ahf SatUj (Ear MM City schools look to up funds Officials concerned about feasibility BY BRIANNA BISHOP ASSISTANT CITY EDITOR A $270 increase in per-pupil funding for city schools has district officials concerned about whether their budget requests for next fiscal year can be met. The district is requesting about $2.9 million in additional funds —a 6.6 percent increase from last fiscal year. The increase is normally con sidered to be a modest request, according to a memorandum from Superintendent Neil Pedersen in his budget report, which was released last week. But a need to increase per pupil funding by $270 has raised concerns about whether that funding can be substantiated. “It is a relatively large increase on a per-pupil basis,” Pedersen said, adding that there are some concerns in the district about the Orange County Board of Commissioners’ ability and willing ness to fund this increase. The memo states that in previ ous years, the school board typi cally has approved a per-pupil increase of about S6O. But a decline in the number of students from 2005-06 pro jections has caused next year’s increase to be so large. If the board were to provide only the S6O increase this year, the dis trict would have $2 million less in local funds. And that possibility has some school officials concerned, as there are several initiatives they would like to fund this coming year. “There’s some areas in which Cut and save- —Cut and save— Hanes HaM Dean Jr. 919-962-6507 (enter UCS@IUlC.edu WALK-IN HOURS: Answers to career questions and resume reviews—Mon-Fri, 10 —3p e? 4 PROGRAMS 8 co- Q- How to Succeed in Business By Really Trying: This session will go § through the first year on the job and deal with topics such as how to establish per- <p ■3 formance guidelines, make the most of your reviews, avoid common first year mis- 1 takes, and deal with company policies. These areas, he said, include funding for a middle college program at Durham Technical Community College, additional textbooks and planning for the implementation of districtwide high school reform, with compo nents such as small learning acad emies. He said the commissioners are now in the process of decid ing how they can fund initiatives that each district sees as pressing needs. City schools also have concerns about possible discretionary reduc tions of about $570,000 at the state level. Pedersen’s memo provides sev eral potential reductions in the district’s budget to address the projected shortfall. “At this point in the year, it would be irresponsible to ignore these possibilities,” the memo states. “We must identify areas in lh Lumina Take 15/501 South toward; Pittsboro Exit Main St./Southern Village SIN CITY 11:45-4:15-7:00-9:35 MISS CONGENIALITY 2: ARMED & FABULOUS S 1:15-3:45-7:20-9:45 THE RING TWO ES11:30-4:00-7:10-9:40 ROBOTS El 1:00-3:10-5:10-7:15-9:15 S£ n . ddS StadlT *B-00 |pio ITA uISEATIwc For Rent 111 CAMERON COURT. 2BR/1 BA in triplex very close to campus, brick exterior, huge rooms, hardwood floors, gas heat free and ample parking, W/D, good closet space. $1,150/month starting in June or August. The challenge, she said, will be in trying to maintain what the dis trict has now while continuing to improve. The school board will review the budget report at its April 7 meet ing, which will be held at 7 p.m. at Chapel Hill Town Hall. A public hearing on the budget will be April 21 at Mary Scroggs Elementary School, and the school board is expected to pass its requested budget May 5. Deputies still face, however, dif ficult choices for Cabinet posts and failed again to name anew president broadly expected to be Kurdish leader Jelleil Talabani.
