4 THURSDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2006 Greek council holds forum Explains organizations’ campus role BY HANNAH EDWARDS STAFF WRITER The Greek community often faces living within the stereotypes that others put on it. So some Greek community mem bers came together Wednesday night to dispel that generalization with a panel to educate the University community about the differences within each organization. The forum opened with each of the seven active predominantly black Greek organizations on campus giv ing their histories both nationwide and within the University listing prominent members and detailing service projects. After the brief introductions, members of the UNC National Pan Hellenic Council’s discussed com mon etiquette issues. Brandon Cates, NPHC social chairman, came out dressed as his fictitious twin sister, Brenda, much to the amusement of those in attendance. He and Treasurer Ashley Williams demonstrated the importance of the history of each organization’s motto. Williams said respecting the mottos, such as the colors of each organization, is a sign of respect. Members also touched on the role of terms specific to each group, The Inn is a preferred choice with Upf . a prime Chapel Hill location only one mile to UNC and Franklin Street, friendly and professional I l service and affordable rates. f S8 IMVERSTIYfISIN oi§£§Qj® The Carolina Challenge is an annual business and social venture competition. NPHC President Qia Martin told those in attendance about how the organizations in NPHC differ from other fraternities and sororities on campus. They don’t have houses or a formal rush process. A question-and-answer session was held after the panel, where one member of each organization responded to anonymous questions submitted by the audience. A major audience concern was the policy of discretion. Panel members warned against approaching fraternity or soror ity members and publicly showing interest in membership. “Show up at the group’s events and forums,” Kappa Alpha Psi President Eric Butcher said. “Show interest.” Ashley Wiley, representing Delta Sigma Theta, said the unity within sororities nationwide is signifi cant. “When I go home, I haye other chapters ... that show love,” she said. “You have brothers and sisters everywhere.” Butcher said new members are chosen based on academics and personality. Freshman Vanetta Schoefield said the panel was informative. “I have noticed the Greek life on campus, and I wanted more infor mation,” she said. Martin said the diversity at the meeting was encouraging for the future of fraternities and sororities. “It was good to see a lot of people come out and learn about us.” Contact the University Editor at udesk@unc.edu. FLU PREVENTION FROM PAGE 3 Carolinas. While the overall demeanor of the event was easygoing and off-inter rupted by laughter, speakers stressed the importance of flu vaccines and also of a healthy and active lifestyle. Mixing humor into her message, Devlin joked that in next year’s speech she would make the analogy that “a touch of the flu” is like saying someone is “a little bit pregnant.” Contact the City Editor at citydesk@unc.edu. fast /WssMl DELIVERY rfti&Hn 968-3278 V \TV | OPEN LATE I^l hours ■A Mon-Wed: 4pm-2am 306A W.
