Homecoming 2003
GAA parade
promotes spirit
About 20 groups plan to participate

Student organizations, local
businesses and community groups
will strut their stuff in the annual
Homecoming parade at 6 p.m.
Friday.
More than 20 organizations are
slated to participate in what is
expected be a fun and spirited
event sponsored by the General
Alumni Association.
For the past two years the
parade was organized by the
Carolina Athletic Association.
Organizers said the parade will
kick off at the Bell Tower and trav
el to the Old Well via Raleigh Street
and Cameron Avenue. In the event
of rain the parade will continue,
unless weather becomes severe.
The parade’s purpose is to repre
sent visually the theme of
Homecoming, which is “Crazy for
Carolina,” said Sallie Hutton, one of
the organizers and GAA coordina
tor of alumni reunions. “We would
like a large involvement from both
student organizations and the town
and hope for the parade to be tun
and spirited.”
Many community groups are
planning to join students in the cel
ebration. Stormy, mascot for the
Carolina Hurricanes, will make an
appearance. Local antique cars also
will be on display, said Katie Jensen,
GAA Homecoming parade chair.
Jensen said she expects the can
didates for Mr. and Ms. UNC to

make an appearance.
Student groups, including
members of the marching band,
dance team, UNC Dance
Marathon, UNC Clef Hangers, stu
dent government and the National
Pan Hellenic Council will also par
ticipate in the event.
Dance Marathon and the GAA
will both have floats. NPHC will put
on a step show and showcase cars.
Spectators can expect to see
more than just floats in the parade.
Organizers said they are promot
ing displays of decorated vehicles
and participation from people
marching in costumes.
Hutton said this was done to
encourage organization involve
ment, as floats are often difficult to
design.
The GAA sent an e-mail to all
official student organizations to
offer the groups a chance for pub
licity and show school pride.
Interest meetings for
Homecoming parade were held for
student organizations in early
October. GAA representatives also
attended various student organiza
tion meetings and met with group
leaders to discuss the parade.
Hutton said, “GAA hopes stu
dents will come out to support stu
dent organizations and local busi
nesses and groups, and enjoy
Homecoming to the fullest.”
