You’ve got to hit those.” And the Hurricanes (12-5,3-3) almost completely abandoned any effort to battle in the paint once their two biggest interior threats went to the bench. “Miami is guard-oriented, so guard-oriented,” May said. “We knew they didn’t throw the ball in (the post) much, just by scouting them. We knew we could help out on the guards more and just try to deny the post.” And that help from inside allowed North Carolina to smoth er the Hurricanes on the perim eter. Guillermo Diaz scored 24 sec ond-halfpoints, many in acrobatic fashion, and finished with 30. But guards Robert Hite and Anthony Harris, both typically double-figure scorers, shot a combined 4-for-26 from the field. Hite, who normally shoots better than 40 percent from 3- point range, missed all seven of his attempts from behind the arc Saturday. “Jackie (Manuel) and Rashad (McCants) did a great job, and when I come off the bench, I have to give all my energy to try to wear those guys out,” Scott said. “If you keep running them offensively, they’ll wear down.” Despite its dominance both inside and out, though, North Carolina couldn’t extend its lead into double-digits until the waning moments of the first half. But a 3-pointer from Manuel —one of two the senior hit in the game sparked the Tar Heels on an 11-1 run to close the half and a 7-0 run immediately following the break. “The last four minutes in the half was the difference in the game,” said Miami coach Frank Haith. “We turned the ball over a couple of times, and we put them on the free-throw line quite a bit during that stretch, and they were very effective.” The Hurricanes never chal lenged again. Manuel finished the game with 14 points, tying a season high, and a total of five Tar Heels broke dou- MCCANTS FROM PAGE 12 This time, it counted. McCants jubilantly loped back to his end of the court, giving both the “Dynasty” symbol and a salute to the raucous throng of 20,714 at the Smith Center. The three capped an 11-0 run that put the Tar Heels up by 24 points and made the game per manently out of reach for visiting Miami in the 87-67 UNC win. Even without any scoring con tribution from McCants, the Tar Heels were still up 14 at halftime. But his involvement was key in putting away the game. “He’s the scorer on our team,” said forward Jackie Manuel. “We’ve got to keep him in the game to bal ance our offense. We’ve got to get it inside, but we’ve also got to keep Rashad in the game and let Rashad do what he does well.” McCants was certainly in the game after halftime, sinking four of five shots in the closing frame. At his best, he is arguably the most dangerous scorer in college basket ball. “It’s pretty much I’m just looking to take what the defense gives me,” McCants said. “I just have to be aggressive and take what I want.” Miami coach Frank Haith, who also faced McCants last year as an assistant at Texas, praised the junior’s resiliency in coming back after halftime. “He’s a great talent,” Haith said. “He’s a tremendous talent, and he played with poise today.” McCants remained composed throughout the game, never forc ing his shot, never getting out of rhythm. But freshman sensation Marvin Williams, a model of consistency throughout his rookie campaign so far, struggled with his shot and managed just seven points. In the end, though, the Tar Heels’ ability to take what was given especially at the free throw line made the difference in yet another lopsided victory at the Smith Center. “I talked to our guys before the game, and I said, ‘Buildings don’t win games players do,’” said UNC coach Roy Williams. “We turned it over more than I wanted to and didn’t make all the shots, to say the least, but in this league, you’d better be happy about any ‘W.’” Contact the Sports Editor at sports@unc.edu. to feed the ball inside, notching four assists for the game. The performance was another sign of McCants’ improved atti tude this season, as he is more concerned with the scoreboard than his stat line. “Last year, it was more about getting the shots,” said UNC cen ter Sean May. “This year, he’s just taking his time and letting the game come to him. He’s getting us involved.... He had like six assists at Clemson, and he still scored 23 points. “He wasn’t aware that he was distributing the ball that much. He doesn’t know how much attention he brings to the game.” It was this improved, unselfish McCants who was the only player on the bench standing up with five minutes left in the game and the outcome already decided. “I think this year he’s grown tre mendously, a whole lot,” Manuel said. “He knows when to take a shot, and he knows when not to take a shot. I think that’s helped his game out a whole lot.” Contact the Sports Editor at sports@unc.edu. Tar Heel loses close match to Nebraska Goliath BY AL KILLEFFER STAFF WRITER After a strong 25-12 win against Virginia on Friday night, the North Carolina men’s wres tling team looked poised to take on the seventh-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers on Saturday in a match where it knew its approach could be anything but cavalier. While the Tar Heels put up a fight, taking a 7-0 lead early on, they eventually fell to Nebraska 34-7. “On paper, we’ve got no chance against a team like Nebraska,” said head coach