The beer company’s trademark eight-horse hitch paraded down Rosemary and Franklin streets for about 45 minutes, enough time for representatives to present a case of beer to 11 downtown bars that carry Anheuser-Busch products. “We wanted to show our custom ers that we appreciate them,” said Jim Hanson, vice president and sales manager of Durham-based Harris Inc., an Anheuser-Busch distributor. Company President Jay Harris said the Chapel Hill bars have been consistent customers. “We wanted to recognize their long-term patronage,” he said. Among the Clydesdales’ stops were Pantana Bob’s and Breadmen’s, both on Rosemary Street, and Woody’s Tar Heel Tavern & Grill on Franklin Street. “It’s not every day you see Clydesdales on Rosemary Street,” said Linanne Kulick, manager at Lucy’s Restaurant on Henderson Street. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime event in Chapel Hill.” About 150 people followed the *Find Internationally Oriented Colleagues Across Campus* Faculty International Expertise Database UCIS has created a searchable, online database that highlights faculty interests and activities. www.unc.edu/fle tUNC UNIVERSITY CENTER FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDIES If you have international expertise, visit the website to either update or add your information. Tanita Howard of Chapel Hill was among those watching the parade. “I think this is great for the kids,” she said. “They’re beautiful horses.” Howard said she thinks the appearance will increase business at various bars. “It’s going to bring more people out that wouldn’t nor mally come out,” she said. Julie Barrett and Rebecca Calderara, both freshmen at UNC, watched the parade together near Woody’s. laihj (Tar “1 think it’s a wonderful promo tional idea,” Barrett said. She said Homecoming weekend visitors possibly accounted for the large turnout. Muffin Brosig of Hillsborough, who owns two draft horses, said she was impressed by the Clydesdales’ behavior. “It’s amazing that the Clydesdales are so well-trained. They’ve got a job to do,” she said. Hitch-driver Manny Raber said the horses aren’t always so well behaved. “It depends on what day it is,” he said. “Some days they work and some days they don’t.” Harris Team Leader Larry Wetterer said Budweiser represen tatives ensured the legality of deliv ering the beer during the event. “We made sure ahead of time there would be no problems,” he said. Kulick forecasted more Budweiser sales at the bars thanks to the appearance. “I think it’ll bring a cer tain American spirit,” she said. “Everyone will want a Bud.” Anheuser-Busch representa tives also planned to be at the Homecoming football game against Miami on Saturday. They were also scheduled to appear at the Halloween celebra tion on Franklin Street. Contact the City Editor at citydesk@unc.edu. Bin Laden addresses Americans THE ASSOCIATED PRESS CAIRO, Egypt Osama bin Laden, addressing the American public ahead of presidential elec tions, said in a video aired Friday that the United States can avoid another attack if it stops threaten ing the security of Muslims. “Your security is not in the hands of Kerry, Bush or al-Qaida. Your security is in your own hands,” bin Laden said, referring to the presi dent and his Democratic opponent. “Each state that does not mess with our security, has naturally guaran teed its own security.” Admitting for the first time that he ordered the Sept. 11, 2001 ter rorist attacks, bin Laden said he did so because of injustices against the Lebanese and Palestinians by Israel and the United States. The FBI and Justice Department had no immediate assessment of the tape. Bin Laden said he wanted to explain why he ordered the suicide airline hijackings that hit the World Trade Center and the Pentagon so Americans would know howto avoid “another disaster.” He accused Bush of misleading Americans by saying the attack was carried out because al-Qaida “hates freedom.” Bin Laden said his followers have left alone countries that do not threaten Muslims. He said he was first inspired to attack the United States by die 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon. “While I was looking at these destroyed towers in Lebanon, it sparked in my mind that the tyrant should be punished with the same and that we should destroy towers in America, so that it tastes what we taste and would be deterred from killing our children and women,” he said. Bin Laden suggested Bush was slow to react to the attacks, giving the hijackers more time than they expected. At the time of the attacks, the president was listening to school children in Florida reading a book. “It never occurred to us that the commander-in-chief of the American armed forces would leave 50,000 of his citizens in the two towers to free these horrors alone,” he saiH “It appeared to (Bush) that a lit tle girl’s talk about her goat and its butting was more important than the planes and their butting of the skyscrapers. That gave us three times the required time to carry out the operations, thank God,” he said.
