Original film makes the list
BY JIM WALSH
ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR
This Christmas, one UNC senior
is cashing in with a different kind
of wish list.
Sean Overbeeke, a communica
tions major in the writing for the
screen and stage program, will
have his original Christmas film
screened at the Varsity Theatre just
in time for the holidays.
Titled “Christmas Wish List,”
it is a quaint story about two
busy people who cross paths on
Franklin Street and teach each
other the true meaning of giv
ing. About 20 minutes long, the
film will be shown with “Good
Night and Good Luck” beginning
Saturday at the Varsity.
Set and filmed in Chapel Hill,
“Christmas Wish List” was an off
shoot of Overbeeke’s work in the
University program, the reason he
transferred to UNC and the source
of his confidence in directing.
“It’s been the attention to detail
that they make you pay to your
screenplay,” he said, referring to
the program’s strength.
Overbeeke’s $15,000 proj
ect was funded by investors and

picked up by a production compa
ny in Durham. He took it to Bruce
Stone, owner of the Varsity, and
asked him to screen it. Overbeeke
said he wanted to incorporate
a local angle in the film, which
was shot over the course of three
days.
“I sat down and the first three
things I wrote were Christmas,
reflective glass on Franklin Street
and coffee,” he said.
From those simple designs
Overbeeke crafted his tale,
employing several UNC students
in the process. Two actors in
“Christmas Wish List” hail from
UNC, and most of the cast are
N.C. natives.
Filming a movie in the middle
of Chapel Hill’s busiest street was
an interesting task for Overbeeke
and his crew. Production started
at sunrise and went all the way to
sunset. Many of the extras were
people who happened to be walk
ing along the street at that time.
“Obviously Franklin Street is a
big part of the story,” he said. “We
had to set up literally two traf
fic cones on different sides of the
sidewalk. ... We had production
lines.

the film.

and asking them not to look in the
camera.”
Overbeeke’s story also incor
porates a lot of music, and many
of the scenes are punctuated with
dramatic lyrics.
At the film’s climax, “The
Christmas Song” by Dave Matthews’
Band can be heard. Overbeeke said it
was no small task securing the rights
to the popular tune.
“We sent it to Dave Matthews
and they watched it, and I guess
they were so impressed with the
use of that song in the movie they
gave me one year’s rights to use it
for foreign and domestic film fes
tivals.”
Overbeeke has won two awards
and more than $5,000 in prize
money for his film. He said he
hopes to enter it into more festi
vals.
“The movie just got finished Oct.
22,” he said. “Basically I’m starting
my film festival run right now.”
