FROM STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS A Pima, Ariz., couple resigned as the leaders of a church that considers marijuana a sacrament Dan and Mary Quaintance said pending fed eral charges against them have made it impos sible to lead the church. The two were arrested in February in a car containing 172 pounds of marijuana. Officials said they believe the church is a front for drug trafficking. “If there isn’t a favorable ruling on our religious freedom, then I don’t believe there is a justice system in America,” Dan Quaintance said. NOTED. A 59-year-old man said he plans to invest in a cell phone after being trapped in his car for four days. Raymond Vachon, who lost control of his car early Tuesday, ate the Wheat Thin crackers in his car and drank the dew off leaves and his windshield. He was rescued Saturday morning after a man heard his cries. POLICE LOG ■ A car was reported stolen at 9:36 p.m. Sunday, according to Chapel Hill police reports. Reports state a 1994 red Hyundai Excel, valued at $5,000, was stolen from a parking lot at 120 S. Estes Drive. ■ Three incidents of break ing and entering were reported Sunday, according to Chapel Hill police reports. Reports state that someone broke the door jam interior to enter the residence at 231N. Graham St., causing SSO in damage. Reports state someone also kicked in the back door of the house at 102 Chesapeake Way, entered the house and left with cash. According to reports someone also broke into the 3 Cups coffee shop at 431 W. Franklin St. and stole sls in cash and S2OO worth of scales. ■ Several larcenies were reported Sunday, according to Chapel Hill police reports. At 7:17 a.m. someone reported that two unsecured Schwinn bicy cles, valued at $250 and S3OO, ®a% (Ear QUOTED. “I love to eat, and I love to compete, so the two go pretty well together.” Richard LeFevre, a 62- year-old retired accountant from Nevada, on how he swal lowed 247 peppers in eight min utes to win the Jalapeno Eating World Championship at the State Fair of Texas. LeFevre’s feat earned him $2,000. were stolen from the front porch of 309 Kirkwood Drive, reports state. A report made at 8:28 a.m. states that someone took an antique fence, valued at $l5O, and attempted to take a mile marker from a yard on Van Dorin Place. And reports also state that some one threw a rock and broke out the back window of a Toyota Camry on Baslight Lane Alley, causing SIOO in damage. According to reports, the sto len items include an iPod worth S2OO, a factory radio worth $l5O, a Sirius radio worth $l5O and $2 in spare change. ■ A man was arrested at 8:03 a.m. Sunday at 137 E. Franklin St. on charges of possessing drug par aphernalia and failing to comply with police, according to Chapel Hill police reports. Donald Brothers, 50, of 100 W. Rosemary St., was secured at Orange County Jail in lieu of S2OO bail, reports state. He is scheduled to appear Oct. 23 in District Criminal Court, reports state.
