From a concoction of ideas involving a faked pregnancy, a family of zany characters and a protagonist who thinks her life is utter ly boring, “I am Writing a Memoir” was born. The play ONLINE Company Carolina puts its twist on "Godspell" at the Arts Center. opens tonight at the Elizabeth Price Kenan Theatre and runs until Tuesday. Focusing on issues of wanting more from everyday life, the story revolves around 17-year-old Mary Brigit, who decides to write her own memoir —but not before she makes her life a little more inter esting through several unexpected changes. “The play came naturally to me because I’m an actor,” Walter said. “At the time I was writing it, I was in a modern drama class, and I was in a show.” Walter’s experience in theater allowed her to write in a way that is accessible to actors, she said. “After you’re around some thing for a while, it gets in your The Real College Experience ATTEND THE PLAY Time: Various times today through Thursday Location: Elizabeth Price Kenan Theatre in the Center for Dramatic Art Info: www.drama.unc.edu/calendar bones.” Walter, a creative writing minor, said she was inspired to write the play after she created its protagonist in a monologue for a class. “The monologue turned out to have this crazy, nervous person and was narrated by someone who is writing something.” Director Christine Mottram said being able to consult Walter about the script during rehearsals was beneficial to the production pro cess. Swimming pool, fitness center, game room, 24-hour study lounge, audiovisual room, wireless zones & on-site dining all at an... ■ UNBEATABLE PRICE! da News Senior Madeline Walter wrote the play after creating the main character in a class. “It was my first directing project, so it was great to get other opin ions,” Mottram said. “I could always ask Madeline for clarification or find a way to write around problems that came up.” Although the cast of “Memoir” did not begin rehearsing until the semester began, Walter said the show came together perfectly in a short amount of time. “I have the exact cast I want to do this play with,” she said. “I feel like I could step away from the process completely and it’d go all by itself.” Many of the 12 cast members undertake multiple roles and switch between their characters in the same scene, something that attract ed sophomore Allison Altman to the lead role. “It’s such an innovative play,” Who has the best selection of salads? jOlr ?
