Daily (Tar Brel Domina makes ACC waves BY CASEY FERRELL STAFF WRITER In a season marked by tough losses, the relatively inexperienced North Carolina rowing team found a pair of bright spots in the per formance of All-ACC senior Julia Domina and a surprisingly domi nant second varsity eight. Domina, a team captain for the second year in a row, became the third Tar Heel in as many years to earn All-ACC honors last weekend “It’s cool because all my hard work paid off, and it’s nice to get something for that,” said the Cary native. But Domina said that the All-ACC team was not on her to-do list at the beginning of the season and that her selection came as a surprise. In a sport like rowing, success comes from a total team effort, so one person’s performance depends Panel won’t back 12th football game STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS MIAMI The Knight commis sion urged the NCAA to oppose the addition of a 12th regular-sea son game for Division I football teams until the effects of recent academic reforms for players become clear. The NCAA Division I Management Council has backed legislation that would allow Division I-A and I-AA schools to add a 12th game starting with the 2006 season. The NCAA Board of Directors on Thursday will consider the leg islation, which has the support of most athletic directors. The Knight commission last week sent a memo to the NCAA board of directors. The commission is a privately funded group formed in 1989 to promote reforms and greater presidential control of college sports. The NCAA’s latest academic reform movement is based on a point system that measures the retention and graduation rates of each team. Teams that fail to meet mini mum standards about a 50 per cent graduation rate are in dan ger of losing scholarships. Individual acco lades aren’t as important.” Head coach Sarah Haney said she is pleased Domina was recog nized for her talents, noting that the current captain has been suc cessful all four years she’s rowed with the team. “(Domina) is so extremely dedi cated to Carolina rowing, she never takes a break,” said Haney, adding that Domina’s work ethic is what sets her apart. “In the off-season, she definitely uses that as her time to go and gain on others,” Haney said. “And that has been her greatest attribute.” that consistently fall short of the NCAA’s minimum requirements might face post-season bans. According to the report released in February, half of the 328 Division I schools have at least one team that might face sanctions. But North Carolina fared well in the report. Almost all of the 26 Tar Heel varsity squads garnered an acceptable score under the new standards. Only the wrestling and men’s golf teams fell below the minimum. The men’s basketball team got a perfect score, becoming one of only a handful of top-ranked teams to do so. But until the effects of the new standards become clear, the Knight commission will hold its ground. “This coming fall will be the first time juniors will be subject to the increased progress toward degree requirements, and the academic performance program will be in effect as well,” the Knight commis sion wrote in its letter. “The commission, by a substan tial majority, urges the board to oppose the addition of a 12th foot ball game until the impact of these academics reform is clear.” | For Reirt^ For Rent KENSINGTON TRACE 2BR/2.58A. Domina contributes in other ways as well Haney praised her leadership role on the team. “She’s really worked on pulling in the reins on her teammates to make sure they’re holding them selves accountable 24 hours a day,” Haney said. Domina’s leadership will be missed next year, as the only two juniors on the roster will try to fill the void left by five departing seniors. Still, the Tar Heels have reason to believe they can continue to improve next season, even without senior leadership. The second varsity eight went undefeated in the regular season and finished fourth in last week end’s ACC Championship races in Clemson, S.C. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS RALEIGH More than seven months after the remnants of tropical storms caused extensive damage in western North Carolina, centers opened Monday where res idents can apply for help. Dubbed “Operation Brighter Day,” Recovery Application Centers in 50 disaster-declared coun ties opened in N.C. Cooperative Extension Center offices. For western North Carolina, those counties include: Avery, Buncombe, Graham, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Swain, Transylvania, Watauga and Yancey. The area was the hardest hit by September’s storms. The remnants of Hurricane Frances struck Western North Carolina on Sept. 7, dumping more than 14 inches of rain on some areas. Nine days later, what was left of Hurricane Ivan hit the region with high winds and tor rential rains. Eleven people died. News and Haney is thrilled to have that kind of depth on her team. “When you have an internally competitive team like ours, you’re going to have a lot of competitive boats,” Haney