Streete rebounds in final year

Dionne Streete quietly exited
the North Carolina softball locker
room, hands shoved deep in her
pockets with a complacent expres
sion across her face.
Contrary to her unassuming and
“soft-spoken” personality, as coach
Donna Papa describes it, Streete is
a powerhouse at the plate.
The senior blasted three home
runs in two doubleheaders against
N.C. State and Maryland this
weekend.
Her solo home run in the sec
ond game against State gave UNC
a win in extra innings.
“This is by far her best year hit
ting,” Papa said. “She was not con
sistent as a hitter over the last
three years.”
Streete’s batting average last
year was .235, and she tallied only
three home runs.
She classified last year’s per
formance at the plate as a slump,
but she refocused this season to
step up and replenish some of the
senior leadership that had gradu
ated.

“I think I have more confidence
this year,” Streete said. “Hitting
positively or negatively reinforces
itself. This season I’ve had a lot of
success at the plate. It’s just that
positive reinforcement that keeps
cycling.”
As of Sunday, Streete is hitting
.348 and has smacked eight home
runs this season she hit five in
her first three years.
“You always want a senior to go
out on a high note and have the
best part of their career happen
ing,” Papa said. “We need her lead
ership now.”
Ask the modest Streete about
her own home run streak, and she
quickly directs the attention to the
team as a whole.
“I don’t think anyone of us gets
up to hit a home run,” Streete said.
“There’s just a general desire to get
on base.”
