u!hr Satlg ®ar Heel Probe to find if‘6o Minutes’ showed classified document THE ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Treasury Department is pursuing an investigation into whether a classified document might have been shown during a TV show in which former Treasury Secretary Paul O’Neill spoke out against the Bush administration. Treasury spokesman Rob Nichols said Monday that the department has asked the Office of the Inspector General to look into the matter. The request comes a day after CBS’ “60 Minutes” featured O’Neill and the new book he is pro moting, “The Price of Loyalty.” O’Neill is described as a princi pal source for the new book, writ ten by former Wall Street Journal reporter Ron Suskind. Along with interviews with O’Neill, Suskind drew on 19,000 documents O’Neill provided. Suskind also interviewed other Bush insiders for the book. On “60 Minutes,” CBS journalist MLK ROAD FROM PAGE 3 Road residents and businesses also could be a factor in the deci sion. UNC also will have to be con sulted since the road might serve as an main entrance for the proposed Carolina North development. One of them, marked secret, says ‘Plan for post-Saddam Iraq.’” A spokesman for “60 Minutes” said a cover sheet of the briefing materials was shown. David Rosenthal, executive vice president and publisher of Simon & Schuster, the book’s publisher, said: “We stand behind the book. Ron Suskind has acted responsibly and properly in the writing of this book.” Nichols declined to comment on whether the cover sheet of the doc ument shown on “60 Minutes” was part of the 19,000 documents TVeasury supplied to O’Neill. O’Neill contends that the United States began laying the ground work for an invasion of Iraq just days after the president took office in January 2001 more than two years before the start of the war that ousted Saddam Hussein. “We want to get a broad citizen input on this issue,” Ward said. Fred Battle, president of the local chapter of NAACP and sup porter of the proposal, believes these obstacles can be overcome. “We can do just about anything we put our mind to,” he said. Last semester, four volun teers came from UNC’s APPLES program in conjunction with an environmental studies class. “It was a great opportunity to get out,” said Kevin Jones, a UNC senior and one of the program’s volunteers. “You get so tied up in student life on campus, so to drive out there in just a different atmos phere was a cool opportunity.” Though UNC has no other offi cial programs with CPT, student groups frequently volunteer there. On top of such programs, CPT pro motes conservation education by offering weekend tours, hosting school field trips and attracting sci entists and animal specialists from around the globe. “It’s one thing to see (the ani mals) on TV, but it’s another thing to see them this close. Even the neighbors say that they love sitting on the porch listening to them at night,” Fulk said. Jeff Davies, UNC-system vice president of finance said system staff are not alone in their lack of a wage increase. “The General Assembly has not singled out the university and not provided raises for us,” he said. “They have not been able to pro vide raises for anyone.” Ruffin said the ultimate solu tion is showing the legislature that it has to fund staff increases, even in tough economic times. “The students and the University cannot bear this burden alone,” he said, adding that finding a way to fund staff salary increases without using tuition will require some hard decisions.
