Homecoming 2003
Week packed with activity
‘Late Night with Roy’is highlight

The Carolina Athletic
Association, in conjunction with a
variety of student organizations, is
planning a number of exciting
activities for the 2003
Homecoming festivities.
Organizers hope that the events,
which occur throughout this week
as opposed to one weekend as in
the past, will get all students to
participate.
“One of the goals of the week is
to improve student involvement on
campus,” said CAA Homecoming
Chairwoman Ginny Franks.
This years Homecoming theme
is “Still Crazy for Carolina.”
The kickoff event for
Homecoming week was the sth
annual Michael Hooker 5K road
race, which began at 9 a.m.
Saturday at Hooker Fields.
Proceeds benefit the Lineberger
Comprehensive Cancer Center.

This year’s most anticipated
event is Late Night With Roy
Williams on Friday, which opens
the 2003-04 basketball season.
“Late Night With Roy Williams
is going to be one of the signature
events of Homecoming weekend,”
Franks said. “People who enjoyed
(the event) last year will be
shocked and amazed.”
The event, which has been
moved from its usual venue of
Carmichael Auditorium to the
Smith Center, will come after
UNC’s 8 p.m. volleyball game
against Duke University.
Admission is free, and organiz
ers expect a capacity crowd.
Franks also said that the football
game against Arizona State
University on Saturday will be a
great opportunity for students and
faculty to interact and show their
love for UNC.
Mr. and Ms. UNC will be
crowned at the Homecoming foot-
(Tljp Oaihi ular Ticri
ball game. Voting for the election
will take place Tuesday. Students
can participate by visiting
http://studentcentral.unc.edu.
Event organizers also are trying
to involve downtown businesses in
the celebration through the “Paint
The Town Blue" project.
Letters were sent to about 75
downtown businesses encouraging
them to show spirit through store
front displays and merchandise
specials. “It is quite possible that
businesses will offer student dis
counts,” Franks said.
In a change from last year when
Homecoming did not include a
concert, organizers have scheduled
two bands to play this year.
The first, Virginia Coalition, will
play at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in
Alumni Hall.
Following the conclusion of
Saturday’s football game, the
Emma Gibbs Band will play on the
front lawn of the Carolina Inn.
Tickets for both concerts are $8
for general public and $5 for
General Alumni Association mem
bers.
Homecoming festivities con
clude at 9 p.m. Saturday with a
step show sponsored by the UNC
National Pan Hellenic Council.
The show, which will be co
hosted by New York City’s Hot 97
FM’s Fatman Scoop and 102
JAMZ’s Amos quick, will take
place in Carmichael Auditorium.
Tickets are sls in advance or
S2O at the door.