said. Meanwhile, Domina’s future won’t take her far from the sport she loves. While she works toward a master’s degree in sports psychology at Ithaca College next fall, Domina will be an assistant coach and will work with the women’s novice team. Haney had better keep an eye on her protege, as Domina ultimately hopes to end up back in Chapel Hill on the UNC coaching staff. “If the chance ever arises, I’d defi nitely come back here,” Domina said. “Because this is where my heart is.” Contact the Sports Editor at sports@unc.edu. Almost six months after the disaster, the legislature approved and Easley on Feb. 25 signed the Hurricane Recovery Act, providing $247-5 million in disaster relief for areas ravaged by the flooding. The centers provide a one-stop application service for hurricane victims who exhausted other ave nues of financial assistance and need additional aid. Applications will be accepted through May 27- The centers address concerns that applicants would have to go to different agencies to get help. “We have so many portals of entry, I don’t know where people go to ask for what,” Sen. Martin Nesbitt, D-Buncombe, said last week at a legislative meeting held to talk about state hurricane relief programs. Hurricane victims who got help from their insurance com panies or the Federal Emergency Management Agency and still have uninsured losses might be eligible for state financial aid. Types of help available include repair or replacement of housing or private bridges and driveways, and agriculture and fish farm losses. FISHER-FIS'.- ER REALTY, 929-1188 Dole goes to bat for bases panel THE ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON, D.C. - The upcoming round of military base closings must be “untarnished by political influence,” Republican Sen. Elizabeth Dole declared. Then she put in a plug for her own state. North Carolina “supports a unique military infrastructure,” prime for expansion not closure, Dole told the head of the commis sion that will review Pentagon pro posals for which bases to shut. Base closures have enormous political ramifications. No mat ter the political party, House and Senate members have a lot to lose if hometown bases shut down and voters blame the lawmakers for disappearing jobs. In February, a New Hampshire group visiting Washington sent a clear message to potential presiden tial candidates during private meet ings with Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn.; GOP Sens. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska and John McCain of Arizona; and Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York. Officials with the Greater Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce stressed the importance of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard to New Hampshire’s economy. The implied point: The facility’s closure could hurt the chances of anyone who runs for president in 2008. “It was innocent. We didn’t make any threats or anything like that,” said Dick Ingram, the chamber’s director. “But the reality is that we do have the first-in-the-nation primary and folks that want to be running for president take a special interest in what mat ters around here. So, we’d be fools not to use the moment.” The Pentagon originally esti mated that it had up to 25 percent Tlinl • 620 Market St. Lllinilia r/r:,”.: 1 Take 15/501 South towards Pittsboro Exit Main St./Southern Village THE INTERPRETER IS 1:15-4:15 7:00 9:45 KUNG FU HUSTLE ffl 1:45-4:05-7:15-9:35 AMITYVILLE HORROR 12:00-4:45 7:25-9:50 SAHARA Ml 1 :30-4:1 0-7:05-9:40 FEVER PITCH SB 1 :35-4:00-7:1 0-9:30 Matinees inn I SB.OO |Oi O tT A l| SEATING For Rent SPACIOUS 2BR/1 BA DUPLEX on wooded acre lot. Rumsfeld recently suggested the surplus probably will be less given that 70,000 troops from overseas are returning soon to the United States. Previous closure rounds eliminated or realigned 451 instal lations, including 97 major ones. In an effort to limit political influence on the process, a nine member commission chosen by the White House and congressio nal leaders works independently to vet the Pentagon list. Still, Chris Kelley Cimko, who worked on base-closing commis sions in the 19905, said, “It’s very, very hard to divorce yourself from the politics. You have to be very strong.” Commission Chairman Anthony Principi has pledged that his panel will be independent, fair and free of political influence. “National security will be our highest priority,” he told lawmak ers last month. “I believe that if we politicize this process, we will only increase the level of cynicism around the country and really doom it to failure.” He acknowledged in a written questionnaire to the Senate Armed Services Committee that one of his challenges will be ensuring “all commissioners and staff remain impartial and avoid political pres sure and conflicts of interest.” Administration aides say President Bush has been clear that national security not politics should dictate which bases are closed. \( MOVIES AT TIMBERLYNE Weaver Dairy at Airport Rd.
