Foreign-bom population in N.C. increases

The number of foreign-born
residents continues to increase in
Orange County and in North
Carolina, sustaining a multicultur
al influx that began in the 19905.
The American Community
Survey, released Wednesday by the
U.S. Census Bureau, ranks North
Carolina 24th in the nation with 6
percent foreign-bom residents, up
from less than 2 percent in 1990.
While the proportion of foreign
bom residents increased to 10.8
percent in the Triangle, Orange
County failed to crack the top 200
counties nationwide.
The ACS differs from the U.S.
Census Survey, which is conducted
every decade, because it uses a
much smaller sampling base.
Guild’s festival showcases
student films, hard work

In February, the dedicated stu
dent filmmakers of the Carolina
Production Guild were just break
ing ground on anew project.
Tonight, the CPG Fall Film
Festival allows the public to view
the fruits of their labor.
The festival marks the premiere
of two films, as well as a short to
be announced at the event.
The featured film, “Melencolia,”
concerns a freshman who comes to
terms with her own identity while
completing an art project.
“Expiration Date,” a murder mys
tery, will be shown afterward.
The movies are the culmination
of almost a year’s worth of blood,
sweat and tears.
“It was hectic,” said CPG
Co-president Chris Cianci. “Trying
to make a film while taking class
es is not easy. I edited most of the
film over the summer.”
Formed in 1993, the guild cites
as one of its key attributes the fact
that it goes beyond merely the sto
rytelling aspect of moviemaking

The recently published report
surveyed about 742,000 house
holds to estimate the number of
foreign-born residents in larger
city and state communities.
In this survey, gateway states for
immigration such as California,
New York and Florida ranked the
highest in proportions of foreign
bom residents. Miami-Dade
County and its biggest city, Miami,
were ranked highest in their respec
tive categories.
Bob Coats, the governor’s census
liaison for North Carolina, said
these findings are accurate but
only reflect larger cities. “It was
only started on some target areas,”
he said. “It’s easier to get a workable
sample size in larger areas when
you’re trying to get 15 percent.”

Student Congress," Wilson said.

and directed “Melencolia,” a
SI,OOO grant to finance the film.
Wilson said that the guild will
award another grant this semester
and that people interested in any
aspect of filmmaking should
attend the festival.

Lockamy knows the value of a few
hours, having already worked on
many films.
“One day we had to shoot a
scene at the Open Eye Cafe in
Carrboro,” Lockamy recalled. “But
we had to go in at 5 a.m., for four
hours before it opened, just to
shoot a couple scenes.”
That dedication is why those
involved in the making of these
films are anxious for the public to
see the finished product before
starting the process all over again.
“I’m only a sophomore,” Cianci
said.
“I hope to make a film every year
until I’m out.”
