Focusing on issues of wanting
more from everyday life, the story
revolves around 17-year-old Mary
Brigit, who decides to write her
own memoir —but not before she
makes her life a little more inter
esting through several unexpected
changes.
“The play came naturally to
me because I’m an actor,” Walter
said.
“At the time I was writing it, I
was in a modern drama class, and
I was in a show.”
Walter’s experience in theater
allowed her to write in a way that
is accessible to actors, she said.

Walter, a creative writing
minor, said she was inspired to
write the play after she created
its protagonist in a monologue
for a class.
“The monologue turned out to
have this crazy, nervous person
and was narrated by someone who
is writing something.”
Director Christine Mottram said
being able to consult Walter about
the script during rehearsals was
beneficial to the production pro
cess.

Madeline
Walter wrote
the play after
creating the
main character
in a class.
“It was my first directing project,
so it was great to get other opin

“I could always ask Madeline
for clarification or find a way to
write around problems that came
up.”
Although the cast of “Memoir”
did not begin rehearsing until the
semester began, Walter said the
show came together perfectly in a
short amount of time.
“I have the exact cast I want to
do this play with,” she said. “I feel
like I could step away from the
process completely and it’d go all
by itself.”
Many of the 12 cast members
undertake multiple roles and switch
between their characters in the
same scene, something that attract
ed sophomore Allison Altman to the
lead role.
“It’s such an innovative play,”

“There’s a lot of humanity in
the play,” Mottram said. “Mary
Brigit is only 17. We aren’t that far
removed.
“Her insecurities are more vis
