Game and time: Syracuse at North Carolina.
Kickoff is at 1:30 p.m.
Site: Kenan Stadium
TV/Radio: No television. The Tar Heel Sports
Network will provide live radio coverage; its flag
ship station is WCHL 1360-AM.
Records: Syracuse is O-O. North Carolina is 0-1.
Series: UNC leads 2-1.
Personnel update: Syracuse - none reported.
UNC - RB Chad Scott, left thigh bruise (out); TE
Justin Philips, right shoulder separation (out).
The key matchup: UNC’s resilience versus
Syracuse’s rust.
Whether they make it a motto or put it out of
their minds, the Tar Heels need to respond to last
Saturday’s blowout loss. Week Two is a bit early
for the term ‘must win,’ but the Tar Heels play
road games at Wisconsin and N.C. State in the
next two weeks. Does ‘can’t lose’ do it for you?
The good news for UNC is the Syracuse defense
isn’t as tough as FSU’s. The Orangemen gave up
33.8 points and 478 yards per game last year, then
suffered significant losses in the off-season.
Gone are the 228 tackles of Clifton Smith and
Jameel Dumas at linebacker. Gone are all but one
of the players from the secondary. The returnee,
sophomore Steve Gregory, is a key one.
Gregory broke up 21 passes and made two
interceptions last year. He could shut down UNC
receiver Jarwarski Pollock, meaning quarterback
Darian Durant may have to spread the wealth hke
he did during last year’s 30-22 win when he con
nected with 10 different receivers.
“We’ve got to go deep and make plays on ‘em
just like we did last year,” Pollock said.

The Bottom Line UNC 28, Syracuse 24
COMPILED BY JAMIE AGIN
UNC coach John Bunting labeled the
Orangemen a pressing team but said because of
the inexperience of the secondary, it remains to
be seen how much they will blitz.
Should the defensive line have to go it alone, it
might have success behind senior defensive tackle
Louis Gachelin, who had 8.5 sacks and 17 tackles
for loss last year. To its credit, the UNC offensive
fine held up well last week, allowing just one sack.
On offense, like Florida State, the Orangemen
have several talented ground options. Their prima
ry ball carrier is junior Walter Reyes, who rushed
for 17 touchdowns last year. Reyes is complement
ed by speedy sophomore Damien Rhodes, who tal-

bed 568 yards and seven TDs as a freshman.
“They run the ball,” Bunting said of Syracuse.
“And obviously that has been deficient on our
defense, and we need to get better and we need to
get better right away to have a chance to win.”
As for the other skill positions, the Orangemen
thought they had lost their top two receivers from
last year. One of them,Jamel Riddle, was dis
missed from school for academic reasons but
recendy reinstated. If he plays Saturday, it could
be a huge boost for Syracuse on offense and spe
cial teams. If he doesn’t, Johnnie Morant and
Jared Jones will try to fill his role.
At quarterback, R.J. Anderson was benched
last year in favor of senior Troy Nunes and need
ed a great spring to retake the starting job.
Bunting described him as athletic, but don’t
expect Donovan McNabb.
Final analysis/prediction: “I remember
growing up as a kid watching thejim Browns, the
Ernie Davises and just marveling at Syracuse foot
ball,” Bunting said.
This isn’t one of the teams he remembers. The
years of consistency and bowl berths went out the
window last year with a 4-8 season. It’s doubtful the
2003 Orangemen will exit the gate world-beaters.
In the end, both offenses match up well with
the other team’s defensive weaknesses, and the
game may well turn into a shootout. The defini
tive edge goes to Tar Heels for the extra game to
get the kinks out and for the home field advantage
- assuming everyone stays in their seats this time.
