A press release, issued shortly after 4 p.m., stated that there will be a news conference introducing Davis on Monday after the final game of the season for the 1-9 Thr Heels. Administrators will not comment on Davis until that date. Davis, the former Butch Davis was UNO's first choice to succeed John Bunting. After negotiating with Information Technology Services and student government leaders since January, Ruckus Network Inc., a multimedia provider for universities and colleges, is part nering with UNC to provide stu dents with unlimited content. “It is our intention that this will be the music program that we have in place as long as it is working for students,” said Robyn East, associate vice chancellor and deputy chief information officer for ITS. After evaluating a pilot pro gram that was instituted for the spring 2005 semester, campus leaders decided to take a second look at Cdigix, RealNetworks’ Rhapsody, Napster and Ruckus. He will replace John Bunting, who in his sixth season is 25-45 as head coach. “Butch Davis became our first choice early in the process, although we did not know of his interest in us,” Baddour, the ninth-year director of athletics, said in the release. “We were excited to learn of his interest in Carolina and our football program and pro ceeded from that point.” Negotiations were ongoing, and Nelson Schwab, chairman of the Board of Trustees, said that by Friday the deal was done. “It wasn’t until the end of last week that really there was a feeling, that we had a meeting of the minds,” Schwab said. “And then we were talking about press conferences rather than terms.” Davis cannot fulfill any coaching duties until after the Nov. 25 game against Duke. But reports from Internet, broadcast and print sources confirming that Davis had signed a contract swirled at the end of last week, caus ing the administration to decide to release the news officially. Among the stipulations were a provider that didn’t bring desktop viruses with it, offered a range of musical tastes and would be avail able to all students on campus, off campus and at the graduate level. SEE RUCKUS, PAGE 6 This year’s 126 Chapel Hill and Carrboro participating restaurants will contribute 10 percent of the day’s sales to local beneficiaries, including the Community Kitchen of Urban Ministries of Durham, the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina and the Inter-Faith Council for Social Service in Chapel Hill. Since the program began in 1989, RSWP has helped raise more than $425,000 for the chari ties involved, according to the pro gram’s Web site. RSWP got its start in Baltimore, Md., when servers decided to com bine their tips to donate to a local charitable organization. From there he coached at several high schools before getting his first college job as an assistant at Oklahoma State under Jimmy Johnson in 1979. He followed Johnson to Miami, where he was defensive line coach from 1984-88. When Johnson jumped to the NFL to coach the Dallas Cowboys, Davis followed as a defensive assis tant, won two Super Bowl rings and served as defensive coordinator in 1993 and 1994.
