®if Sailg (Ear Hrri FIELD HOCKEY PREVIEW UNC seeks results with new game plan Starting lineup to remain intact BY GABRIELLE DE ROSA ASSISTANT SPORTS EDITOR North Carolina field hockey coach Karen Shelton sat on the scorer’s table, silent for the majority of Sunday’s Blue and White scrim mage. Occasionally, she got up to change the score or shout a quick direction, but there wasn’t much for her to do Shelton had already crafted her team into a well-oUed machine During that scrimmage, the Tar Heels were not only the home and away team, but the referees, the coaches, the cheerleaders and the time keepers as well. “Three minutes left!” shouted sophomore Rachel Dawson as her team crept toward the 25-yard line. “That’s a penalty stroke,” another player called out when senior Carey Fetting-Smith blew the whistle on a play inside the circle. Two upperclassmen took a player aside at the half to demonstrate a more effective defending technique. And both teams erupted in cheers as redshirt freshman Liz Morris slapped one in the comer of the goal. The players handled all aspects of the game. They were never silent while they were on the field, thus serving as the prime example of every coach’s favorite command: communicate. “It is a sign of a mature team,” said Shelton, who saved the bulk of her coaching for halftime. “I felt like last year we were mature, and this year we’re even more mature.” The Tar Heels did not lose any players to graduation this season, maintaining their starting lineup. With familiar faces on the ros ter, the team took steps through out the offseason to improve its spirit, including reading former UNC men’s basketball coach Dean Smith’s book “The Carolina Way.” “We’re buying into (Smith’s) philosophy: ‘play hard, play smart, play together,’” Shelton said. “What we want to do is impose our sys tem, impose the way we play on other teams.” That new system first will be imposed on Michigan at the ACC/ lath} ®ar MM Child Care AFTERNOON DRIVER NEEDED. DTH FILE PHOTO / LAURA MORTON North Carolina senior Carey Fetting-Smith (2) expects to lead a deeper squad in 2004. With all starters return ing, the team focused on improving its chemistry and reworking its defensive schemes during the offseason. Big Ten Challenge in Winston- Salem this Saturday. The Tar Heels played Michigan in their final game of 2003, when they were eliminated from the NCAA Tournament in the first round. “I couldn’t care less wheth er we’re playing Michigan or Timbuktu,” Shelton said. “Doesn’t matter who we’re playing first, just as long as we play well together.” Along with this new philosophy, UNC is changing its game plan in the backfield. “We’re trying to be more attacking,” said junior Naomi Weatherald, who anchored the defense last season. She played more in the midfield during the scrimmage, and she even scored two goals. Weatherald added with a laugh, “Usually I don’t score a lot of goals, but maybe this season will be the breakthrough.” Despite the improvements, Shelton noted concerns about the number of turnovers the offense has been committing in practice. “Turnovers kill a team and espe cially the way we play,” she said. “We play a very unselfish, support oriented type of game. So, people are running in support of the ball, and if you turn it over it’s a long way back.” The team is also putting finish ing touches on comer executions. Shelton said this year’s roster has a„ simple yet dangerous comer. Classified Advertising For Rent For Rent FOR RENT IMMEDIATE OCCUPANCY. Efficiency apartment. Short street. Sports “Rachel (Dawson’s) drag flicks are stronger than they were last year, hpr hit is better,” Shelton said. “There’s going to be nothing new or flashy about it. We’re going to go with bread-and-butter options and hope to get lots of shots on goal.” UNC’s depth also has improved in the offseason. Three redshirt freshmen are joining the roster this year as well as five new recruits. “We can run more numbers than ever before,” Shelton said. “I would say our team from top to bottom is stronger than we’ve ever been before. Our bottom player is stronger than we’ve ever had in the past.” Contact the Sports Editor at sports@unc.edu. For Rent Rooms Still Available! Johnson helps U.S. rout Greece Women tcfface Russia in semifinals THE ASSOCIATED PRESS ATHENS, Greece One game it’s Lisa Leslie, another it’s Tina Thompson or Diana Taurasi. Even the player they call Pee Wee can’t be ignored. Playing this U.S. basketball team leaves opponents breathless, dizzy and frustrated. Because it’s impossible to cover them all. “There are so many players who can step up,” Leslie said. “You never know who’s going to shine.” Shannon Johnson took her turn Wednesday. The 5-foot-7 guard who goes by the nickname Pee Wee scored 21 points, and the United States stormed into the semifi nals with a 102-72 victory against Greece, which had heart, the home court and little else. It was the first starring appear ance for Johnson, who had scored only 12 points in the first five games. Leslie, the team’s leading scorer in the tournament, accepted a sup porting role this time and seemed not the least bit bothered, recall ing something that 1996 Olympic coach Tara Van Der Veer once said. “We’re like an orchestra and no one has any particular solos,” Leslie said. “We just make very good music.” The Americans are "humming along quite nicely. They hushed a boisterous crowd with their all around domination against Greece and will renew their longtime rivalry with Russia on Friday, a rematch of the world champion ships final in 2002. Russia advanced with a 70-49 victory against the Czech Republic. The semifinal winners meet Saturday for the gold medal. “This is it. No regrets now,” Thompson said. “There’s no get ting it back or catching up from a loss. That would mean no gold medal and, for us, no gold medal means failure.” Thompson helped her team get off to a fast start Wednesday, scoring 11 first-quarter points and finishing with 20. THURSDAY, AUGUST 26, 2004 added 14 points and 11 rebounds, Taurasi scored 13 and Leslie and Sheryl Swoopes, the two big gest names on the team, had 12 apiece. The passing was sharp, the defense quick and aggressive. When Leslie drove from near the top of the key to the basket for a layup midway through the second quar ter, the United States was up by 20 and the Greek fans who made up most of the crowd of 8,100 started losing their zeal. Even the “Hel-las! Hel-las!” chant began to wane and the crowd stopped booing when the United States had the ball, slip ping into a state of quiet accep tance. These U.S. players, the Greek fans discovered, are pretty darn good. Jones to compete in relay ATHENS, Greece - North Carolina alumna Marion Jones will be part of the U.S. Olympic 400-meter relay team, coach Sue Humphrey announced Wednesday night. Jones’ participation had been a subject of speculation because she is being investigated by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. However, she has not been charged with any doping offense and qualified Wednesday night for the long jump finals. Many, including Gail Devers, had campaigned for Jones to be left off the relay because if she is found guilty of doping, the team could be stripped of any medal it wins. The lineup, in order, will be Angela Williams, Jones, 100-meter silver medalist Lauryn Williams and LaTasha Colander, another former Tar Heel. Humphrey has decided to go with the same quartet in Thursday night’s semifinals and Friday’s finals, barring any injuries or other unforeseen problems, said USA "Rack & Field spokeswoman Jill Geer.
