Arts group promotes
campus arts treasure
Ackland extends hours, programs
BY JACKY BRAMMER
STAFF WRITER
You don’t have to be an arts
major to experience art at the
University.
Students have access to valuable
resources on campus such as the
Ackland Art Museum.
And beginning in fall 2004,
undergraduates gained a voice in
the museum’s affairs with the for
mation of Student Friends of the
Ackland, an interest group that
increases awareness for the muse
um and its services.
The group is entirely stu
dent-run, said Amanda Hughes,
director of special projects at the
Ackland.
“It is a marvelous organization
that gets undergraduate students
involved in the ongoing business
of the museum,” she said.
The group wants to change the
perception that the Ackland or
art in general is for only scho
lastic purposes.

“A lot of students experience
the Ackland as part of a class
assignment,” said Maria Bleier, the
Ackland’s director of communica

“But really the desire with
Student Friends is to get students
to see the Ackland as their resource

To help increase student famil

Student Friends of the Ackland
helps spearhead fundraising proj

The group’s aim is “to create
events for students that are along

opportunities, social events and
cultural events,” Bleier said.
The relationship between the

sive to the needs of students,”
Hughes said.
One of Student Friends’ most
recent accomplishments in the
area of outreach is getting the
Ackland to expand operating hours
to include nights.
The museum recently announced
its “Art After Dark” program, dur
ing which patrons can access gal
leries until 9 p.m. on the second
Friday of every month.
Even though the group started
only last year, it already has about
100 members and has seen tan
gible success.
“The first year we had just
introduced it in the fall, and time
was spent introducing it,” Bleier
said.
“This year we have the students
in place, and we’re more orga
nized.”

Towns go green with projects
BY BRIANNA BISHOP
ASSISTANT CITY EDITOR
County and city officials want to
give their constituents a breath of
fresh air.
To meet that end, Chapel Hill,
Carrboro and Orange County have
engaged in a program to study green
house gas emissions in the area.
The Orange County Board
of Commissioners met Monday
to discuss the issue and review
the memorandum of agreement
already approved by Chapel Hill
and Carrboro town governments.
“I think all three communities
consider themselves to be very pro
gressive-minded in terms of envi
ronmental awareness,” Environment
and Resource Conservation Director
David Stancil said in an interview
Wednesday.
The three governments are mem
bers of the International Council of
Local Environmental Initiatives
—a group of local governments
from around the world committed
to sustainable development.
They made the commitment
to engage in the project at an
Assembly of Governments meeting
in September and now will be look
ing to hire a Toronto-based firm to
aid them in this pursuit.

“Our goal ultimately is to now have (the
Community Carbon Reduction Project)
spread across the country.”
DOUGLAS CRAWFORD-BROWN, director, ccr project
cooperation with town and county
staff, will take inventory on cur
rent emissions levels and draft an
action plan to reduce greenhouse
gases.
“In the end, I think we felt like
IES of Toronto had better experi
ence doing this,” Stancil said of
why the consultant was hired.
The company specializes in
helping municipalities review their
facilities. Its work has been seen in
places such as Chicago and Toronto,
and with the company’s help, local
officials hope to see the project
underway soon.
The total expected cost is about
$45,000, with the county picking up
$13,000t0 $14,000. The municipal
ities also hope to get grant money.
Noting that Orange County has
been established as a nonattain
ment zone by the Environmental
Protection Agency, commissioner
Stephen Halkiotis said Wednesday
that it’s important to get on this
initiative as soon as possible.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2005
Halkiotis expressed interest in
another air-quality improvement
program that Chapel Hill and the
University are just beginning.
The town of Chapel Hill could
be the first in the country to join
the Community Carbon Reduction
Project, a British group that hopes
to reduce greenhouse gas emis
sions by 60 percent by 2025.
Program Director Douglas
Crawford-Brown said they will soon
be making a formal pledge with the
town to reduce pollution.
He noted that initially the group
will work only with town staff to
reduce emissions from municipal
buildings. The hope from there is
for the town government to set an
example and get others involved.
“Our goal ultimately is to now
have it spread across the coun
try,” he said. “We’re starting with
Chapel Hill.”