C.D. Mock. “I just wanted us to go out there and fight real hard, and that’s exactly what we did.” The heavyweight bout, in which UNC’s Spencer Nadolsky squared off against Nebraska’s Mitch Manstedt, seemed to epitomize the TENNIS FROM PAGE 12 beat them they’re not going to give us the match.” The Tar Heels’ evening match against Elon was canceled due to inclement weather. UNC coach Brian Kalbas was glad to face No. 18 Tennessee (0-1) so soon in the season. “To me having a match this tough early, I think, is good because it kind of gets your team ready for what you’re going to face through out the year,” Kalbas said. UNC (3-0) jumped to an early advantage, clinching the doubles point in two of three matches. The nation’s 14th-ranked tan dem of Mojzis and Kendall Cline defeated the nation’s 51st-ranked duo of Tennessee’s Sabita Maharaj and Ashley Robards. The Tar Heel’s No. 2 seed of Jenna Long and Sara Anundsen defeated Melissa Schaub and Ghizela Schutte (8-5), and UNC’s third pair of Caitlin Collins and Alex Jurewitz fell to Blakeley Griffith and Bryce Marable (8-3). “This is our first test,” said Long, a sophomore. “I felt like everyone was super focused, win or lose, stayed positive, and overall it was a great match.” At the No. 2 singles spot, senior Cline clinched the team victory for North Carolina by defeating Griffith in two sets (6-4, 6-4). Cline, who ranks 37th nationally, recorded her seventh consecutive singles victory. A nearly three-hour battle between the No. 1 seeds highlight ed the match, as Mojzis, ranked 25th, faced the No. 50 Maharaj. Each claimed a set (7-6,6-7) before Mojzis took the tiebreaker 10-7. “I love it when it gets a little crazy,” Mojzis said. “I love the ener gy. I like the tough times. I feed off that, I don’t like it when it’s dead.” Long overcame falling behind at the start of each set during the No. 3 seed match and staged strong come backs to upset No. 107 Vicky Jones. In the rest of singles play, Anundsen easily defeated Schutte (6- 2,6-2), while Collins fell to Marable (6-4,6-0) and Charlotte Tansill fell to UT’s Schaub (6-5,7-5). “It was important that we stay composed, stay positive because if we didn’t it would give (UT) a lot of momentum and confidence,” Kalbas said. “We did that today throughout, even the matches we lost.” Contact the Sports Editor at sports@unc.edu. Weighing in at 285, Manstedt enjoyed not only a 55-pound advantage over Nadolsky but the added benefit of a few extra inches as well. As the pair shook hands in the center of the ring, it was hard to believe a UNC David had any chance against the corn-fed Goliath at all. There’s a reason, of course, Nadolsky wrestles heavyweight. His strength enables him to stand up to opponents twice his size. In fact, Nadolsky said he realized quickly that “(Manstedt) wasn’t ever going to take me down.” The pair went back and forth during the first period, but with neither making a successiul strike, the duel remained scoreless at the sound of the first buzzer. Carmichael Auditorium had WRESTLING FROM PAGE 12 before. “Last week, we gave them a good match and fought hard, but today we just came out flat,” said Shaw, who provided UNC with its only major decision of the afternoon. “Nebraska’s a great team. In the second period, Manstedt finally ended the scoring drought with an escape that put him ahead 1-0 going into the third. Seconds later, Nadolsky responded with a reversal from which Manstedt then escaped to even the score at 2-2. In the remaining minutes of regulation, Nadolsky succeeded in warding off several Manstedt strikes to take the match into overtime. Once again, the first two periods passed without score. Manstedt seemed to be growing increasingly frustrated, throwing up his hands at one point in response to the referee’s call of stalling. In the third period, he secured the team would respond better. “We knew what (Nebraska) had when we came out,” he said. “What had to happen was for us to win five (bouts) and, in the other five, not get pinned.” But Mock said his main disap pointment was the number of pins that Nebraska was able to get. “My problem is when I’ve got a group of guys out there fighting hard or getting shots so then they can get out there, and then I’ve got guys who go out and get pinned,” DASH TODAY UNC VS. Down 3-2 in the final seconds, Nadolsky attempted a takedown for the victory but failed to get one. The loss was a tough one for Nadolsky, who had gone undefeated in his five dual matches before it. With wins in the first two bouts by sophomore Bobby Shaw and All-American Evan Sola, the stage seemed to be set for a UNC triumph. Unfortunately, the team’s initial vic tories proved to be their only ones. “I had two or three really good shots; (they were) just at the edge of the mat,” Nadolsky said. “Next time I just need to take him down a few times during regulation.” Contact the Sports Editor at sports@unc.edu. he said. “That’s a problem, and it’s got to stop.” Despite the loss, Mock said he was still happy with the team’s efforts and saw some promise. “It’s not desirable to wrestle a team like Nebraska back-to-back,” he said. “But for us to be out there like that I mean, there were matches that could have gone either way.” Contact the Sports Editor at sports@unc.edu. .
