8 MONDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2004 Dawson keys Tournament wins BY DANIEL MALLOY ASSISTANT SPORTSATURDAY EDITOR WINSTON-SALEM - In her 150th minute of ACC Tournament field hockey, Rachel Dawson was still fighting. Protecting a two-goal lead in the final minute of North Carolina’s victory against Maryland in the final, Dawson deftly maneuvered between Terrapin forwards. Fittingly, she smashed the ball downfield as time expired, clinch ing the Tar Heels’ first ACC title since 1997- Dawson, a midfielder, was on the field for every second of the tour nament two full games and 10 minutes of overtime against Wake Forest willing the Tar Heels to victory with her emotional and fre netic play. But Dawson said fatigue did not enter her mind. Dawson displayed her defensive talents Friday by slide tackling any Wake player within her reach, coming up with several key turnovers. “I think Wake Forest put a lot of pressure on us, and it required a diving, valiant effort to stop them,” Shelton said. After a 20-1 season and a title in the toughest conference in the country, Dawson said the team still needs to improve. “I don’t think we connected (on passes) as well as we can,” she said. “It’s kind of inspiring to know that we can compete so hard and win on heart and hustle.
