Two awakenings bookended the year. Before the first day of classes, the Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History opened, ending a process that took more than a decade to reach fruition. And in the weeks before Commencement, the arrest of a Carolina Dining Services worker sparked student activism to a level UNC hadn’t seen since the start of the war in Iraq. The University opened its eyes to hope in the form of the Carolina Covenant and a renewed sense of civic responsibility. It stared down its demons, battling over a name chafigefor Airport Road and healing after the shock of a hate motivated attack on a UNC junior. And everyone celebrated the greatest awakening of all: the first national championship for the men’s basketball team in 12 years. As UNC moves further into the 21st century, no one knows where its dreams will take it. But one thing is sure: It’ll have to wake up.
