’ve done something right for a change and saved your job. Or have you? Let us not forget the way Baddour handled the Matt Doherty situation and the scrutiny he was under while there was no coach allowing the players and their families to control the situa tion, a forced resignation and just no class at all. This is not what the Carolina tradition is all about. “I came back because I thought it was the right thing to do” ROY WILLIAMS, MEN'S BASKETBALL COACH I fear that Baddour will no longer be under (criticism) for his poor decisions as the athletics director. This makes the second time Baddour will have covered his tracks by hiring a miracle man at the helm of a varsity sports team. Anyone remember Carl Torbush? Jon Bolding Senior Chemistry UK student wishes Williams, UNC success despite switch TO THE EDITOR: I want to wish you congratula tions on getting Roy Williams. I hope you can treat him the same way the Jayhawk fans have the past 15 years. With no athletic director and now the loss of a hall of fame coach, our school is in a state of disarray. From all at the University of Kansas, we wish you and especial ly Roy the best. Mike Glaser Student Kansas University Kansas student angered at Williams' return to UNC TO THE EDITOR: Tar Heels, now that you have been awarded the honor of having men’s basketball coach Roy Editorial Page Williams come to your University, I hope you treat him like you did former men’s basketball coach Matt Doherty. I would like nothing more than for Coach Williams to come back here to Kansas. Coach Williams belongs at Kansas. Now that he is gone, I pray for our basketball pro gram. My question to you is, Will you love him and forgive without hesi tation like we do? Because you have without a doubt the best men’s division bas ketball coach at your University. Be good to him, because you do not deserve him. David Curry Student Kansas University Williams' arrival is salvation needed by the University TO THE EDITOR: Think of the millions of the peo ple in the world who are confused they plan to celebrate the resur rection of the Messiah next Sunday. But he actually arrived last Monday, thank goodness. Now everyone in Chapel Hill and the rest of North Carolina can continue their lives in peace. Go Heels! Gene Moore Melbourne, Fla. Power struggle has divided UNC's College Republicans TO THE EDITOR: To many, the word “Republican” is synonymous with cold-hearted racism, sexism and homophobia. Unfortunately, these stereotypes apply to a small faction of the UNC College Republicans. A band of deceitful and manip ulative members have succeeded in dividing the club and alienating many of the conservative groups on campus. Rather than sitting around whining about how con servatives at UNC are marginal ized by a liberal campus and com munity, it is time to take action. The first step in doing this is electing quality leadership within the club. It is essential that dedi cated, moral leaders, who have the well-being of the conservative community rather than them selves, are leading the club. These new leaders must be uniters and not dividers. In their latest escapade, four members of the Executive Board, under the influence of Brent Tanner, Alak Shah, Richard Wernick and Michael McKnight, attempted to make unconstitution al changes to the club election laws in an effort to steal the election. The only member of the Executive Board who opposed these last-minute election maneu vers was Chairwoman Allie Perry. The actions that they have attempted to set in motion would disenfranchise the majority of club members from voting and ensure victory for themselves. These strong-arm tactics cannot be allowed. New leadership must be fairly elected, and everyone must be allowed to participate in this election. New leadership also will pro mote better relations with other student organizations and the community I urge all UNC conservatives to band together. Now is the time to unite the conservative community. It is essential for all CRs and all those interested to participate in the upcoming election today at 7:45 p.m. in 226 Student Union. Dues can be paid at the door and are $5 when presented with a stu dent ID. It’s time for a change.
