The Tar Heel Sports Network will provide live radio coverage; its flagship station is WCHL 1360-AM. Records: Virginia is 3-1,2-0 in the ACC. North Carolina is 0-4, 0-2 in the ACC. Series: UNC leads 56-47-4. Personnel update: Virginia - no injuries reported. UNC - CB Cedrick Holt, broken left ankle (out); WR Daunte Fields, broken right foot (out). The key matchup: The Virginia passing attack against the North Carolina secondary will be crucial. Everyone knows that the Cavaliers are going to run the ball effectively behind RB Wali Lundy, who rushed for 137 yards against Wake Forest last Saturday. The Tar Heels have no semblance of a run defense, allowing 216.8 yards per game on the ground, and this week they will not have the virtue of facing a backup running back for the third week in a row. But what will be interesting to see is whether the Virginia pass offense, led by returning senior quarterback Matt Schaub, gets back on track. Schaub returned last week after missing two games with an injured shoulder. Although he passed for 326 yards in the contest, he threw three second-half interceptions, allowing the Demon Dacons to nearly steal the game in Charlottesville. While safeties Mahlon Carey and Dexter Reid have been the unit’s bright spots, comerbacks Chris Hawkins and Lionell Green cannot afford to let Virginia’s inexperienced wide receivers catch 10- and 15-yard passes at will. The Tar Heel offense, meanwhile, should be able to get some points on the board - it’s just a matter of whether the team’s defense keeps the score close. Quarterback Darian Durant had an impres sive game against N.C. State last week, throwing UNC Crlmhla tfllw NHNHM Aug. 30, FSU37, UNCO Sept 6, UNC Syracuse Sept 20 at Wisconsin Sept 27 at N.C. IKK Special Teams Punter: John Lafferty Kicker: Dan Omer: 6-of-9 FG this season, third in ACC. Punt Returner: Michael Waddell: leads ACC with 14.6- yard average. Kick Returner: Michael Waddell: 35.3 yards per return UTH/MtCHAELA IDHAMMAR for 323 yards and three touchdowns. And while Virginia’s defense is stronger against the pass than the rush, Durant and his wide receivers, particularlyjarwarski Pollock, seem to be build ing an impressive chemistry. And expectjacque Lewis to make some catches in the flats out of the backfield. The running game is another matter. Despite the Tar Heels' plethora of options, they have done little out of the backfield; Durant has been the team’s leading rusher in two games thus far this season. If the North Carolina running game can’t break a big play early, it will become increasingly difficult for Durant to find open receivers amidst nickel and dime coverage pack ages. Final analysis/prediction: This game is winnable for UNC. Despite the Tar Heels’ infamously poor defense, which still ranks last in Division I-A, the Virginia offense is far from perfect. With a couple of turnovers or a lucky break, the Tar Heels may have a chance to get die Family Weekend crowd going. Then again, the more likely reality is that Schaub will have the breakout game that the Cavaliers thought the quarterback would when they deemed him a Heisman candidate before the season started. While Schaub’s Heisman campaign might be a stretch these days, a win on the road at Kenan Stadium certainly isn’t. Virginia 34, UNC 24 - Compiled by Jacob Karabell 9
