iailij ®ar Mrri High hopes for UNC track BY MARY DUBY STAFF WRITER There will be an abundance of expectations as the North Carolina men and women’s track and field teams head to Clemson on Friday and Saturday for the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships. “I’ve been doing this for so long, my goal always is to win,” said Coach Dennis Craddock. The Tar Heel women have won 14 ACC Indoor titles. If they can handle the tough competition of Clemson, Florida State and Georgia Tech, the team could earn its third consecutive indoor or out door ACC victory. “We want to win because we want to go for the triple crown,” said freshman hurdler Porscha Dobson, whose time of 8.41 sec STUDY ABROAD FROM PAGE 3 grams. UNC officials said they want to create more internation al opportunities, whether study ing abroad or having an intern ship, and attract more interna tional faculty. Especially for in-state students, financing the cost of a study abroad program can be a major hurdle because programs often cost several thousand dollars more than UNC tuition. Officials also stressed the lack of adequate scholarships to make up for the increased costs of studying abroad. “Until recently, the average award was SSOO. That’s the cost of the study abroad fee (a required deposit),” Farrow said. “We’ve tried to increase the value of study abroad scholar ships.” Contact the University Editor at udesk@unc.edu. SUBWAY FROM PAGE 3 He said the rent will be consid erably higher than it was in the old location. Charles House, chairman of the Chapel Hill Downtown Commission’s board of directors, said the move is positive for Subway and the business community. “Before too long, we will have a full street again,” House said. Neakta said the renovations at the new Subway store are almost complete. He said he has been remodeling the store since December and has changed “just about everything.” The new store tentatively will HEALTH FROM PAGE 3 and possibly have theme nights.” The Physical Activity Committee plans to encourage students to get the recommended amount of exer cise each day, Hau said. But Hau said the major goal of Healthy Campus 2010 is to provide an umbrella organization for dif ferent health promotion programs. “We can be used to promote var ious activities and to show stu dents how they can establish healthy behavior early on in their adulthood,” she said. Hau said that out of about 500 organizations at UNC, not one promotes health issues for the campus community as a whole. ©I?? Captain Alice Schmidt is expect ed to lead the way for UNC as she strives to defend her title in the 800. However, Schmidt and other touted runners have been banged up recently. Sprinters Tiffany Flomo and Anissa Gainey, Dobson, vaulter Tatyana Kirichenko and dis tance runner Carol Henry all have battled injuries this season. “They’re all still competing, but they’re not where they need to be,” Craddock said. “We’re hoping that they’ll come back around for us.” The Tar Heel women will also rely heavily on their field event ath letes to put points on the board. Weight thrower Laura Gerraughty set anew UNC indoor shot put FAMILY FROM PAGE 3 kind of won people over because of his charismatic personality.” His mother believes this progress is due largely to the effort and care demonstrated by the entire University community, not only to the medical attention George receives at UNC Hospitals. “It’s the whole UNC family that keeps us going there,” Kupit said. “It’s not just the doctors. It’s the students and the kindness shown to us.” Kupit said that she has noticed the volunteer spirit at the University ever since George came into her care but that most stu dents probably are unaware of the impact their efforts have on the lives of families that come into the hospital. “It’s the TLC that we get from the nurses and the students and Dance Marathon that make the whole hospitalization experience open this week, but Neakta said he is waiting for the Orange County Health Department to inspect the remodeled building. If the department finds any problems, the opening could be delayed, but Neakta said he was confident that the new store defi nitely would be open before the end of the month. There is anew retail business waiting to fill the space left behind by Subway, but building owner Michael Fox said the business has not signed a lease yet. “I have a proposed tenant, but I am not at liberty to say who it is.” Contact the City Editor at citydesk@unc.edu. “It is important to promote health prevention information before chronic disease sets in on our generation,” she said. “I think nutrition is definitely the key because in college you establish your eating habits.” The first event the group plans to get involved in is “Love Your Body Week,” scheduled for the week of Feb. 23, which is devoted to teach ing awareness of eating disorders. Hau said she is looking forward to being the first student advocacy group for the national initiative. “The organization has great potential for really making a dif ference,” she said. UNC’s top four pole vaulters have also led the conference all season. “I think Coach Craddock is right when he says that if everyone works their hardest, we can defi nitely win this,” Schmidt said. On the men’s side, Craddock is hoping to finish in the top two in the competitive conference. The title has eluded UNC since 1996. “The team is impressing me,” Craddock said. “Each week we seem to get a little bit better that I think we have a shot at the top two.” John Hubbard aims to add to the four high jump titles that he has already won this season. “I feel really good the chances of winning are good,” he said. “I bearable,” she said. For George, who celebrated his eighth birthday on Valentine’s Day, the future holds many challenges but offers many possibilities. If his resilient personality and past performance are any indica tion of what’s to come, George will be surprising his family, friends and doctors for a long time. “I know he has a life-threaten ing illness, I know that,” Kupit said. “But I refuse to look at the bad side of it.” Contact the Features Editor atfeatures@unc.edu. SCHOOLS FROM PAGE 3 “But unless the working conditions and salaries improve in the state, we will still have a retention problem.” Gage said that 50 percent of teachers leave the work force with in their first five to seven years and that salary could be the main rea son. But retention is not inde pendent of supply. Gage noted that many teachers work in the same region where they attended school. “If we can recruit and develop our supply within a region, statis tics indicate that we’ll have a lot better chance of teachers staying within the system.” Contact the State & National Editor at stntdesk@unc.edu. Hubbard will triple jump for the first time this season in an attempt to solve this problem. The Tar Heel men need all their athletes to peak this weekend in order to claim a title. Craddock is confident in the physical ability of both teams. He said that this week, there’s nothing he can do except boost confidence and try to create the best assort ment of runners to turn up some secret weapons.
