As part of Honor and Integrity Week, this month’s “Tuesdays with Friday: A Carolina Community Conversation” featured Morton lecturing on his work. Morton has photographed decades of UNC-CH basketball games and was a key figure in fight ing plans to run the Blue Ridge Parkway through Grandfather Mountain, which he owns. Friday said that in November Morton will receive the 2003 University Award, the highest honor given by the UNC-system Board of Governors for service to higher education in the state. “He’s probably one of the most dedicat ed alumni I’ve ever met.” “Tuesdays with Friday” is a monthly event, free and open to the public, featuring Friday and a guest speaker at the James M. Johnston Center for Undergraduate Excellence. Morton gave personal accounts of his work as a photographer of the people and wildlife of North Carolina. He showed pictures of Gov. Mike Easley, Prince Charles and a photo-story of Mildred the Bear, the official Grandfather Mountain mascot from 1967-92. Freshman Jenny Bao attended the lecture for a class on docu mentaries. “I’m really glad I came,” she said. “I just moved from California, so I learned a lot about North Carolina." Bao was impressed by the pic tures of historic figures who have visited the University, including a picture of Friday with President John F. Kennedy taken on University Day in i960. “I think he focused a lot on the history of Chapel Hill, and I still have to learn a lot about that,” Bao said.
