Zty Sailg (Bar Hrri Tar Heels to meet Miami BY BRANDON STATON ASSISTANT SPORTS EDITOR A lot has changed since 2004. But North Carolina head coach Mike Fox hopes at least one thing stays the same for the Tar Heels as they travel south for a pivotal ACC match-up against Miami this weekend. “We’ll rely on the fact that two years ago, we went down there with (Andrew) Miller and (Daniel) Bard as freshmen, and we won two out of three —and we had them beat the third game,” he said. “We threw away a rundown, or we would’ve swept them down there, so we’ll use that as a recall not last year.” The one-two punch baffled the mighty Miami hitters in 2004, allowing just one run in 16 innings. The two totaled 16 strikeouts and held the Hurricanes (23-10,8-4 in -the ACC) to 11 hits. In the 2005 campaign howev er, the duo’s mound mastery was nowhere to be found. In just four combined innings, the starters allowed 15 runs thanks in large part to 11 walks. Miller and Bard said they are focused on the series at hand and aren’t too worried about their track records against the Hurricanes. Bard said that he hoped to learn from his mistakes of last season. “You can’t think about it too SPORTS CALENDAR TODAY Track Austin Relays Time: all day Location: Austin, Texas Men's golf The Intercollegiate Time: all day Location: Cary Men’s tennis vs. Maryland Time: 3 p.m. Location: College Park, Md. ffICCTB Join the NC Health Careers Access Program for our 2006 Health Professions Forum Saturday, April 8 • 8:30 a.m. • 1:30 p.m. Auditorium in the Tate-Tumer-Kurait School of Social Work Building Students'Tell All: The truth about Health Sciences School Tours graduate and professional school and Informational Sessions A panel of current graduate students Participants will meet with current will talk candidly about the every- graduate students, receive informa day struggles and joys of graduate ton about the various UNC health and professional school as well as science programs, and take a guided offer tips on preparing for and sur- tour of the graduate/professional viving the admissions process. health science schools. Miami’s a whole differ ent team, and I feel like I’m a lot different pitcher.” He admitted that in recent out ings on the mound he has had trouble with his command. “I’ve been working hard on it in my bullpen sessions and stuff, so I’m feeling pretty good.” In college baseball’s aluminum bat era, pitching will forever be in question. The team’s offensive youth and inexperience could give the Tar Heels (25-6, 7-5) a chance to jump Miami for the top spot in the coastal division of the ACC. “Hopefully (we can) repeat what we did down there freshmen year,” Miller said. “We took two from them, should’ve taken three. We pitched well, hit well so hope fully we won’t play like we did last year against them. “I think we should have the upper hand.” Contact the Sports Editor at sports@unc.edu. m/ 7W ■ -#m/ 967-8665 TCI I Tbit. Sports UNC looks to keep streaks alive BY AMELIA DRUCKENBROD STAFF WRITER The North Carolina softball team is looking to extend several streaks this weekend as the No. 22 Tar Heels take on Boston College in Massachusetts. UNC (35-10,7-2 in the ACC) is on an 8-game winning streak its longest of the season. In addition, senior pitcher Crystal Cox has won 11 straight and sophomore Casey Testa is on a 10-game hit ting streak. The consistent play of its pitcher and designated hitter have helped give North Carolina confidence about the upcoming series against the Eagles, Testa SEiid. “Our team has been doing very well recently with hitting and pitch ing and defense especially,” said Testa, who leads the team with a .309 batting average. “So I feel very strong going into this weekend.” The Tar Heels will play a three game series at Boston College (14- 15,1-8) their fourth ACC match up of the season. State, which are ranked second, third and fourth in the conference, respectively. Even though this will be the Tar Heels third ACC series away from Chapel Hill, Testa said competing on the roEid doesn’t make a differ ence in how the team plays. “Honestly, I don’t let it affect me either way because we’re still going out there and playing the same game that we always play whether it’s at home or away,” she said the team is 13-2 on the road and 11-3 at home. “Of course for me it’s always nice at home because you get to sleep in your own bed.” The Tar Heels are ranked first in the ACC and the Eagles last but that doesn’t necessarily mean the game will be an easy victory for UNC. “I don’t think that any game is going to be easy, and we can’t let that ranking mean anything for us,” Testa said. “We’re still going to go out there ft EE GAL.
