Pillai, who plans to expand

will serve her well as editor.
“I’m not confrontational, but
I’m not one of those people who
lets things fester,” she said.
Ann Morris, managing edi

Greensboro, praised Pillai’s work
style during her summer intern
ship last year.
“I was impressed by how mature
and thoughtful she was,” she said.
“She did an excellent job writing a
really wide variety of stories.”

Schwartz noted that his expe
rience as managing editor has
helped him learn about all the dif
ferent elements that make a news
paper.
“I have a good appreciation of
what every desk has to do,” he said.
“I learned about this whole other
world of what makes a good photo,
a good design.”
David Brown, senior associ
ate editor of the Carolina Alumni
Review, said Schwartz impressed
him when he interned at the review
two summers ago.
“He’s got the reporter’s curios

needs to be looked into.”
“I wish he could have stayed
with us longer,” he added.

Committee OK’d
for annexed areas
BY TED STRONG
SENIOR WRITER
There were storm clouds stir
ring Tuesday night as the Carrboro
Board of Aldermen approved the
new horizons committee.
The group is designed to deal,
with concerns of the area north of
town that was annexed against the
will of many residents in January.
Initially, the item spearhead
ed by Aldermen Dan Coleman and
Randee Haven-
O’Donnell
was passed
almost perfunc
torily.
“I don’t know

from Tuesday's
board meeting
if we need any discussion,” Coleman
said.
The only board comment came
from Alderman Joal Hall Broun,
who wanted to be sure that min
utes would be kept.
But one member of the public,
former alderman candidate Katrina
Ryan, had signed up to speak.
She had a variety of concerns.
“In an effort to sort of facilitate
communication maybe a less cre
ative but more informative name is
in order,” she said.
She explained that if residents
tried to search for information
about the committee, they might
not be able to logically make the
connection between the name and
the committee’s purpose.

Ryan also asked for clarifica
tion as to whether the committee
is official or public; suggested that
the board reconsider the number
of representatives the board will
appoint from each neighborhood;
said the board should think about
letting the residents select repre
sentatives; and expressed concern
that the committee would become
a way of screening comment away
from the board.
After Ryan’s comments, a variety
of board members responded.
Alderman Jacquelyn Gist said
that the committee has the support
of all the aldermen, that no open
meetings laws would be broken
and that the process is starting in
good faith.
“To imply otherwise undermines
the purpose of the board before it
even gets started,” she said.
Alderman Alex Zaffron suggest
ed that the committee’s function be
listed under its name on the town
Web site and Haven-O’Donnell
said that she would resend an e
mail to Ryan that answered some
more specific questions.
Mayor Mark Chilton said all are
eligible to apply to the commit
tee. “My intention is that... we’re
going to appoint the people who
have applied.”
