2 FRIDAY, MARCH 24, 2006 Rams Head basks in glow of national award Praised for mix of distinct venues BY NATE HEWITT STAFF WRITER University officials built the Rams Head Center with the dream of creating a gateway from North Campus to South Campus. One year after opening its doors, the center also is serving as a gate way to national accolades. Food Management magazine recognized Rams Head Center in its 2006 Best Concept Awards in its March issue. The center won in the category of “best new facility,” along with Segundo Dining Room at the University of Califomia-Davis and the Back Door Cafe at Prudential Financial in Newark, N.J. According to the magazine, Rams Head won due to its “spec tacularly successful melding of multiple dining and retail venues in a single location.” “We try to recognize, with this competition, innovation in the kind of environments our readers find themselves in,” said John Lawn, editor in chief of the magazine. The publication not only recog nizes campus dining halls but din ing facilities of all types, he said. With this competition, the magazine specifically wanted to recognize that there was a team involved in the facility’s success rather than a single manager, Lawn said. “I’m thrilled,” said Chape Whitman of Ricca Newmark Design, the interior designer of the facility. “It’s a great recognition to a ter rific project team, which included a lot of people from campus. They all played a critical role.” My alar Hrrl P.O. The project team recognized by the award includes Whitman, as well as Ira Simon, director of food and vending services; Mike Freeman, director of auxiliary services; and Carolyn Elfland, associate vice chan cellor for campus services. In addition to the dining hall, the End Zone sports cafe and the Rams Head Market were high lighted as impressive features. Students who attended UNC before Rams Head opened said they approve of new aspects available. “It’s a lot better than Chase (Hall) used to be,” said sophomore Casey Testa. Chase Hall was torn down last year to make way for the Student Academic Services building on South Campus. “It’s more convenient than Lenoir (Dining Hall),” said Testa, a member of the softball team. “It’s better for us because it’s open later, and we can go after practice.” It is the policy of The Daily Tar Heel to report any inaccurate informa tion published in our newspaper as soon as the error is discovered. News Rams Head Dining Hall offers students a variety of distinctive dining spaces. Students can indulge in any of five themed stations —a chop house, diner, salad bar, bakery and deli. “I’ve never really eaten in a din ing hall before I came here.” said Susan Cadrecha, a freshman from Atlanta. “I like the setting and the break fast especially. It’s perfect for Sunday brunch.” In addition to the dining hall, Rams Head Center offers a park ing deck and recreation center. The entire facility, which includes a scenic grass quad on top of the parking deck, was constructed with an SBO million price tag. Rams Head will be recognized in May with the other national winners at the Food Management Ideas Conference in Chicago.
