3H|? oa% ©ar lied End your football famine with can’t-miss matchups Don’t worry sports fans. You do not have to watch Major League Baseball anymore in order to get your sports fix. The 2006 college football season kicks off at 10 p.m. today when Northern Arizona battles No. 24 Arizona State in Tfempe, Ariz. Granted, the matchup between the Lumberjacks and Sun Devils does not appear to have the mak ings of a future ESPN Classic; here is a list of the 10 games you cannot miss this season. 10. Michigan at Ohio State Michigan might be able to spoil Ohio State’s national champion ship bid in the 103rd game of col lege football’s top rivalry. Although Michigan does not appear to have the talent of Ohio State, this series has produced memorable upsets. Do not think that running back Mike Hart and quarterback Chad Henne are not up to the challenge. 9 • Ohio State at lowa When the Buckeyes travel to lowa City the Big 10 title and automatic BCS bid will be on the line. Last year OSU thrashed the Hawkeyes in Columbus so revenge will be on all the lowa players’ minds. Expect a lot of offense as both teams have stellar play at the skill positions, including quarter backs Troy Smith and Drew Tate. 8. Florida State at Miami The winner of this matchup between the top two ACC teams should be on track to gain the con ference’s BCS birth. Don’t expect to see these two teams lighting up the scoreboard, as both Miami and FSU feature stout defenses. 7. Georgia vs. Florida This year’s version of the World’s Largest Cocktail Party should decide who represents the East in the SEC title game. Even though the Bulldogs lost star quarterback D. J. Shockley to graduation, they are still capable of upsetting quar- ©V oailg ©or Mppl Help Wanted I Happiness, Food & Spirits Applications being accepted for all positions. ■ | ;!■ Apply at 115 Elliott Road, Chapel Hill, NC ii iji P[El\se ALLOW Time Fo^Fir^T i jij please ask ABOUT ©oil meal &ToiTio| plans! j; Help Wanted PERSONAL ASSISTANT REAL ESTATE Assistant needed for local builder and real estate mar keting family. California at Southern California It has been nearly two years since the Golden Bears nearly upset USC in Los Angeles, and do not be surprised if this time the Trojans fail to deliver. Cal boasts possibly the best backfield in the nation in Marshawn Lynch and Justin Forsett And no one knows how USC will react to the loss of its NFL caliber offensive weapons. 5. Louisiana State at Auburn Auburn’s undefeated season in 2004 was jump-started when they snuck past LSU —then the defending national champions. The same thing could happen to whoever wins this year. 4. Texas vs. Oklahoma The loss of quarterback Rhett Bomar aside, Oklahoma still has head coach Bob Stoops and, more importantly, stud run ning back Adrian Peterson. That alone should be enough to give the Longhorns all that they can handle in the 101st edition of the SBC Red River Rivalry. 3. Notre Dame at USC A national championship birth might be on the line for both the Fighting Irish and TVojans. In head coach Charlie Weis’ first season at Notre Dame, the Fighting Irish almost knocked out Southern Cal. This year Notre Dame will be the experienced favorite, but the young TVojans will be dangerous. 2. News Heels again victim of injury BY BRANDON STATON SPORTS EDITOR T-minus two days and count ing until the UNC-Chapel Hill football team kicks off its 2006 season, and coach John Bunting has finally answered some of the questions that have hovered over vacant starting roles in the Tar Heels’ roster. After naming Joe Dailey the starting quarterback in a TViesday press conference, Bunting con firmed to the media after prac tice Wednesday that, while junior linebacker Durell Mapp did prac tice, he will not be in the starting lineup when UNC faces off against Rutgers Saturday. “There’s a possibility that he could play some,” Bunting said. “He’s certainly not going to start. I would never trust that to a player that hasn’t played very much, but he might be able to play a little.” Bunting said that sophomore Chase Rice will fill in for Mapp. If the Tar Heels are unnerved at all about the upcoming season in light of injuries and inexperience, they haven’t let it show. The players and coaches have remained upbeat in the face of some tough challenges, not the least of which was the quarterback situation. And even upon hearing the news that he wouldn’t be the starter under center, redshirt freshman Cam Sexton has been a consum mate team player, Bunting said.
