The Department of Pediatrics and the Center for Environmental Medicine, As thma, and Lung Biology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are conducting a research project to investigate the effects of environmental tobacco smoke on the organization of the cells lin ing the respiratory airways. Healthy adult subjects, both smokers and non-smokers, of both genders are invited to reply. We are particularly interested in recruiting subjects who are non-smokers but who are passively exposed to environ mental tobacco smoke at home or in the workplace. Individuals accepted into the study will be compensated for 1-3 clinic visits occurring over a three month period. Clinic visits will involve consultation with investigators regarding recent tobacco smoke and other environmental exposures, a non-invasive assay of nasal nitric oxide, a non invasive sampling of the cells lining the nasal cavi ties and submission of a urine sample(s).
